Bigg Boss goes for big toss

AFP
Thursday, November 23, 2006 09:40 IST
NEW DELHI: It has gossip, romance and drama, but India's prudish version of the worldwide hit reality show Big Brother has few takers on prime-time television long dominated by cat-fight soap operas.

The show went on air this month with 13 Bollywood film wannabes and has-been models, including a former Mr India, with the same format -- but much less skin and scandal -- as the international versions.

The series, Big Boss, will track participants over 100 days during which they are locked in a house and cut off from the outside world, with the television audience voting out one contestant each week.

The last one standing takes home Rs 500,000.

The first episode was watched by fewer than three percent of Hindi-language viewers among the nearly 62 million Indian households with cable television -- a paltry share compared to the 11.4 percent share notched by the top soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Because the Mother-in-Law Was Once a Daughter-in-Law).

According to TAM Media Research agency, the first episode of Bigg Boss ranked number 22 among prime time Hindi entertainment programmes -- mainly soaps revolving around two women scheming to woo the same man.

"These ratings are quite low, especially for a new show for which there normally is far more buzz," added Ashutosh Bhagat of media buying agency Mindshare India.

The show is seen as a bellwether for advertisers who want to reach the more than half of the 1.1 billion population who are under 25 and make up the booming market for electronic gadgets and cosmetics, said media consultant Praveen Tripathi, chief executive of Hansa Consulting.

Bigg Boss -- so named because producers thought the colloquial term of familiarity more catchy than the show's original Orwellian title -- is India's first major brush with reality television.

Until now the genre has been restricted to local versions of popular game shows like Who Wants to be a Millionaire or talent searches like American Idol.

The country got its first taste of the genre in the 1990s when the original American Temptation Island -- in which one member of a couple lives with a single person of the opposite sex to test their relationship -- was aired.

The series went largely unnoticed because of a limited audience for English-language programmes.

As in other versions of Big Brother, shown so far in some 70 countries, in the show's second week romance is already brewing, but contestants are unlikely to be shown taking showers or having sex.

"We will respect the stars' privacy in the bathroom. We are not going to show any explicit footage or go live with uncensored version," said Rajesh Kamat, managing director of Endemol India, the show's producer.

In India, homosexual acts are illegal, and sexual intimacy like kissing is never shown on television, rarely even in mainstream Bollywood films.

Bigg Boss producers, however, said the edited version of their show will not disappoint voyeuristic viewers. "

Already, some guys are getting adventurous with the women. Aryan Vaid has been quite touchy-feely of late," said Kamat, referring to the former Mr India who appears to be trying to woo starlet Anupama Verma.

Among others on the show are Bollywood siren Rakhi Sawant -- known for her raunchy dance numbers in B-grade films -- who is desperately trying to change her image by handwashing her housemates' clothes.

"Rakhi is not a weak person. I am becoming a good girl," she said, sometimes referring to herself in the third person. "Now anyone can marry Rakhi."

Sawant's only brush with fame so far came when she filed police charges against Punjabi pop star Mika who kissed her on the mouth in front of television cameras.

Makers of the series have emphasised sex indirectly as well and roped in cross-dressing homosexual Bobby Darling -- who confessed he needed the prize money for sex-change surgery -- and said the sight of him shaving in the women's room will make for "great content".

But Darling did not live up to his pseudonym with viewers, who gave him the dubious honour of becoming the first to be voted out of the Big Boss house.

Also on the show is model Carol Gracias who hit headlines this year when her bustier top fell and exposed her breasts while she was strutting the catwalk at a fashion show.

"They have just got a bunch of stupid people gossiping and bitching about each other. It is total nonsense. Why would anyone want to watch a show like that," said 24-year-old software professional Shivani Rai.

Media watchers said the series could not be written off yet.

"It's not the beginning that matters. Let's see whether the characters can manage to sustain interest," said media consultant Tripathi.

Experts said that despite a vast untapped potential for reality shows among young urban Indians, the genre was still largely untested.

"Reality shows are far tougher to tackle. For a show like this, there has to be more scandal to keep the interest alive," said Tripathi.

