Missing Shah Rukh this Diwali

For the first time in years, Shah Rukh Khan will not be in theatres this Diwali. Over the last 13 years, SRK's biggest movies have released during this time of the year, and hugely entertained us.

"Shah Rukh gets the audience to cinema theatres like a magnet attracts iron," says Komal Nahta, noted trade analyst. "Many of his producers have released his films in Diwali because this is the best week of the year and everyone hopes to get a houseful show. And he has proved his success ratio many times."

But this Diwali, there will be no SRK-starrer. Instead, there is Priyanka Chopra-Kangana Ranaut-starrer Fashion, and Ajay Devgan-Kareena Kapoor-starrer Golmaal Returns.

We take a look back at the earlier Diwali years, when Shah Rukh Khan had a blast at the box office.

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, 1995

Ironically, Shah Rukh did not want to be a part of DDLJ, the film that changed his life forever.

"You know, Shah Rukh did not want to do DDLJ in the beginning," says Anupama Chopra, author of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge: The Making of a Blockbuster. "He thought it was the typical loverboy kind of role. Adi [Aditya Chopra] had to really persuade him to do it. DDLJ established him. Though Shah Rukh and Kajol had done Karan Arjun before, DDLJ established this famous jodi. There is a poster in Adi's office in which Shah Rukh has signed, 'Thank you for making me the star that I am today'. I have ended my book with this."

The film became such a big hit that it still runs in a Mumbai theatre today, more than 600 weeks after its release. The film has beaten all previous records held by blockbusters like Sholay and Hum Aapke Hai Koun...!.

Dil Toh Pagal Hai, 1997

Yet another Yash Raj film, DTPH released in the Diwali of 1997. Directed by Yash Chopra, the film starred Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor.

When the film released, critics panned it. But the film went to become a big hit, the film's music playing a major part.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, 1998

The start of Karan Johar's directorial career and friendship with SRK, KKHH made 1998's Diwali especially memorable.

Now, 10 years later, Karan is working on an animated film, Kuchie Kuchie Hota Hai, which reportedly has a similar story.

Mohabbatein, 2000

Aditya Chopra's second directorial venture saw SRK share the screen with Amitabh Bachchan. The latter was going through a low phase, and the film helped life his career once again.

Mohabbatein did not become as big a hit as DDLJ. But Shah Rukh proved that he was indeed lucky for the Diwali box office. The other Diwali release, Mission Kashmir, did not match its success.

Veer Zaara, 2004

The year 2004 saw quite a few releases -- Yash Chopra's Veer Zaara, Abbas-Mustan's Aitraaz, Ram Gopal Varma's Naach and the colour version of Mughal-E-Azam. All the films, except Naach, made money at the box office but Veer Zaara was the biggest hit.

Don, 2006

Farhan Akhtar's Don had to compete with Shirish Kunder's Jaan-e-man, and both films were heavily publicised. Ultimately, the crowds seemed to prefer SRK over Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Even though Don was remade from Amitabh's old classic, audiences seemed to like Farhan's take on it. Even though Jaan-e-man got good reviews, it had to take a backseat to Don.

Om Shanti Om, 2007

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya and Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om faced each other during the Diwali of 2007. In an uncommon event, there was a war of words between the directors before the films' release.

Many wondered whether SRK's box office magic would continue, as he was getting older, and seemed to bet on the younger Ranbir Kapoor.

But SRK proved that age was just a number, and made OSO a blockbuster.

We'll miss you this Diwali, Shah Rukh!
