I have been on the receiving end of such bigotry many times. Caste is often related to class, social status, education. People who have traditionally belonged to forward castes are usually in the upper echelons of Indian society and those who are from the backward castes are usually at the bottom. There are exceptions ofcourse but you will be hard pressed to find a lot of backward caste business tycoons.

Take Bollywood itself.

I remember a few years ago, Riya Sen (A bollywood actress) made some really derogatory remarks about Africans. And when SRK of all people himself advertises skin lightening cream products then that leaves very little to be desired. These people are supposedly the cream of the crop, progressive, enlightened etc.

I guess you are confusing the two issues. Yes, there is a class barrier in all sections of India but that has nothing to do with the ads of matremonial columns. Those are for finding matches which suites you. The thing is most of the people have differet practices depending on which cast and region they belong and it is easier to adopt for a person from same cast and region, hence the preferance and not because the other casts ae looked down upon. It is same as there would be issues to a lower extent if the two partners are from different religion even if we do not consider the pressures of the society.

There's nothing wrong in what she said. I think people tend to prefer marrying someone from the same caste if possible b/c the rules, rituals, beliefs and thoughts are more aligned with each other. I mean it's not just an Indian thing. My Best friend (gujju) was dating a Christians for like 2 years and then he broke up with her b/c she wouldn't convert to Christianity and he and his family wanted him to marry someone who was more "christian". Granted, he shouldn't have asked her to convert and he should have told her his beliefs to spare her the heart-break...but a lot of people in this world are like that. They want to share a life with someone who shares similiar beliefs.

Besides, I think Shilpa and Apurva dated and got to know one another...so it's not about being orthodox or not. It's just seeing how well they gel and if they click.

I don't think Shilpa said anything wrong.. in arranged marriages people do find it comfortable to marry within the same cast to minimize future adjustments. Nothing wrong with that 😊

Wow. And you're a perfect example of a close-minded individual living under a rock. Way to be completely rude to someone who is sharing their opinion. And there's nothing more "gawaar" than someone talking about their arse and looking like a fool. You do realize that "no indian" statement makes you look like an idiot and even worse a jackass.

Absolutely nothing wrong with what she said. It's a preference. I like men over 6 feet. She likes 'em Brahmins. Her taste, her life. If she is a castist, I am a heightist. 😆 Kaiko piche padela re mai??

I wasn't trying to mix the two issues but I have seen online ads which say "any caste/state but low castes". Don't you think that's open discrimination ? Sure, I agree with you there are people who are not discriminatory and just want some one of same background but there are many people who do have such reservations and a condescending attitude.

May be it didn't come off properly as I haven't slept for the last 24 hours.

I don't think der's anything wrong with what Shilpa said. Frm their convo it seems it wasn't exactly a love match, but a setup done by a common frnd and things clicking!

Anyways dis forum has always been to quick to judge.

I am sorry if I misunderstood you but yes, there are a lot of cast dicrimination in practice. Some do it overtly and some covertly. But then this has been in place for centuries. Not an excuse but then it takes time for people to start accepting newer beliefs. Like my parents told us during their time even dating before marriage was a big taboo even with your own fiancee, the people who allowed their daughters to go out with their fiancee was cnsidered going out of line. So it takes time for society to adopt. Give it some time and slowly it is changing and it would change. I find a much more evil is gender discrimination which is there everywhere and in much more open and dangerous form
