No jab, just an observation. I observed a superiority complex in the bullies, I made that point here. Bangladeshis pointed out throughout this post that that's how they saw it too. Perceptions matter.

3. No, it is not divisive to use labels when it is a fact that there were Indians, a Bangladeshi, and a language and a global audience involved to call it "Indian," "Bangladeshi," and "Hindi/Bengali." You can suggest synonymns for this if you have any because I do want to mention how the labels motivated the assault in my opinion. I cannot skate over it and ignore it.

4. Again, difference between ethnocentrism and discrimination. Let's try an analogy. If US courts demanded absolute proof for discrimination, most of our cases would not exist today. That's why we entertain the revolutionary idea that symbolic and covert discrimination can and will happen.

I feel like the only reason people even feel that he was wrong based on nationality is because he came from a different country. Had he been from the Indian side of the border, nobody would have called it racism for the way he speaks. Even if he was from west bengal.
You guys remember how Zulfi Sayed was incessantly mocked for his south indian accent ? Nobody said that it should be national outrage back then. Last year when a contestant blatantly said "I don't trust Bengalis" no one thought that should be national outrage either.

Quite frankly, I don't think anything that happens on a shitty show like BB should ever become a national outrage especially not in a country where there is mass killings going on in the name of ethnicity, language and religion.

I agree to disagree. I saw it differently. There we go. Opinions, I have them. Just like my OP.

I'm proud of him as a fellow Bangladeshi and feeling sorry for him as i now realize that Indians are not sympatheitic or amiable like us cos when shilpa was treated badly in the house we were truly sympathetic towards her and was rooting for her win,bt it's pitiful for us that Asif has not got that sympathy for being ragged in that house by the so called celebrities there hence was more brutally humiliated by the biased host of the show whom i once upon a time used to love as an actor!
i'm sooo sorry if i made anyone unhappy by my post bt i was totally frustrated by the treatment hurled upon Asif in the show and this post jst drove me to vent out my frustrstion!Needless to say we Bangladeshis may be a developing country of this world with a corrupted political background or the curse of poverty,bt we are not so miser in showing our hospitality and kindness to a foreigner who have come to visit us from a different country,it was sso much pathetic for this cause also as we used to thought that India and Bangladesh is two countries with only a lil distance and much similarity between the culture, tradition and heritage so we will be always treated a frnds there rather an outsider bt i was awfully wrong!
anyway, sorry for my loong post bt i had to say them and Mary i must say that u're a person whom God has made himself with a heart of gold as even after being a total foreigner u identified with Asif and penned down such an amazing post.for the likes of u,world is still going on despite filling with soo much negativity and chaos all around!hats off to u dear for writing this post and i truly respect u for this!

Fair enough. I didn't get my answers but I guess you are entitled to your opinions. My personal opinion is that observations are not facts and one should be careful when they pass off such as observations as facts especially in a place that is as volatile as the subcontinent.

I apologize for any offensive words I have used.

Again, was it nationality, racism, ethnocentrism, or discrimination that got you going? Because you are alternating and I am CONFUSED. 😕

If you look at the Bangladeshi person's comment above, you will see why the different nation part brought up their nationality and hurt pride for Asif's treatment. When repeated mentions of fish-loving and Bangla accented pronunciation comes up, not only Bangladeshis, but Bengalis also take it personally. For Bangladeshis it double because they died for their language. That's as far as absolute proof you will get.

Just a question here- Did any of us who were disagreeing with Mary here made any remark against your country... Please dont take offence in what some are stating here as contrary view... People are just saying that it was not due to nationality ..and thats just their POV like Mary has when she expressed it thru this post...
Again I will say..Please dont generalise opinion on whole nation like that...coz then yes you will offending unknowingly many more people...

Apology accepted. I answered point by point about where I was coming from in my thinking and you still didn't get your answers. That was unfortunate. But I think in analogies, I cannot help it. These silly social scientists and their lack of absolutes. 😆

Lastly, I never passed off my opinions as facts. My last para said I was not out to offend with how I saw things. That is another way of saying, this is my observation and my opinion.

Edit: I own, I did say these petty bullies did not make their country proud or show India is the best light. For which they should be ashamed because India and Indians are better than this. That I stand by because I believe well of Indians. If that instigates nationalism, again, it went quite the opposite way of what I intended.
