Akshay Kumar turns comic hero
Akshay Kumar is all set to motivate, inspire and lead children to a cleaner and greener world! He has partnered with The Energy and Research Institute (TERI) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to conceptualise and co-write an action comic book titled 'Soldiers of the Earth' that will educate children about the environment while entertaining them. The comic will be launched tomorrow.
Soldiers of the Earth is an all-encompassing environmental education program which includes innovative components like books, workshops and educational learning material to educate, train and encourage children from all walks of life to learn more about the world they live in and encourage them to act towards saving their planet.
Akshay Kumar is already associated with TERI and IIFA as he is an ambassador for the Green Globe Foundation. It was the his idea to use the comic book medium to sensitise children towards the environment because he felt it would have a maximum connect and impact on the children who read it. The 'Champion of the Causes' says, "I have been working with TERI and IIFA to highlight the climate crisis. To take this effort forward, we decided to launch the comic book as a tool to reach out to kids. Children are our future, it is very important to teach them about nature, which is irreplaceable," adding on a lighter note, "While doing this comic book, in a way, I revisited my Chacha Chaudhary and Saboo days."
TERI feels that only when children understand the environment and the factors affecting it, will they take the initiative to protect it. And it seems the khiladi's popularity amongst children made him a natural choice for them campaign.
Nobel laureate and TERI's General Director Dr. RK Pachauri, who is leading this campaign, says, "The most sensitive minds in the world must be at the vanguard of an inspired movement to reverse the damage we have wreaked on the environment. India is a country with a growing population of youth who as 'Soldiers of the Earth', using knowledge provided by TERI in easily assailable form, would lead such a movement. They would be inspired by the active involvement of an iconic star like Mr. Akshay Kumar."
Inculcating awareness about purification of water in school, awareness drive about drinking filtered water, provision of information about availability of potable water, promoting wastewater recycling, plantation drives, 'Refuse Reduce Reuse Recycle' campaigns, "Say 'No' to Plastic" drives, 'Save electricity' campaign, encouraging usage of public transport or carpools, intra-school elocution competition on advantages of renewable energy, encouraging school authorities to install solar cookers in school canteen, setting up and managing rainwater harvesting systems and spreading knowledge about the environment are the important activities that this campaign will execute. The campaign will start in Mumbai and other metros like Delhi, Kolkatta, Chennai and Bangalore will follow suit. It will also be implemented in the interior areas of the country to spread mass awareness about the environment and eventually culminate in a pan-India movement for the environment.
