Its one thing having a character like Maya who is supposedly grey, an anti hero.. Theres limitations to how far you can take it, how dark you can go with them, to create fear or anger in the audience, but at the same time manage to do a 360 and pull the audience back into loving this character.
Shes an unconventional character in the sense that, usually a character like hers would be classed as a villain and hated by the audience, but the way she was created, portrayed and handled, we cant help but love her.

Having said that, you should never take it too far to the point that the character can no longer be redeemed. I feel thats whats happening with Maya. First, the false rape thing and today what she did with Vandana. How does one justify that? How is it normal? How do we feel sorry for her? How are we supposed to still love her after this sick behaviour?

I just dont understand how the writers can come back from that. They're moving in to unchartered territory and they need to be careful or theres no coming back. It doesnt help that pretty much every character in the show now thinks shes dark/negative because shes dug her own grave. She's got no one in her corner. (well apart from Samay, but hes just as bad as her)

Im completely and utterly being put off her character, and thats not a good thing. And i'm sure i'm not alone.

Well the character was always like this and now the credit is to be given how they made us like her shown from victim to manipulative maintaining that maya was always like this it was for us to figure out with clues given. The character made audience argue among themselves. Even after watching today s episode some people are supporting her.
For me I have watched it for thriller. To see psychopath. I like her but in a twisted way. I don't support her but I m here for her character.

The rules, I think, are set according to what genre does the book/show/movie belongs to. Take Gone Girl, the movie/book, this show is inspired from. Amy, the protagonist (& the antagonist as well) was a psychopath and she got away with every single criminal offence of hers in the end and got her husband stuck in marriage with her for a life time. So, from what all has been shown in season 1 and season 2, may be, their intention is to establish Maya as a psychopath too albeit an unsaid one/unofficial one by slowly making her cross all possible limits and making her reach the maximum degree of psychopathy. She already, imo, has gone beyond redemption and there's no turning back. Now, it depends on the writers/makers as to how they take her character from here on and if or not they have any redemption planned for her in store.

The thing is whether in real or fiction a person can always redeem them selves. I think it's wrong to say that if you have done bad things you will never be forgiven. To be forgiven, to redeem themselves are sometimes the biggest motivation people have to be better, to do good and to ask for forgiveness. She right now can not be forgiven because she doesn't regret her actions, she doesn't want to be better. Maybe she doesn't even understand that she is doing something wrong. When she tried to be good, one person didn't think she could change and treated her like crap. When she couldn't tolerate it anymore she back to her old ways. Maybe she would be a better person if her mother in law gave her a chance.
I'm not saying you should blindly trust a person who has done alot of bad stuff, but you should forgive if they ask for forgiveness and give them a chance to redeem them selves. Same goes for Maya. If she truly regrets, truly asks for forgiveness and tries to be good then she can be redeemed. But only people she has wronged can forgive her.

A few things are built in they are a part of instinct a psychopath can go to any extent in harming others...they have vague opinion of right and wrong...The justification of whatever she is doing is her mental illness and she should be cured as soon as possible...The question of redemption arise when a person has consciousness and sense of right and wrong and still astray...Maya use to have that consciousness to some extent but it is completely overshadowed by her insecurities and the feeling of being betrayed...So she is in being the full form of herself...She is wrong...but self-control is something she doesn't have..

I agree with you it was unbearable to watch the episode today. Day by day they are butchering Maya's character. She wasn't this brutal in season 1 and all of a sudden she's being extreme. She use to love her mother so much and now she treats her like shit. I don't understand what the creators are trying to do. It's just sickening.

Whether Maya is redeemed or not. Before that cvs and writers lost what they actually want to show.
Season 1 they created a Maya as an abused child with Grey shades. She has many charactists of Amy Dune.
She was evil yet audience loved her because she was not typical TV vamp.
But when you oppose such a character her enemy should be as powerful as her.
Or at least evolve to think what Maya can be next.
But makers failed to make sanjh as pure white. She had many flaws which made her character annoying.
If sanjh was like Amy's sister in law who supported her brother deadly against Amy or the police officer who took realistic way to understand Amy was real culprit . I could relate her more.
In season 2 cvs is showing maya from grey to dark shades of Grey. I still believe she is not complete black.
Problem is maya is strong not that.
Other characters are weak.
Let them be strong first.

Those who are with Maya should at least do this to her for her sake!
Pray for her & request her True Friend to step in & remove/erase her obsessive love from her mind!
She can not do it on her own! She lost that kind of self -control! Only He can do it for her!
Before things go out of hand, it has to happen!
Ask her enemies like Saanjh & VM to take away Arjun from her life!
Ask Samay to kidnap her to somewhere!

Maya! Don't get yourself lost in self-destruction!
Arjun is not worth to your life!

Maya is still left with a long life!
She has to live!
She needs peace &It is samay that she learns to allow everyone around her also- to live peacefully, by sacrificing this worthless obsession!

I agree with the topic maker, they are going down the point of no return... how can you just a redemption arc by getting "treatment" and then becoming positive,". Many negative characters are ones we love to hate and the grey characters we love to root for because they are flawed, but 3D, and touch a chord in us. Maya is none of those things.. specially after deliberately Ayan accusing of rape and breaking Vandys hands... that categorically falls under misuse of law and abuse

Coming to the quote: I too see the resemblance to gone girl but it's a flawed and misinformed/ misinterpreted adaptation of the same. The events that trigger Amy's series of events are the recession, financial hardships and her husband cheating on her. She starts by planning out a revenge, then in comes the third angle of vices of social media and hoe that affects our perception and that trigger events post that. I also believe that the downward spiral is in part due to her parents writing a children's book about her making her the perfect child.. so she grew up with that ideal of 'perfect' and in a way was until the 2008 recession. What I'm saying is, none of this applies to Maya in the literal or figurative sense. There is no trigger, the story arc is completely different. This is more the abused is now the abuser with no rhyme or reason. I suspect her childhood is a huge factor, but the makers have botched it up so badly that there isn't a real relevance to Maya acting the way she is vs what she has seemingly endured.

And it's completely bizzare how though people have caught on to her, can't do anything, to stop her. Even Arjun has essentially said 'shut up and put up'

I don't think its butchering. If they always wanted to show Maya as a psychopath then whatever she's doing now is absolutely normal for her. Nobody becomes psychopath in a day. Its takes years of depression and endless insecurities to make one go insane to this extent. Pre-leap, her obsession and insecurities regarding Arjun were new. So she separated him from his family. But even after doing so, he hated her. There was nobody between them in these 3 years. Her madness increased to the extent that today she's mentally and physically torturing his brother and mother. And she'll get worse, I'm sure. She needs treatment asap which she, unfortunately, wont get. Her worst is yet to come.
