Part 5
The crime scene had long been cleared, the forensic evidence sent for analysis, but Arjun’s mind remained trapped in the moment he had looked into Riya’s eyes.
A moment where he had expected warmth, familiarity, maybe even concern.
But instead, all he had found was distance.
And this time, he wasn’t sure if it was something he could ever undo.

The air inside the ETF headquarters was unusually heavy. The team was back in the briefing room, going over the details of the murder, but there was an underlying tension that no one dared to address.
Arjun sat at the head of the table, his sharp gaze scanning the forensic reports, but a part of his mind was still fixated on Riya.
She hadn’t looked at him once since they returned.
She was speaking only when necessary, her voice devoid of the warmth it used to carry when she spoke to him.
"Kya main waqai use itna door kar chuka hoon?"
"Main sirf use dukh se bachana chahta tha, lekin kya main uska sabse bada dukh ban chuka hoon?"
"Aur agar haan… toh kya ab sab kuch thik ho sakta hai?"
He clenched his jaw and forced himself to focus on the case.
"Personal emotions ko side pe rakho, Arjun. Tum yeh afford nahi kar sakte."
Rathore’s voice broke through the tense silence.
"Forensic report confirm karti hai ki victim ke haath pe jo chemical residue tha, woh potassium cyanide ka ek modified version tha," he said, tossing the report onto the table.
Riya picked it up, scanning through the details. "Cyanide ek instant poison hai, lekin yeh wala modified version dheere react karta hai. Matlab killer ne yeh ensure kiya tha ki victim kuch der tak zinda rahe."
"Aur ussi waqt usse ‘aakhri khat’ likhne pe majboor kiya hoga," Shree added.
Arjun exhaled sharply. "Killer chahta tha ki victim apni maut ko mehsoos kare. Yeh sirf ek murder nahi hai… yeh ek revenge killing hai."
Chotu nodded. "Magar revenge kis cheez ka? Kya victim ke past mein koi dushman tha?"
"Mujhe ek aur cheez ajeeb lag rahi hai," Riya murmured, flipping through the crime scene images.
Arjun’s attention immediately snapped toward her. "Kya?"
She finally looked at him then. Just for a second. But her expression was unreadable.
She turned back to the images. "Murder ke time pe victim akela tha. Darwaze pe bhi koi force entry ka sign nahi tha. Matlab killer ya toh kisi trusted person ka tha, ya phir… koi aise jo bina shor kiye andar aa sakta tha."
Shree’s fingers flew over the keyboard. "Main victim ki call records aur business partners ke backgrounds check karta hoon."
Rathore stood up. "Agar yeh revenge killing hai, toh humein victim ke personal connections pe dhyaan dena hoga. Chotu, tum uske staff aur security se pooch-taach karo. Arjun, tum aur Riya uske family se milo."
Arjun stiffened.
Riya barely reacted.
"Sir, main akeli bhi—" she started, but Rathore cut her off. "Tum dono ek saath jaa rahe ho. Discussion khatam."
There was no room for argument.
And so, for the first time since their unspoken war had begun, Arjun and Riya were forced to be alone together.
***
The drive to the victim’s house was painfully silent.
Arjun, gripping the steering wheel tightly, struggled to find the right words.
Riya, staring out the window, had no intention of making things easier for him.
Finally, he broke the silence. "Riya…"
She didn’t react.
He exhaled sharply. "Humein baat karni hogi."
"Kis baare mein, Arjun?" Her voice was calm, but he could hear the exhaustion beneath it.
"Tum jaanti ho kis baare mein."
This time, she turned to face him. "Nahi, Arjun. Ab mujhe sach mein nahi pata. Ek waqt tha jab mujhe lagta tha ki main samajhti hoon ki tum kya mehsoos karte ho. Magar ab? Ab mujhe bas ek cheez dikh rahi hai—ki tumhe farq nahi padta."
His grip on the wheel tightened. "Riya, aisa nahi hai—"
"Toh phir kya hai?" she interrupted, her voice sharp. "Tum mujhe batao, Arjun. Kya hai? Kyun mujhe dhoondhne ka natak kar rahe ho jab tumne khud mujhe door bhej diya?"
He had no answer.
Because deep down, he knew she was right.
She scoffed at his silence. "Bas. Yeh hi problem hai na? Tum hamesha chup rehte ho. Mujhe yaad hai, jab hum pehli baar mile the, tum mujhse kehte the ki emotions ek distraction hote hain. Main tab nahi maani thi, par shayad tum sahi the. Shayad… main hi galat thi jo socha ki tum kabhi mujhe apne kareeb aane doge."
Arjun’s heart clenched.
"Main tumhe apne kareeb laana chahta tha, Riya," he admitted in a low voice. "Par main tumhe wahi dukh nahi dena chahta tha jo maine saha hai."
She let out a bitter laugh. "Arjun Rawte, tumhe kya lagta hai? Ki tum mujhse door reh kar mujhe dukh se bacha rahe the?"
He looked at her then, his eyes dark with emotion.
"Riya, maine Roshni ko khoya hai. Main tumhe bhi nahi khona chahta."
Her breath hitched.
For a moment, she just stared at him.
Then, in a soft but firm voice, she spoke.
"Arjun… tumhe samajhna hoga ki main Roshni nahi hoon. Main Riya hoon. Aur main tumse pyar karti thi… karti hoon. Magar pyaar sirf ek insaan nahi chala sakta."
The words felt like a dagger to his chest.
"Aur agar tumhe ab bhi apna dukh hi apni duniya lagta hai, toh main aur intezaar nahi kar sakti."
Silence.
A silence so heavy that even the sound of the road outside seemed distant.
For the first time, Arjun realized—he had always thought pushing Riya away would protect her.
But in doing so, had he already lost her?
