@FleetingWishes Good post. In fact, it is a much-needed thread. That is one of the reasons why I want Arya to be together which would discourage the superstitious beliefs that the society follows more than the black & white evidence. In this show, the characters try to eliminate the person & the consequences rather than the person's cause. In the name of upshaguns, the MIL's or even the grandmother ill-treat their DIL when the diya get extinguished or the plate or when sindoor falls on the ground. The so-called pundits themselves don't know what is going to happen in their lives & they predict about others. When God/Ganesha has sent Maya to the world, it is for some purpose. God loves all his children equally. Even if her friends have isolated her because of Ashwin, it is Ganesha who accepted her as she is. She is insane in the eyes of the world but not in His eyes.

Ha ha I remember mentioning the same in the bolly forum. I don't know what has been pledged by the show makers but this show supplies an overdose of superstition through these priests and rituals. Thankfully Vandana didn't have an epiphany yet. 😆

What shame indeed if this has been marketed as a progressive show.
An indian priest who happnes to bump into Maya & Arjun at the middle of a road in Mauritius to apprise her bhoot bhabishya to Arjun was no astrology but pure shit!
And that priest's overacting was harrowing that I did a little happy dance when he was found dead the next morning. J/K ! 😆

@Bold so true. Also if a show itself keeps on hammering the point that this person or character is evil then what's the point of making it a mystery? Also we as an audience aren't dumb and can make our own decisions.

I would politely disagree with you here. I've always thought that Maya and Arjun are incompatible and toxic for one another. Maya's life was so so much better before Arjun came into it and so was his. All they did was provide one another external benfits. She--luxury and money and he--protection from Ashwin. Wheras internally they've been worse for another. Arjun doesn't have the depth or temperament to be with a woman like Maya--he lacks that maturity and even though I'm going to say and back him up that he has tried his best, he and Maya have had too much water under the bridge.

If they show her and Arjun being together (in a romantic sorts) then it will give a wrong message that all you need to do is stay in a toxic relationship and love the other person. It's a tight slap on the faces of all those people who've been in such toxic, controlling relationships with people like Maya and have somehow survived.
If they choose to give Arjun and Maya a happy ending they need to first show them going their separate ways. Maya healing and getting medical help. Maya realizing her mistakes and faults too and then they can get together.

Or she can go ahead and get someone else--someone better for someone else.

However Idk if the ending's going to be that way. It can also go the gone girl way. the CVs have all of a sudden turned her into a psychopath of sorts. Psychopaths are always psychopaths. In science no therapy helps them because they're unable to feel any empathy which is why they'll never realize or accept their wrongdoings. So I've no idea how the show will go. Which is why it's so frustrating how they've made pandits and prophecies say Maya is the culprit and black saaya and then gone onto prove it--giving fodder to superstitions.

They should have never shown these superstitions in the first place.

Agree on the whole regressive saas bahu dynamics.

Nice post Rida!
All i can say is, these prophecies are made to just add to the drama quotient. Totally agree that they are regressive and the way makers keep repeating them it can indeed give a wrong msg to ppl to blindly believe in superstitions. Seriously the pandit just predicting Arjun's downfall in Mauritius out of the blue in the middle of his Jaap was highly illogical n stupid. Maybe reading Maya's kundali or something would make sense, the way the pandit did just before the marriage because maybe, given Maya's mental condition, her life would obviously be affected by it which i think could be predicted. Because if u notice, the pandit predicted almost everything about maya just before the marriage. He did not only say bad stuff, he said good stuff too. That Maya's love would be her strength, and would take Arjun to great heights. What wasn't justified probably, was Vandana's reaction to it. Because she focussed only on the bad parts and went pleading to Saanjh to stop the marriage.

Diya bhujing and those Thalis burning and all are just to add to the drama quotient. That maya is dangerous for Arjun and his family. It's like telling the audience in a not so obvious way.

This show is egomanical. If you can call a show that. It doesn't show us--but repeatedly tells us--that it is so clever, path-breaking, and so hatke and the most favorite phrase 'first time on Indian TV' when all it does is use the same tropes in a new dressing. What we have is a khichri. Season 2 is still far better than Season 1 where they took so many liberties with the character sketches and did way too much foreshadowing.