Endemol's Kamat said the company was now considering a non-celebrity version of Big Brother, the first of which aired in the Netherlands in 1999.

Rakhi's Bade Bhaiyya!

"I'm sure Rakhi will be voted out of Big Boss in two weeks! " says Rakesh Sawant, brother of Rakhi Sawant, whose film is stuck till she comes back to complete it.

Is trouble brewing in item girl Rakhi Sawant's family? A few weeks back Rakhi had thrown her own brother - Rakesh Sawant and his wife out of the house (albeit to buy them a new one later). On Big Boss, the reality show she is a part of, she expressed her desire to get married and settle down but blamed her "dominating" mother - who Rakhi accuses of using her as a money-making machine - for not letting her do so. Rakhi's mother vehemently denied the allegation and blamed it on her daughter's co-contestant, Kashmira Shah's, bad influence.

Meanwhile brother Rakesh's latest film starring Sony's first Indian Idol, Abhijeet Sawant is complete. When we caught up with him at a party he spoke about his forthcoming film, sister Rakhi's chances of success in Big Boss and other family matters.

What is your forthcoming film, April fool, about?
It is a comedy about a young boy and five girls. We have shot the entire film in Bangkok in one single schedule. Indian Idol winner Abhijeet Sawant is debuting in my film as a hero along with five new beautiful models.

What made you turn producer after having directed a single film?
My directorial debut Hot Money was made with a modest budget of Rs. 8 million, yet it went on to make a cool profit which made everyone concerned happy. This gave me tremendous confidence in my abilities as a film maker and I decided to take the plunge into production.

But wasn't Hot Money just another cheaply made skin flick which ran more for its skin content than anything else?
I delivered what the producers expected out of their film. Hot Money made cool money and that's what finally matters (smiles).

Your sister Rakhi was a part of Hot Money, is she also starring in April Fool?
Rakhi is doing an item number in April Fool. Though we have completed shooting the entire film, only her item number remains to be shot.

Rakhi is on Sony's Big Boss on television. You might have to wait almost a month before getting her dates.
The show's rule is that a participant cannot leave the show for at least 30 days or until he or she is voted out by the audience. I am not worried about waiting for 30 days more because I am pretty sure she is going to be voted out in two weeks and will be back to shoot for my film.

You sound sarcastic. Are you holding a grudge against her for evicting you out of her house?
I am her brother and I know her better than anyone else. She had thrown me out of the house after my marriage. Maybe she wanted me to stand on my feet and make a career for myself. She did buy a new house for me though. That is how she is.

    'Throw Kashmera out!'
    By: Tushar Joshi
    November 24, 2006

My husband greatest! Ravi Kissen with wife Preeti and their children
On Wednesday night, Rakhi Sawant made a venomous attack on Ravi Kissen. "Jo apni biwi ka nahin, woh kissi ka nahin (An unfaithful man can never be trusted)," she told Rupali Ganguli in a rather dramatic fashion, referring to rumours about Ganguli's affections for the Bhojpuri actor.

    Amused

Reacting to this development, Ravi's wife Preeti says she is more amused than miffed at the item girl's comment. Preeti Kissen not only watches every episode of the show but also logs on to the Internet to read what viewers have to say.

She says, "I don't know why they are making such lewd comments about Rupali. She treats him like a brother and the other housemates can't see that. I know my husband well and I know he loves me. I don't think anyone's comments can make difference to our relationship."

    Troublemaker

Singling out Kashmera as the real troublemaker, Preeti says, "Kashmera is responsible for all the mess in the house. I hope she gets evicted this week. In fact, I've been telling everyone I meet to vote her out. I'll be really happy to see her leave the house."

Stating that she doesn't have an issue with healthy gossiping, Preeti says, "Women will gossip, but the way Kashmera behaves is negative and very sickening. It's quite sad that she's spreading negativity all around her."
Worried about Ravi's health, she says, "In the last episode, I saw him sleeping a lot and he didn't look like he was in the best of health. I hope he's doing well. They have doctors to tend to the contestants if they fall sick, so I'm relieved about that."

