And even if she does think that she should only marry into Brahmins, who are we to call her regressive for that ? Plenty of celebrities out there who marry into their own caste, religion, whatever. They hold similar beliefs but don't usually say it out on TV. Shouldn't we hold them all to the same standards then ? I would only call her regressive and a casteist if she speaks in a demeaning manner towards other castes or ethnicities. I live here in United States and even here inter racial dating is still not as common as people think it is. Whites pretty much stick with Whites for the most part, Blacks stick with Blacks even in the most urban areas. Forget about rural America which is even more traditional. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with racism but just a preference for similar cultural background for compatibility reasons. I have preference for girls of certain ethnicities over others (including my own) but it also means that I have to live with the fact that there are going to be compatability issues.

At the end of the day, every one should do what they deem as best for them and what makes them happy instead of trying to live up to some one else's standards. It's their life.

White is not a caste but a race, Black too is not a caste, but a race, so u cannot compare a brahim with a white or black, u'll have to compare an indian with a black or white, race with a race and not caste with a race.

Hope your parents come over their traditional beliefs, come out of the mental shackles and do what is right and that is hug you, your hubby and kids...and bless you all!😊

At times it pains me...its impossible to straight jacket our country and countrymen...Its India-Bharat-Hindustan...all at the same time and the three can have little similarity with each other over so many things!😕

some of these sick indians when go to foreign shores become sicker with their ghetto mentality.

Yes, but the context is similar and the analogy still holds.

Besides caste has now transcended itself into tribal identities quite like the ethnicities in a western setting. People identify with it based on birth and lineage basis as opposed to the traditional meaning which was associated with the profession.

sorry, the analogy doesn't hold in indian context...there are castes and subcastes and then communities...nothing to do with black or white race of US and Europe. Urban and upper middle class india doesn't believe in much of caste, it's only class, social status, education, etc.

Urban and upper middle class definitely believes in caste, may be not all but surely a good number of them do. Open up any matrimonial and you can very easily see it. I have seen this behavior in Mumbai of all places. A lot of people who try to come across as seemingly cultured, progressive etc conceal and cloak their hatred and insecurities very well but it often comes out. I have been on the receiving end of such bigotry many times. Caste is often related to class, social status, education. People who have traditionally belonged to forward castes are usually in the upper echelons of Indian society and those who are from the backward castes are usually at the bottom. There are exceptions ofcourse but you will be hard pressed to find a lot of backward caste business tycoons.

Take Bollywood itself.

I remember a few years ago, Riya Sen (A bollywood actress) made some really derogatory remarks about Africans. And when SRK of all people himself advertises skin lightening cream products then that leaves very little to be desired. These people are supposedly the cream of the crop, progressive, enlightened etc.

Oh come on.. wanting to marry in your own community/caste does not mean you look down upon others.

When it comes to marriage, I think every desi's preference would go out to someone from the same caste. Our parents too have a role to play in that.. however, of course an individual doesn't know what destiny has written for them.

then I am a gawaar, a proud one at that..

The irony of this post. On one hand you are chiding me for wanting to marry in my caste and on the other you are looking down upon on Bangaldeshis, Africans and Latin Americans?! 🤣 Get your head out of your arse. 😛

Take that chappal and hit your head with it.