God don't remind me of the whole pandit cycle. This show has had so so many pandits homing in the same fact. Like are you serious sir? Maya is bad for Arjun. We get it. Can you please stop being so illogical and blatant?😆

Vandana doesn't need an epiphany if her current condition is any indication.😆

Exactly. It was so repetitive and illogical and just so stupid. One time fine two times okay but every single episode post and pre this--it happened. it's like watching a thriller movie--trying to figure out who does what--and the writers keep showing you through religious hints that oh look this is the culprit. What is the point then?

And let's say a diya bhujing is shown. Fine it cannot exactly harm anyone. But again and again showing pandits and all pointing out the storyline--pointing at Maya as the culprit--all symbols from God himself pointing that Maya will be your doom is heights of illogicality and dumbness. We don't need the plot force-fed to us. And imagine the impact it will have on people who actually believe in such superstitions and for them to get such validation that too from a supposedly -progressive show-.

Completely agree!
This show is glorifying superstitions. Vandana called Maya Apshagun manhoos ...pandit called her kala saaya... nd Now actually they r showing all these superstitions are all true. That's the most regressive thing to show.

While I agree with your point of "toxic relationship" having no future but in Beyhadh's case Maya isn't that bad as she is made out to be...

The problem is Maya tried her level best to win VM's heart and be accepted. But it was VM's "Zidd" that pushed Maya to extreme. And if VM was not enough Arjun himself pushed Maya into making her feel Insecure. The kind of behaviour that Arjun and Saanjh displayed infront of Maya in the past was in no way Appropriate.

And Maya having seeing her mother and Ashwin relationship being kaput due to Shipra has made Maya believe that the only way to maintain Love relationship is by controlling.

Arjun is largely to be blamed for Maya's controlling behaviour.

They could have easily shown the same--or hinted that Maya might prove to be toxic--in a lot of other different and intelligent ways. But using pandits and their prophecies and superstitions to do it is the most regressive thing ever. And they also went on to prove them. Now any woman in her home can say oh look superstitions are true and do the same to her bahu or anyone else whom she's superstitious about. Why give these things such validation? It's absolutely abominable.

Nobody's bad to be honest. Good people--sane people--have toxic relationships. It's not about how you are as a person. It's about what you're doing in a relationship.
There's a phrase we use in the fictional verse. It's 'true character is revealed when your characters are in immense pressure and when they're forced to make choices in that kind of pressure.'
Maya cannot take pressure. She crumbles under it. She makes rash decisions and does wrong things. Her actions can be empathized with--people can say I understand why she did it--but they cannot be condoned.
Maya had no right to do what she did.
I may agree with the fact that Vandana treated her in the most abhorrent manner but by the end of it she too actively sought to part Arjun from his mother. She should've simply left that house and that would've been punishment enough for Vandana. But did Arjun deserve it?
Did Arjun deserve to be lied about his baby? (Assuming from the recent episodes there wasn't one)
Did Arjun deserve such lack of trust? He never emotionally or physically cheated on Maya. He should've never sought Saanjh or discussed his other problems with her but he was still trying his best to be with Maya. Maya never gave Arjun her trust or respect or his space. She should've tried to talk to him. Tried to explain that she was uncomfortable--that she was hurting. That is what you do. See no relationship is an easy sail. Sometimes your partner does things you hate. It is VERY NORMAL. Sometimes they're bestfriends with people you hate or get too angry or have a bad habit. You need to at least talk to them about it. Maya never did that. She didn't give Arjun a chance--ever--to explain his side. She issued ultimatums. Emotional blackmailing as well. In the scene where she didn't stop drinking the champagne. She should've instead talked to him.

Don't you see how toxic this relationship has been? For both of them? Maya needs medical help first and foremost. It is absolutely wrong to say that some other person is to blame for your actions. No. Whatever actions you and I take--they will always reflect on us. Not the people because of whom we're doing that. If someone does something to us--how we respond--is our character. We shouldn't stoop to their level. Ever. Whatever we do next is not on them. It's on us.