    Introspection time

Revealing the real reason why she pushed Ravi to participate in the show, Preeti says, "I wanted him to do some introspection and spend some quality time with himself. He is a workaholic and never takes a break. Bigg Boss was a good excuse for him to break away from the routine."

Preeti is hopeful that Rupali won't let others' perceptions affect her friendship with Ravi. "She's a very soft girl and can be easily misled. I hope she doesn't fall into that trap and let others misguide her."

Talking about the high point of the show, Preeti says, "The most thrilling moment will be when there are only three or four contestants left in the house. That will be something to watch out for. I hope Ravi will be one of them. I know he wants to win."

The Aryan and Anupama saga seems to be taking new turns every day. Ragini's newfound closeness to Aryan doesn't go down too well with Anupama, who we think, cannot decide whether she wants his attention or not.
Anupama wonders if there is something brewing between the two of them, and voices her thoughts aloud to Kashmeera.
Then she tries talking to Aryan about it, but finds him busy chatting with Ragini, and goes back.
To lengthen this never-ending pantomime, Aryan wonders why she is avoiding him.
Will someone tell us the truth, please? All the twists, however, don't seem to deter Ravi, who seems to be enjoying playing Cupid to all the youngsters in the house.
He glorifies Aryan to Anupama and vice versa.
And he even requests Bigg Boss to send a 400-word love letter for Amit from girlfriend Neeru. Apparently, the TV actor is missing her unbelievably. Cho chweet, no?
While on the subject of Ravi's interest in everyone's love life, it seems the affairs of his own heart are also generating some discussion in the house.
While Roopali tries to impress him to get a headstart in Bhojpuri cinema, their bonding and incessant chatter becomes a point of discussion in the house, with everyone wondering if there's more than just genuine friendship brewing between the two.
    Is a certain Nagma listening?

    Kashmera Evicted!
Since nominated, Kashmera was fully aware that few people in the house wanted her to stay. As the voting results were declared, it was clear that even the audience wanted her to pack her bags. Kashmera is thrown out of the Bigg Boss's house. The otherwise gutsy woman burst into tears as soon as she was given the news. Kashmera said that she didn't wanted to be a doormat like Roopali to stay back in the house. Neither did she wanted to be a drama queen like Rakhi who would go to any level to get the attention from the audiences. In the end, she said that now Bigg Boss's house would look empty as she won't be there to entertain the people. Poor Kashmera! We understand dear, it really hurts when you're rejected. Anyways, good luck and goodbye to this confident lady.

Day 20: Drama, romance and backstabbing
It looked like yet another beautiful day when Bigg Boss woke up the housemates with music at 8 a.m. But fate had something else in store for them. As the sleepy contestants got started on their daily chores, Amit went into the kitchen and began preparing ginger-garlic paste in one of the cups he found on the table. However, the harmless cup was the one Rakhi used everyday. When she discovered that Amit had spoilt it, she threw it on the floor in a fit of anger. This was just the beginning of the melodrama, which lasted the entire day. Rakhi went to Kashmera and told her that Amit had done it purposely to taunt her. Kashmera fuelled the fire by asking her to keep quiet. Next, Rakhi confronted Amit. He, however, instead of apologising, shouted at her: "Don't get on my wrong side Rakhi or I'll throw you out of here." A hurt Rakhi retaliated by shouting, "Haath lagakar to dekh, haath tod doongi tera." The tirade lasted for a long time and finally Rakhi rolled on the floor in rage. Meanwhile, Kashmera tried to use the situation to her advantage by bitching about Rakhi to the guys in an attempt to win their friendship. Though Amit apologised to Rakhi later, she was in no mood to listen to him and shouted at him again. Heartbroken, Rakhi cried for a long time. Roopali tried to comfort her and asked her to eat as she had not eaten anything since morning. Rakhi was fasting for Kashmera. By then Rakhi had realised that Kashmera had been using her. She told Roopali that she would break her fast and her friendship with Kashmera because it was useless to do something like that for someone who was not worth it. Music or tension ki dawa?: The fight soured the atmosphere in the house. Bigg Boss played music to try and alleviate the tension. The housemates responded enthusiastically, dancing to the beats. Amit danced with his girlfriend's photo (though it seemed a tad affected, guess pyar aisa bhi hota hain). Only Rakhi stayed away. Bigg Boss rewards the gang: Bigg Boss was quite pleased with the performance of the team in the weekly game. As a reward he sanctioned an extra Rs 2,500 for the weekly budget. Everybody gathered in the hall and celebrated the moment. Then they sat together and enthusiastically made the monthly list of groceries. Rakhi says sorry: Later in the day, Rakhi apologised to everyone for her behaviour. She went to Rahul and said it was a mistake. Like a true saint Rahul replied, "What happened was fine, what is happening is also fine with me." But you could see the indifference in his eyes as he asked her to take a chill pill.

