Profile: Shilpa Shetty
By Monica Chadha
BBC News, Mumbai

Shilpa has not been having a good time of it in the Big Brother house
Shilpa Shetty is one of Bollywood's glamorous actresses who enjoys quite a fan base amongst Indian film viewers.
The 31-year-old does not have the kind of audience pull a top actress such as Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee or Preity Zinta possesses. But she certainly adds value to a high-profile star cast.

Shetty was first noticed in 1993 when she starred in a supporting actress role opposite actor Shah Rukh Khan in the hit film Baazigar (Player).

She then went on to play lead roles in hits such as Main Khiladi Tu Anari (Me Player, You Buffoon) and Dhadkan (Heartbeat).

Later, she got tremendous recognition for her portrayal of an HIV sufferer in the 2004 film Phir Milenge (Will Meet Again).

Inspired by Hollywood hit Philadelphia, it also won her nominations in several Indian film awards, such as the International Indian Film Academy Awards.

Her last hit was 2005's Dus (Ten), in which she starred with other top-notch actors such as Sanjay Dutt and Abhishek Bachchan.

She has judged various television competitions and has also starred in the BBC World Service Trust's campaign against Aids.

Last year, she received hundreds of marriage proposals on the e-mail address she made public to interact with her fans.

Shilpa has been making films since she was a teenager
"I really don't know when I will get married and to be honest, I haven't found the perfect man yet, " she told the BBC at the time.

She was romantically linked to actor Akshay Kumar in the past, but since then she has reportedly been single.

In 2000, Shetty successfully sued Stardust India magazine after it ran a piece about her relationship with Kumar. She took legal action as she thought it was damaging.

When it was revealed she would be taking part in Celebrity Big Brother, there was tremendous curiosity in India.

Not just because of the format of the programme and its reputation, but also for the huge amount of money she was paid for her appearance. In India, it is rumoured the actress will pocket $680,456 (345,145).

Shetty stays in Mumbai with her parents and younger sister, Shamita, who is also a Bollywood actress.

Her mother, Sunanda Shetty, claims her daughter's trip to the UK to appear in Big Brother is the first time she has ever travelled anywhere without her.

Tony Blair watches Shilpa's SKPGY

By: Joginder Tuteja, Glamsham
Thursday, February 22, 2007

Shilpa Shetty is living her moments of glory and is making sure that she becomes one of the most popular faces out there in UK.

She informs that in her meeting with Tony Blair, Prime Minister of UK, she was in for a pleasant surprise as he told her that he had watched her Salman Khan starrer Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar which was released last year.

Even though this more-than-5-years-in-the-making film met with a disastrous fate at the box office, SKPGY was one of the first Hindi films to be screened at cable network in UK and caught Blair's eyes as he was surfing the channels.

Guess there is someone out there who after all caught the film! The film boasted of a decent performance by Shetty but was at least 30 years too late in concept and theme!

Smitten by Shilpa Shetty

Even the Prince didn't escape her charm! Celebrity Big Brother winner Shipa has been invited as a guest of honor at the Princess Diana memorial concert this summer. And to top all that she has been offered a lead role in the West End Musical 'Chicago'.

"Shilpa Shetty was invited to see the musical on Tuesday and she has enjoyed it, and its producers have offered her one of the main roles in the musical but she is yet to decide," the spokesperson Farhat Hussain said. Talks are on and SHilpa will soon decide whether to give an affirmation on it. The producers of the movie are not concerned if she can sing or not. But Shilpa can surely answer the singing part soon as she is taking singing lessons with lead singer-song-writer Jamie Peace, a finalist in the prestigious International Songwriting Competition in the United States for his track More Than Enough. And our lady beautiful is also presumed to be the first face ever on first new Indian version of the fashion magazine Vogue. UK is truly Smitten by Shipla Shetty!

I didn't mess up Mr Mahesh Bhatt: Shilpa Shetty

By Subhash K Jha

Even as Shilpa expressed her delight at the enthusiasm generated in Great Britain by her next release Metro, news comes that she's the reason behind the film's delay.

Director Anurag Basu gives Shilpa a clean chit. "Shilpa had asked me before leaving for Big Brother, We tried to complete her work before her departure. But her dates couldn't be co-ordinated with the rest of the artistes.

Shilpa thought she'd be evicted from Big Brother by 20 January. She never dreamt she'd stay on till the end. She has nine days work left which we'll complete as soon as she returns."

Anurag is in fact over-joyed by the overseas buzz for Metro, "I don't have an overseas audience. It's because of Shilpa that they're now making inquiries about Metro from festivals across the world. The film has benefited greatly from her presence. We are all very proud of her. My co-producers UTV were taken into confidence about pushing Metro's release in April."

