Part 6
The weight of Riya’s words still hung heavy in the air.
"Aur agar tumhe ab bhi apna dukh hi apni duniya lagta hai, toh main aur intezaar nahi kar sakti."
Arjun had been through countless shootouts, faced death more times than he could count, and yet, nothing had ever prepared him for this feeling.
The feeling of truly losing someone.
Not to death.
But to the choices he had made himself.

They arrived at the victim’s house—a grand, elegant property in an upscale neighborhood. The kind of place that spoke of wealth and power, but as Arjun and Riya stepped inside, the air felt cold, almost lifeless.
A middle-aged woman sat on the sofa, clutching a handkerchief, her face pale from grief.
"Aap ACP Arjun Rawte aur Riya Mukherjee hai na?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Arjun nodded. "Ji. Hum ETF se hain. Humein aapke pati ke murder ke baare mein kuch sawaal poochne hain."
The woman—Meghna Malhotra—swallowed hard. "Mujhe ab tak samajh nahi aa raha ki yeh sab kaise ho gaya. Rajeev ek achhe insaan the. Unka koi dushman ho hi nahi sakta!"
Riya exchanged a glance with Arjun before speaking, her tone softer. "Hum samajh sakte hain, Mrs. Malhotra. Magar aise crimes aksar kisi na kisi dushmani ya personal reason se jude hote hain. Kya unhone kabhi aapse kisi tension ke baare mein baat ki thi?"
Meghna shook her head. "Nahi… par kuch din pehle woh thode stressed lag rahe the. Jab maine poocha, toh bas kaha ki ‘kuch purani baatein’ unhe pareshaan kar rahi hain."
Arjun leaned forward. "Kaisi purani baatein?"
She hesitated. "Mujhe nahi pata. Par unhone ek do baar ek naam liya tha—‘Karan’. Maine poocha kaun Karan, par unhone bas kaha ki ‘woh ek bhool hai jo laut aayi hai’."
Arjun’s eyes narrowed. "Karan kaun ho sakta hai? Unka koi business rival ya purana dost?"
Meghna thought for a moment. "Karan naam ka koi unka dost ya colleague nahi tha… kam se kam maine unse kabhi nahi suna. Lekin…"
She suddenly paused, her expression changing.
"Lekin?" Riya prompted.
"Ek purana naukar tha hamare yahan… Karan Singh. Bohot saal pehle kaam karta tha. Par ek din bina bataaye chala gaya. Maine kabhi socha bhi nahi ki Rajeev uske baare mein soch rahe the."
Riya immediately took out her notepad, jotting it down. "Kya aapke paas uska koi purana address ya contact hoga?"
Meghna shook her head. "Nahi. Yeh toh kaafi saal pehle ki baat hai… magar Rajeev ne jo kaha tha—‘bhool jo laut aayi hai’—shayad iska koi matlab ho sakta hai."
Arjun nodded. "Hum is Karan Singh ka background check karenge. Agar koi aur information yaad aaye, toh humein zaroor batayein."
They stood up to leave, but before they could exit, Meghna spoke again.
"ACP Rawte… mujhe sach jaanna hai. Mere Rajeev ke saath aisa kisne kiya?"
Arjun met her eyes, his voice firm but laced with understanding. "Hum sach tak zaroor pahunchenge, Mrs. Malhotra. Yeh mera vaada hai."
And with that, they walked out.

Arjun and Riya got into the SUV, and as he started driving back, the silence between them returned.
But this time, it wasn’t an angry silence.
It was an expectant one.
As if both of them knew that something had to be said.
Something that had been left unsaid for far too long.
After a few minutes, it was Riya who finally broke the silence.
"Tum mujhse kuch kehna chahte the?"
Arjun exhaled. "Haan."
She waited, but when he didn’t continue, she turned to him. "Toh kaho, Arjun. Main sun rahi hoon."
He tightened his grip on the steering wheel, gathering his thoughts. "Tumhe lagta hai ki maine tumse door jaane ka faisla isliye liya kyunki mujhe farq nahi padta. Magar Riya, yeh sach nahi hai."
She gave a bitter smile. "Toh phir sach kya hai?"
"Sach yeh hai ki mujhe tumse utna hi lagav ho gaya tha jitna ek waqt pe Roshni se tha," he admitted, his voice hoarse. "Aur maine dekha hai ki jab tum kisi se itni mohabbat karte ho… toh tum usse kho bhi sakte ho."
Riya inhaled sharply.
He continued, his voice laced with emotion. "Mujhe laga tha ki agar main tumhe door kar dunga, toh shayad tum safe rahogi. Tumhe woh dukh nahi milega jo maine saha hai. Lekin… maine yeh nahi samjha ki shayad maine tumhe aur zyada dukh diya hai."
For the first time, Riya saw something in his eyes that she had been searching for—honesty.
Pain.
Regret.
"Mujhe sirf ek cheez chahiye thi, Arjun," she said softly. "Tumhare saath hona. Tumhare dukh ka hissa banna, sirf tumhare ache waqt ka nahi. Lekin tumne mujhe woh mauka hi nahi diya."
He swallowed hard.
"Main ab bhi chahta hoon ki tum safe raho, Riya," he whispered. "Lekin shayad main galat tha jo socha ki tumse door rehna iska hal hai."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then, Riya let out a soft sigh. "Arjun, jo tum mehsoos karte ho, use samajhna mushkil nahi hai. Mushkil sirf yeh hai ki tum kab tak ussi dukh mein jeete rahoge?"
She looked at him, her eyes searching his.
"Kab tak apne past ko apne present pe haavi hone doge?"
The question lingered between them.
Because for the first time, Arjun Rawte wasn’t sure if he had an answer.