Who's Rakhi's secret lover?: Cup to bahana tha, tumhe Amit ko gussa jo dikana tha! Is that the truth? Well, only Rakhi can tell us that. Rakhi went to the confession room at night and told Bigg Boss to forgive her for her behaviour. She also told him that the incident had made her realise her love for Abhishek—a friend who loved her a lot. She said she had never valued his love, but now she will express her feelings to him. Later, she also decided to request Bigg Boss for a photograph of Abhishek. Maybe Rakhi just wants to show Amit—ek photo mere paas bhi hain!

Day 19: Guys take over the kitchen
The girls have been grumbling for sometime that the guys are lazy and don't help out in the kitchen. This morning, however, saw the guys all charged up and ready to cook breakfast. While Amit, Rahul and Deepak cooked, Ravi was still fast asleep. He woke up only when Amit served him breakfast. Amit seemed to be irritated with the girls, especially Ragini, who seems to be the new target of the boys. Ravi called her 'Shaitan ka bachcha' and one of the most crooked minds in the house. The rest of them sat in their room complaining about Kashmera and the girls. Roopali thrown out of her room: Lord, how much we can write about this poor lady, who's been kicked around like a football in the house? Kashmera began targeting Roopali right from morning, passing comments on her. Later, when Kashmera, Anupama, Rakhi and Ragini sat together bitching about the guys, Roopali entered the room. Kashmera said that she won't speak in front of her and so a dejected Roopali went to the guys' room and told them about her plight. She also told the audiences: "She [Kashmera] is a dirt bag. Please vote her out." Arre itni bhi kya jaldi hain Roopali. Remember you were in the same boat last week? You never know whose turn it is to go. Ragini has a crush on Aryan: We caught Aryan and Anupama getting cosy on the veranda, holding hands under the table. Arre yaar camera chalu hain, kuch to sharam karo! Aryan said that he has a strong feeling that Ragini likes him and that initially he had spent some time flirting with her until he found Anupama. A jealous Anupama looked quite angry with the amused Aryan. Thoda roothna thoda manana! Kya love story hain! Finally rescued from the Taapu: At noon Bigg Boss announced that the Taapu, Sultan and Ghulam game was over. The decision was received with cheers from the gang. Bigg Boss also appreciated the dedication with which the team had conducted the game and asked them to gear up for the next surprise. Bahut dhaar hain is gubbare mein: Ragini was the anchor for the new game called 'Gubbare ki dhaar'. The game was as interesting as its name. According to the rules, each pair had to inflate a balloon, cover it with shaving foam and shave it with a razor. Ravi and Roopali were seen struggling with the balloon, while Deepak and Anupama did it with lan. The team had a fun time playing the game. All thanks to Bigg Boss! Amit expressed his hatred for Kashmera: When Bigg Boss called Amit into the confession room and asked about his opinion of the show, he said he was loving it. Well, Amit you're always grumbling and unhappy—how do the audience know you're loving it? He also said that he hated certain individuals like Kashmera and wanted to stay away from Aryan, who, according to him, is quite dangerous. Dangerous for whom, you or Anupama? Rakhi is now 'dukhi' for Kashmera: Rakhi is so sad and upset about Kashmera's nomination that she wanted to keep a two-and-a-half day fast for her. Although she looked a little worried when Kashmera said that she may stay back. Arre Rakhi ji, yeh public hain joh sab jaanti hain. Why all the natak?