Regarding the delay of Mahesh Bhatt's son's launch film Suicide Bomber which Mr Bhatt has apparently been grumbling about, Anurag says, "The delay in Metro has caused a chain reaction. Suicide Bomber IS delayed. I can't shoot two films together.

But what difference do a couple of months make when there's such a larger issue? Shilpa has done all of us proud. Why create bad blood? I've told Shilpa I'm lucky for her. I'll now be polishing up the script for Suicide Bomber." Shilpa Clarifies: Shilpa Shetty had her first day off in London on Wedenesday. She could barely kep her eyes open. "It's been a time of tremendous euphoria and exhilaration. I can't believe all this is happening to me! I'm so proud to be representing India. But why am I being attacked back home? "

Explains Shilpa, "I've nine days work left. But that's not the reason why the film's release has been pushed forward. UTV As soon as I come back I'll complete it. They were anyway planning to release a month later. And incidentally the producer Ronnie Screwvala is coming here to London to meet me, They're vey happy for me.

Why are people making me out to be this ruinous element who doesn't care about home just because she has found new fame abroad? Rubbish!"

Mahesh Bhatt is quoted as saying that Shilpa "messed up" with the schedules. "But he's not connected with Metro in any way! Anyway, I'm really forward to coming back home. First thing I want to do is complete my work in Metro, It's going to be my first release after Big Brother and I'm very excited.

It's going to have a massive marketing here in the UK. I always felt Anurag's film had the potential to work in the international market. If my presence helps the film to achieve the international level where it deserves to go then I'm really happy.

Bloody hell, I'm freaking out

By Subhash K Jha

Monday 12 March. Shilpa will be giving a speech in London for a prestigious global summit.

"Yes, I'll speak at the Commonwealth Day," she says nervously. "Bloody hell! Only four people will be giving a speech. And I'm one of them. It's freaking me out.

This year the theme is 'Respecting Differences & Promoting Understanding' It's about racism. And it's an issue that I'm now associated with. I better deliver. I'll be sharing the platform with world leaders and, ahem ahem, the Queen."

Shilpa has an expert help her write the speech. "It has to be five minutes of no beating around the bush. I feel extremely nervous but also very very honoured to be representing my country at such a prestigious event."

Back home, for a fortnight Shilpa has no time for her family. "I've a calendar launch on Saturday. Then I 've to attend the Filmfare awards on Sunday."

Shilpa's wardrobe designers are going ballistic trying to keep up with their superstar-clientele's social schedules. "Luckily I've two dear designer friends who keep me well dressed wherever I go after Big Brother, Neeta Lulla who had done my dress for my event at the House of Commons, and Tarun Tihliani who did my clothes for Big Brother.

Neeta and Tarun are being driven up the wall by my demands. I'm sure they dread my midnight calls from London, asking for a dress overnight. They must be so fed up of couriering me clothes to London."

Of course once in a while Shilpa is persuaded to wear international designers "For an occasion in London Vivien Westwood dressed me from head to toe. Oherwise it's Neeta and Tarun all the way for me."

Shilpa cracks up. "The funny thing is, I went to London with two bags and came back with seven. In just fifty days!!!

Thanks to Shilpa the image of the Bollywood heroine abroad has changed. "That's true," she concedes. "Earlier they were seen as voluptuous. Now they look at me and wonder at how thin I am and how clued in I am to global fashion trends. I can discuss Armani as well as Tarun and Neeta."

Now Police is waiting for Shilpa

Police may summon for questioning Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in connection with a three-year-old case in which her parents allegedly told a gangster to threaten a Surat-based businessman.

Police, however, say the actress would be called for questioning only after the gangster, Fazal ur Rehman, who allegedly made the threat calls to the businessman, is interrogated.

"As of now we have sought the custody of Fazal from the Delhi court as he is in police custody there. Once he is brought here and questioned we will decide if Shilpa is to be summoned," Surat's Deputy Commissioner of Police Subhash Trivedi said.

The extortion case resurfaced recently after Fazal claimed during his interrogation by Delhi Police that Shilpa had contacted him to seek help in threatening textile businessman Pankaj Agarwal, who owns the 'Parag' brand of sarees.

The matter made headlines in November 2003 when the Surat police arrested Shilpa's mother Sunanda and also registered a case against her father in connection with the case.

Shilpa's mother is presently on bail but the probe was on. Shilpa, who recently won a reality show in Britain, was supposed to do ad commercials for the saree brand but the deal did not work out and this caused some animosity between the Shettys and the businessman.

