What are your thoughts on the way she got David to marry her by manipulating situations? Also, what are your thoughts on the way she manipulated her son Tony and made him take up business? That would not be forgiveable but as a strong woman myself, i feel that i would have a hard time accepting it if my son was a wimp! I feel that he was a qualified artist but her ambitions exceeded his. Also, he was weak enough to be influenced by a stupid newspaper report. Most successful men (artists and otherwise) ahve to learn to be beyond negative feedback so i doubt if he would have been successful anyways. I think that subconsciously he resented his mother and hence could not see her point of view. Also, she learned about her past quite dramatically - reading the diary and all, whereas he grew up with hearing the stories - it takes away the effectiveness of the ancestral heritage that he was getting. Their points of view were too diverse. I think that Kate's manipulation of her daughter in law was wrong and immoral but again, she has been shown to be haunted by her ghosts because she had devoted her life to one goal - her ancestral business, and personal relationships always took a back seat. It is an interesting character, but brings credence to the theory that women can be stronger than men if focussed on a particular goal - hence the insistence in so many cultures on setting familial goals for women, i guess. I mean ultimately, even Eve pressurized Adam to try the apple in the bible. In hindu philosophy also, Kali avatar is more vengeful than any of the male gods...

An interesting digression here - If you recognize Shakti as being energy (now discussed by some being nuclear energy) it creates both, matter and anti-matter. Shakti is clearly feminine in scriptures and it holds true for all females also...ever notice that even amongst criminals, female offenders are more violent and volatile and passionate than male? It is almost as if petty crimes dont interest women...it has to be huge - something that comes with passion otherwise it is better not to indulge.

A good character portrayal of this duality is also seen in "Gone with the Wind" I highly recommend the book, but i recommend the movie even more!

Good points.. Only thing I did not like is that Kate had a son just because of business reasons so she could hand over the business to him.. I mean I believe that once we have a kid, it is the duty of parents to try and turn them into good individuals and work towards their happiness..And yes, Tony was weak but instead of strengthening him, she just used his weakness to her advantage - maybe without realizing. I remember she says to herself "I am doing this for his own good" As for her DIL, I don't think she wanted her DIL to die - rather she was so conviced that the Dr. who was treating her was an alarmist and she was sure she would not die..Basically a woman who was possessed and obsessed by her company and business.. Not surprising considering what she had gone through, being a prisoner and held captive in war at the age of 8 or 9 and what not.

Now, if you remember the end of the story, I am sure you remember the last sentence in the story - Kate's sentence to her great grand son Robert - "I will introduce you to Zubin Mehta". Do you think that was yet another manipulative move of hers or do you think she genuinely meant it finally at the age of 90??😆

I read the book "Gone with the end". I liked Scarlett O' Hara as well. What are your thoughts on her?

I wish they can portray a better picture of India anytime. Thats why I like to watch more of the reality shows these days and shows like Kareena Kareena, where you can laugh a bit.

Yep, KK was my favourite for a long time as well!

One more question from me:

Can you describe life in your own words. O wow...now this could get long. But in short I would say life is defined as long as your next breath.

A more philosophical, long-winded answer - Life is a process which links consciousness to a creature. The beginning and the end of life are both uncertain and beyond our control. It is the actual living that we do have some mental and physical control over. Any level of faith in anything makes this existence tolerable. Life is a like an ocean where everything is basically no more than a drop...but when those drops combine they create the 'mahasagar'. While Plato says that life is just an illusionary concept, i believe that it is more of a reality that we create in an illusionary framework. What we believe will happen often does because we create our reality and define our existence. The volatility of nature often takes us on paths that we would not have imagined but again it is largely a function of age...the reality world of a 5 year old is completely different from that of a 75 year old. Ironically they may be living in the same place but its the viewpoint that is different. Thus, i feel that life is a subjective term. Not to bring up a complicated subject at this point but the pro-choice/pro-life debate has its crux in when does life begin? If it begins when cells can duplicate themselves then it begins at fertilization and ends at death. If life begins when cells can duplicate themselves without any external support than in reality none of us are alive because without the atmosphere we live in, our cells would not duplicate. Thus, to conclude, life is a phenomenon that occurs in conjunction with the right environment and there is a consciousness within the object under scrutiny.

Too weird?? well, give me ur opinion(s)!

Actually, when he does, he logs in under my id because as you can see we share the id name. But he is not very opinionated and is too lazy to type it up when he has an opinion 😉. Usually, he says something to me and when i write it up in some discussion, i say that lynn says...

And yes, Tony was weak but instead of strengthening him, she just used his weakness to her advantage - maybe without realizing. Maybe very consciously because she has been shown to be manipulative and felt that if she pushed him enough, he would cave in. I remember she says to herself "I am doing this for his own good" As for her DIL, I don't think she wanted her DIL to die - rather she was so conviced that the Dr. who was treating her was an alarmist and she was sure she would not die..I think she did not care either ways because her purpose was to have an heir at any cost. That was the reason she had encouraged her son into this marriage (by tricking him ofcourse) because the other eligible woman had had a hysterectomy. Basically a woman who was possessed and obsessed by her company and business.. Not surprising considering what she had gone through, being a prisoner and held captive in war at the age of 8 or 9 and what not. Ya, that is correct...but i think it was out of a desire to impress her parents and win David's approval that she turned out the way she did.

Now, if you remember the end of the story, I am sure you remember the last sentence in the story - Kate's sentence to her great grand son Robert - "I will introduce you to Zubin Mehta". Do you think that was yet another manipulative move of hers or do you think she genuinely meant it finally at the age of 90??😆 O i think it was meant to follow the same path as it did with Tony. People dont learn with time, they just get shrewder in getting what they want - but this is just IMHO.

I read the book "Gone with the end". I liked Scarlett O' Hara as well. What are your thoughts on her? I respect her courage, but despise her ego. Had it not been for her ego, she would not have lost all the loves in her life so mercilessly. But on the other hand, her survival instinct was what drove her ego...so it kinda became a vicious circle...kay bolto?