Who's after Roopali—Ravi or Rakhi?: Poor Roopali is in trouble again! On one side, Kashmera is troubling her and on the other side it is Rakhi. She told Roopali that people were talking about her friendship with Ravi, and that Ravi likes her. "Jo insaan apni biwi ka naheen, woh kisi ka naheen," blurted a concerned Rakhi. Poor Roopali was quite miserable when she asked Rahul for advice. Like a true mentor Rahul told her not to listen to Rakhi because she was just playing hardcore politics.

Day 18: Rakhi claims she has changed
Playing the role of sultan comes easy to Rakhi. And it showed as she sat on the floating raft, explaining to Ravi how she has changed for the good. Carol was playing her slave. She said that she had trusted the wrong person and had decided to mend her ways now. Ravi was mean when he held Kashmera responsible for all the misunderstandings and bitched about her. Later Carol was seen reading out the Bible to Rakhi and the girls had a discussion about good deeds. We agree Rakhi is making quite an effort to be a different person. At least she can say she tried! Morning Raga: Bigg Boss started playing the morning jingle at 8 a.m. This time it was Preity's Dil hain mera diwana. One by one the inmates peeped out of their blankets. An irritated Ravi yawned aloud, while Kashmera started swinging to the rhythm, toothbrush in hand. The day's mood was set. Is Rakhi the next to be nominated?: While the guys were still in bed, Ravi told the others about his conversation with Rakhi and her claim that she has changed. Amit contradicted him saying Rakhi changes colours faster then a chameleon. According to him, she is feeling insecure because Kashmera has been nominated. Everybody agreed that if Kashmera is evicted, then Rakhi might be the next one to be nominated. Well, let's wait and see. Shoot-out in the Bigg Boss house: From time to time, Bigg Boss keeps the contestants entertained by supplying incredible sound effects in the house. This time loud gunshots filled the rooms. Ravi and Amit were seen acting out a shoot-out scene on their beds, amusing the others in the room. Kashmera swallows a bitter pill: Since she was nominated Kashmera's mood has changed completely. She is usually seen in the kitchen nowadays, chopping vegetables. When Anupama asked her why, she said that everybody was treating her with sympathy, which was quite irritating. So she was avoiding others in the house. Why would someone as hot cry for hot water?: Rakhi's need for attention seems to be escalating day by day. The role of sultan has gone to her head. She began crying when no one bothered to heat water for her bath. A hassled Carol who was massaging Ravi's feet ran to the kitchen to heat water for her. Later Kashmera was heard commenting that it was not water that she was crying for, but the fact that she was not getting any attention from the guys. Good observation Kashmera. We'll definitely miss that next week. What say? Confession or the cry-box: Around 5 p.m. Kashmera was called into the confession room by Bigg Boss. When asked how she was feeling in Bigg Boss's house, Kashmera blurted out that she had been nominated because everybody was scared of her. The fact that she won't wash other people's undies has gone against her. When Carol was called she said she was quite sure of her nomination, as certain people were against her. Roopali cried again as she thanked Bigg Boss for making her realise the importance of her parents. When Rakhi was called in, she tried to convince Bigg Boss that she washed others' clothes to keep herself busy. Rakhi at her best: It was time for Rakhi's mimicry show at the poolside. Everybody cheered and clapped as she enacted Rahul Roy, Anupama and Ravi. Wearing a green top and grey jeans she entertained the gang like a true performer. Sach ya chunauti: It was time for yet another interesting game—Sach ya chunauti. Everybody had to pick a chit and ask a question to the other contestant. Ragini asked Rahul what was the craziest thing he had done to impress a girl. Rahul told her about how he kept doing things to please a girl when he was on a cruise. Carol asked Ragini whom she likes the most and hated the most in the Bigg Boss house? Ragini surprisingly named Kashmera as her favourite. She said she hated the voice that instructs them. When the same question was asked to Carol she said she didn't like Kashmera as she didn't trust her. Similarly, Amit also admitted his dislike for Kashmera.

Sultans of the day: Rakhi, Roopali, Ravi Kissen, Aryan and later on Ragini played the sultan. Each one enjoyed their turn splashing water, bitching and sleeping on the raft.