Fazlu, arrested from the Indo-Nepal border in August 2006, is allegedly involved in more than two dozen offences of kidnapping, extortion and attempt to murder.

I need a man to get married:Shilpa
By Subhash K Jha

One of Shilpa's happiest memories from Big Brother is her friendship with Jermaine Jackson.

"And guess what?" she squeals in delight. "Michael Jackson saw us on Big Brother. I told Jermaine to go home and just let me hear his voice."

Back home Shilpa is over-joyed to meet up with her sister. "Shamita was shooting in Hyderbad. I borrowed her from her co-star Madhavan. I hadn't spent any time with my sister in almost two months!"

Shilpa is very hurt by attempts to attack her family in Indian and British press. "Please don't run down my family. They accused us of not paying workers at our factory. My father has worked so hard to keep that factory going. The workers love him. I don't care what they write about me. But why target my family? My father is 67. Spare him.

My parents have gone through so much on my account. They were worried while I was doing Big Brother. I had the choice of getting out. And I was tempted to do so for my family's sake. But I didn't want to be a loser. Honestly it wasn't easy in there.

And when people out here see the full footage it'll anger them. What kept me going was the belief that I'd be out of there in three weeks. But there were fun moments "

As for Shamita's unbecoming picture appearing in a tabloid, Shilpa sighs, "Everyone makes mistakes. Publishing her picture was a very mean thing to do. The difference between us and the West is that we've some ingrained values and we draw a line of decency in public. No point in aping the West. We should never lose our intrinsic values."

Comparisons with Rakhi Sawant who appeared on Big Boss were also hurtful. "Sorry, but with due respects, Big Brother is a hundred notches higher than Bigg Boss.

Honestly Big Brother this time was one of the most decent seasons. I was very clear that I was going to do nothing indecent. It's the non-celebrity Big Brother that's pretty obnoxious. There was no nudity or anything obnoxious in my show."

A couple of Bollywood actresses came forward to claim they had been offered Big Brother. "It was their choice if they didn't do it. I took up Big Brother because they paid me my money and stuck to the clauses in our contact. In a way I feel television is my true calling. Of course I'm known as a film actress. And I'm proud of that label."

"I never knew it would become so big. They were writing all kinds of things about me. If I wasn't Shilpa Shetty I'd actually believe what's written about. They're now trying to dig up supposedly unsavoury details about me.

Out there they're so used to celebrities who are abnormal and dysfunctional. They're incredulous that I'm so normal. I'm very happy wuth the way things are going. The media over there works very differently from the way it's over here. "

Shilpa has been getting feedback from places as far-flung as Barbados and Romania. "Yes it was the racism issue that has made it so big. People in India wouldn't understand the nerves that my situation at Big Brother touched among Asians abroad who've been through discrimination."

According to the Western press not since Gandhiji has the third-world risen in one voice to protest against racial discrimination as they did for Shilpa. "Asians from India and Pakistan and Bangladesh rose up to protest against my discrimination. That's been my biggest achievement.

People at home have been very welcoming. All I'm requesting is, please don't write irresponsibly about me. If I don't get respect at home how can I get it abroad? Don't write well about me. But please don't run down my parents."

Marital dreams? "I want to settle down. But I need a man first. I'm sure God has great plans in that department too. Just look at what He planned for me this year!"

Shilpa Shetty on Big Brother- traumatized

The Indian damsel, Shilpa Shetty is in distress at Big Brother's house. Shilpa Shetty has allegedly been paid 360,000 to appear on the show which is the original of the Indian television reality show Big Boss. She was brought in to please the Asian community in UK and is reportedly allowed to flirt with any of the inmates during the show. The lady was an instant attraction of the show with her killing looks which includes her 5'10" height. But now the damsel is in distress because of the racist attitude of some of the inmates. One of them, Jack Tweede, called the Bollywood actress "a Paki". Another housemate Jade Goody said Shetty "made her skin crawl." Goody's mother, who was also on the show, refused to call Shetty anything but "the Indian." The mother has now been evicted. But people from the NRI and UK community have not been keeping quiet seeing all this. UK media watchdog, Ofcom, received complaints from 200 on Monday to 2000 by Tuesday that Shetty was the target of racist attacks. Shetty's tormentors are called the terrible trio of Jade, Jo and Danielle and want them evicted. The producers of Channel 4 say they take racism seriously and are monitoring all the housemates before taking appropriate measures. Outside the studios, Shetty appears to be enjoying tremendous popularity because of her Asian fans and her blooming romance with Dirk (like Anupama and Aryan romance story on Big Boss, the shows Indian Parallel). She is believed to be playing the game very well and is expected to win it.
