There is very little similarity. The only similarities I find between Indian epics and Iliad-Odyssey are power-politics and war. You see, the Indian world view or concept of existence/time/life is cyclical while western notion of life is linear. The two philosophies are very different and this is evident in epics. One more thing, Indian representation of women, though by modern standards is subjugatory but is way more progressive than theirs.

Yaar please open another thread on this topic. I so want to discuss I can't open the thread myself since I have zero knowledge on this topic.

P.S. Bheeshm had ichha mrityu so he could have removed all the arrows from his body. They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, so he wouldn't have died and returned stronger in Kurukshetra (had to stay on topic)

One thing I would like to mention, the power politics is at the centre of MB and a very imp part of Ramayan but this is not the case with the western epics where it has a small role to play.

Right now, I am running short of time, dear, so, can't open a thread. I will also have to brush up some facts regarding the epics as it's almost 3 years since I read them.

@bold - that's an interesting observation. I think he was tired of the struggles of life and really wanted to rest in the realm of nothingness. Also, the entire population was wiped out with massive destruction. This must have been really hard for him after the heart breaking war. So, he preferred to die.

@bold - this🤣. I say kahe ke liye when I am in my own self 100 percent even though I am a fully city-bred child. I think Bhishma was just being an Indian from northern India. 😆

How pitiful his state was! He could never really detach himself from his attachment for Hastinapur.

I'll stop at that. 😆

Now, even if you take the divine aspect out of it, he was a griha-yogi (as was hinted in the scene where Satyavati is leaving the palace). He stayed in the family, but he had no role. Everyone went ahead and did what they liked, and because he couldn't take sides anymore he just took himself out of the situation and chose to watch everything from a distance.

fate at its play is very dangerous indeed. We say that we make our own fate, which is very much debatable. I admire him for a lot of things as its not easy at all for one to live like he did. I also do get annoyed at many things wherein he was a spectator and he really did not or could not do anything!! But then again it is easy for us to say or comment or someone's life or the way they have chosen to live i guess. All in all I am empathetic towards him some times and at times I am sympathetic even though it was his choice.
