Because we are backward.

Not alien, but we should learn from rest of the world.

This drama is showing Maya gray, but that should not be the case. She should be shown with sympethy and also her best side of character need to be in focus

I agreed on the prejudice against depression point. At the same time, I disagree against the opinion that 'depression isn't that serious so the patient should not face any prejudice '. Serious or not - any mental illnesses' sufferer should receive the best of care they can get. Depression is a serious issue and needs to be dealt with a lot of sensitivity. People suicide because of it. People self harm because of it. It is not the usual state of prolonged sadness you are imagining. People who have suffered from it will know how serious it is and your loved ones should know about it.

I agree, That 'pagalpan' word is the most derogatory way anyone could address anyone suffering from a mental illness. Suffering from mental illnesses is nothing to be ashamed of since it exactly is what it sounds like - an illness, which needs to be taken care of the very same way any physical illness is dealt with - with care and sensitivity.

I agree mental illness or even depression is not "Insanity" aka "Pagalpan" which is what people call it. In the East especially anyone with a mental illness or depression is considered "Crazy" by default. If you see a psychiatrist, you must be crazy. If you take anti-depressants, you must be crazy etc. It is such a narrow view of such a broad subject.

There was a time in the West attitudes were narrow too. But dialogue has enabled people to overcome a lot of the stigma attached to mental illness. Two people from my grandmother's side of the family from my Mom's side. (Males) suffered from depression. Fortunately, in my immediate family circle there is no such thing. But I know people who have family members and friends who have had or do have depression. In the west it is very common because there is a lot of isolation here, and people don't have a big community around them like they do in the East.

But even in the East people have such issues. Especially someone in an abusive relationship. (Jhanvi) or have an abusive parent (Maya). To then expect such people to be totally normal is not realistic. If Maya has depression or OCD or a controlling nature it is to be expected. Unless such issues are acknowledged and treated, they cannot be fixed. I don't think Maya has ever received the appropriate treatment for her condition. The "Stigma" attached to mental issues prevents a lot of people from seeking help. It's a pity. Only a change in attitude will open the door for people with mental illness to not be seen as "Crazed" and get the treatment they need to live a normal life without being a threat to themselves or others. (Depends on the nature of their illness). But whatever it is, medication or counseling is needed. Ignoring the issue won't solve it, nor will calling people crazy. That's for sure!

Actually it is Maya and her mom (the fictional characters) who are using depression as a coverup for Maya's actual mental illness.
Now people may not agree for now coz most are going ga ga over Maya 😊, but this is a thriller and Maya is not what she claims to be.
It is not the writer's view on depression.

If in fact what Maya has is NOT depression or just a result of abuse, then it's another matter. But people who have been abused can turn into psychotic characters. Suffer from psychosis, paranoid schizophrenia, OCD type illnesses etc. If in fact, Maya is a dangerous sociopath, then yes, this is not the writers take on a regular type of mental illness. She is clearly dangerous.

The issue is, has she killed someone? We know she has injured Ashwin. We believe he deserved it. But has she harmed someone who didn't deserve it? Like that Poojari Ji from Mauritius? If this is the case, then she is a criminal and cannot be treated as someone with a treatable mental illness.

Exactly... like i said in my 1st gut feeling post that Ashwin may be a parasite, but there is more to his hatred for Maya... not just money. And, some people went berserk on an assumption for a fictional character...

She appears to be dangerously mentally sick... a scheming, calculatively manipulative types... And, i am quite certain that she killed someone in her childhood and used Ashwin as a scapegoat...

Her mental illness does not seems to be the result of Ashwin's torture... probably it started after something terrible... BTW, NOT DEFENDING ASHWIN's BEHAVIOR HERE. HE IS ALSO WRONG.

@rayjain:
I dont know what Maya has done. But whatever it is, it's not something simple. Yes she broke Ashwin's leg. What else did she do is the question? Also, what led to her breaking his leg? I feel this is what finally got Ashwin to leave. I am not saying Maya has killed someone, but it's a possibility we have to entertain right now, with whatever it implies.

Of course Maya has a very serious mental illness. But it is not, or is at least not restricted to, regular clinical depression. Saanjh/the doctor saying "woh doosron ko nuksan pahuncha Sakti hai" is misleading and downright incorrect. That's not a symptom of regular clinical depression.

There is a possibility that Maya doesn't have only depression. The medicine that Saanjh found was for depression but that may not be the only thing she was getting treatment for from 9 years of age. The depression might be a symptom to something else she is suffering from.