Rupali Ganguli is having a very hard time on Bigg Boss. After the first week, where everyone was against the 'old and wise' Deepak Parashar and the 'special' Bobby Darling, everyone now is up in arms against Rupali. So much so that the hatred for Deepak Parshar has come down thanks to her.

Rupali tries to be nice to every one. Then why she is she being targeted? Her mother Rajni Ganguli has all the answers, as she knows her daughter best. "She is very innocent and every one is jealous and insecure because she is different and because she is really nice, Rakhee said, "Neki kar aur dariya mein daal (Do good and don't think about it after that) and that's what we had taught her from childhood too. That's the sanskar (traditions) that I have given her," her mother added.

Rupali was seen confessing how she was witnessing such dirty politics, manipulations and groupism for the first time in her life. Her arch enemy currently, Kashmera Shah on her part had lashed out against her saying how she lied about not knowing how to cook and then ending up cooking so well. The mother defends the daughter and has unkind words for Kashmera.

"She actually never knew how to cook, but two days before Bigg Boss, she underwent training in our kitchen to make different dishes and it's obvious she learnt well. As you see she is doing well. She is not like Kahsmera who said she took five years to learn how to cook a chappati. Kashmera speaks pure nonsense. She plays cheap politics and pits one person against the other. She is also a liar. Rupali is a girl who believes that 'where there is a will, there is a way'," the angry mum shoots back.

Mrs Ganguli must be actually feeling sorry for her daughter who shed so many tears on the show. Will Rupali be able to cope? "We have taught her how to be truthful. So the truth will always win. It's always so," she says firmly. "Rupali is very straightforward and she speaks her mind without thinking about whether anyone will like it or not. So people are against her. Politics and diplomacy is not in our family and we are against people who do this," she adds.

Rupali's mum is confident that her daughter will survive and doesn't want her to come back so soon to the safety net of her home. "No, there is no question of coming back so soon. She has to there for at least one or two weeks more so that she can teach them a lesson and make them realise that she too is strong. In junior KG, when children take admissions some cry and some laugh. When the ones who cry start laughing, the others end up crying," she adds.

Leave aside the world, Rupali's mum is by her side come what may. Now whether Rupali manages to fight back and prove the power of her truth is still one big question.

'They behaved like housewives from Bhiwandi
    By: Shaheen Parkar

    Meethi chuuri: Kashmera Shah
Bigg Boss's surprise evictee this week is Kashmera Shah, and she feels her exit will make the Sony reality show extremely dull. "All the colourful people are out now, so where's the fun?"

Kashmera feels that there is no one on the show (other than her, of course!) who will stand up and speak honestly, "especially the ones who will call a spade a spade."

How did your biggest ally (Rakhi) turn foe?
When Rakhi broke the fast she had kept so that I could remain on the show, I knew that I would be voted out. It was extremely wrong on her part. I saw through her and that was the end. I realised she couldn't be trusted. I never voted for her ouster. Rakhi has lost a friend forever.

Is Krishna (Govinda's nephew) the new man in your life?
I like him and we are doing a film together. At the moment, my marriage with Brad Listermann is not officially off. We are giving each other time. So let's see…

You stopped eating food for the last six days…
I couldn't digest that cooking/serving act put up by Rupali, Carol and Co. They behaved like housewives from Bhiwandi! I survived on salads this week. I didn't want to cook/ serve people like Rahul Roy and Amit Sadh. I'll cook biryani for Salman instead! As it is, the girls were a bunch of bad cooks. The stuff was terrible. Rupali knew no cooking at all. I must admit that Rakhi was the only one who knew how to cook. Deepak and Bobby were also good cooks, but they were voted out.

You came across as the one who instigated people on the show.
That was the impression I created for being upfront. I am not a Miss Goody-Two-Shoes sort of person and won't speak about the charitable things I have done. Like the rest, I did not feel the need to be extra helpful. I spoke the truth about the reasons why we were in Bigg Boss's house. I don't believe in pretending and playing to the camera, unlike the rest.

Who were your real friends in the house?
    Ragini, Aryan and Anupama.

Where do you go from Bigg Boss?
I'm back to my stage shows. Now I'm going to happily tuck into some good food made by my cook, Suraj.
