Chapter 36 A

At Manushi's home..

Manushi was sitting on the couch n looking at a frame having her n Neha's pic of their college days.. She was remembering her college days..

~flashback~

St. Regents College, Youth festival 2010..

The last day of the youth festival n their friendship too..

The results of the beauty contest were announced, winner was Manushi, Neha had lost this time..

After the results, Manushi went to meet Neha..

Manushi - [concerned voice] Neha.. last round me kya hua?? tum perform karne kyu nahi aayi?

Neha - [angrily] ye tum mujhe kyu puch rahi ho? ye baat to tumhe acche se pata honi chahiye.. [after a pause] mujhe tumse ye umeed nahi thi Manushi.. me kabhi sapne me bhi nahi socha tha ki tum ek contest jeetne ke liye itna neeche gir sakti ho?

Manushi - tum kya keh rahi ho Neha??

Neha - tumhe kya laga tha.. tum mere saath kuch bhi karogi aur mujhe pata nahi chalega?? tumhe ye contest jeeta hi tha to mujhe keh deti.. me mera naam wapas le leti.. bas ek baar keh diya hota ki tum ye contest jeetna chahti thi..

Manushi - stop it Neha! rahi baat iss contest ki.. to meine bahot mehnat ki thi ise jeetne ke liye.. aur meine tumhe tough cometition bhi di ! isliye ye naam wapas lene ki baat mat karo.. ye contest meine apne dum pe jeeta he.. aage bhi jeetungi.. tumhari meherbaani nahi chahiye mujhe!

Neha - iss tarah cheating karke jeetne ko apne dum pe jeetna nahi kehte

Manushi - cheating?? kaisi cheating? meine koi cheating nahi ki.. tum kya kehna chahti ho saaf-saaf kaho.

Neha - oh.. to tum abhi bhi nahi samjhi? itni bhi bhola baane ki koshish mat karo.. tumhe kya lagta he mere makeup me chemicals daalogi aur mujhe nahi pata chalega ki ye sab tumne kiya he?

Manushi - tum kya keh rahi ho Neha? tum jeet nahi paayi to iska matlab ye nahi ki tum kuch bhi bologi.. aur tum mujh par itna ghatiya ilzaam kaise laga sakti ho?

Neha - ilzaam nahi laga rahi.. wo bata rahi hu jo sach he.. aaj tak bahot galat samjha tha tumhe.. lekin ab tumhari asliyat mere saamne aa gayi he.. meine kabhi nahi socha tha ki tum mere saath aisa karogi..

Manushi - meine aisa kuch bhi nahi kiya he..

Neha - kam se kam apni galti to maan lo Manushi

Manushi - meine koi galati nahi ki he.. me kyu tumse maafi maangu?

Neha - tumhe sachme aisa lagta he ki tumne kuch galat nahi kiya he?

Manushi - haan.. meine kuch galat nahi kiya

Neha - haan.. galati to meri he ki meine tumhe apne dost samjha.. lekin tum meri dost kehlane ke layak hi nahi ho.. tumhare jaisa dost to kisi dushman ki bhi nahi milna chahiye..

Manushi - tum itna over-react kyu kar rahi ho?

Neha - I'm not at all over-reacting.. mujhe aaj ke baad tumhari shakal bhi nahi dekhni..

Manushi - Neha.. [Neha goes away] are suno.. huff.. kitna jyada over-react kar rahi thi.. [sees a half empty bottle of whisky on table] hmm. sunegi bhi kyu? nashe me thi.. hosh me hoti to pata chalta ki kya bol rahi thi.. pehli baar kisi contest ko haari he.. shayad isiliye itna upset thi.. koi baat nahi.. kal jab baat karungi na to saara gussa shant ho jayega..

Next day she meets Neha again.. but Neha doesn't talk to her.. n says that she's not her friend anymore.. Manushi tried talking to her many times but Neha didn't heed her words.. soon the semester ended n Manushi went to Banglore for further studies n subsequently lost contact with Neha..

~flashback~

Evening..

ESS conference room

All were sitting n doing paper-works when Neha's phone buzzed.. she took the call

Neha - Salaam Walaikum lair sahab!

Ashfaq - Walaikum Asalaam! n DQ!! it's lawyer.. not lair!

Neha - haan.. jo bhi ho.. kya fark padta he.. kyuki Shakespeare ne kaha he.. What's in the name? For a rose will smell as sweet when called by any other name!

Ashfaq - hmm.. waise busy ho?

Neha - not much.. kyu?

Ashfaq - tumse kuch zaruri baat karni thi.. what about a dinner tonight?

Neha - ok.. at 9, our usual place

Ashfaq - 9?? won't that be late?

Neha - Ya Allah!!

Ashfaq - Allay Miya ko pareshaan mat karo.. mujhe karti ho wo kafi he..

Neha - ok.. 8:30 fine??

Ashfaq - hmm.. that's good.. have a good day!

Neha - no.. I don't like it.. Dark Fantasy is better!

Ashfaq doesn't say anything just disconnects the call..

8:30 p.m.

At a restaurant..

Neha n Ashfaq are sitting at a table in the corner

Neha - batao.. kya he wo "zaruri" baat?

Ashfaq - aaj mujhe Sharon mili thi [Sharon is their college friend]

Neha - oh.. to??

Ashfaq - tumhe yaad he uss din college youth fest me kya hua tha?

Neha - haan, wo me kabhi nahi bhul sakti..

~flashback~

St. Regents College, Youth festival 2010..

It was the final round of the beauty contest.. Neha n Manushi were the finalists.. this round was Dance round.. it had two levels.. first was a solo performance n second was finale face-off..

All were sure that this round would be won by Neha.. but something unexpected happened that day..

During the solo round, Manushi's performance was over.. it was Neha's turn now.. she was going to perform Kathak'.. as she was getting ready, she felt her palms itching.. she had applied red kumkum dots on her palm n feet.. n after completing the makeup she walked towards the stage.. there were applauses all around as she reached the stage..

Neha reached the middle of the stage n did a "Namaskar" before starting her dance.. She was not able to concentrate properly on the dance as her palms n feet were still itching.. as she started her performance.. there were whispers in the audience.. she didn't understand why.. little later as her performance was reaching it's end she started the spins.. first three spins were completed.. as she started the fourth one, her leg fell on something slippery n before she could understand n balance herself, she fell on the stage.. her ankle got sprained.. she was hardly able to get up.. the curtains were pulled n Anjali n Simran helped her to get back to the green room.. she then saw her face in the mirror.. her make-up had become more like a witch.. the eye-shadows turned dark violet, the blush turned into dark shades of maroon, lipstick was almost black n her hair-colour, it's brown high-lights turned into dark green! She herself was scared to look into mirror again..

Neha - ye sab kaise hua?? [she managed to speak after a while]

Anjali - jab tum dance kar rahi thi ussi waqt.. stage par hi hua

Neha changes into her normal clothes n removes the makeup n other decorations.. after washing her hands n face she sees that there is rednees on her face n her palm have blisters..

Just then Sharon came in..

Sharon - Anjali, Simran tum dono ko Ms. Roselyn bula rahi he

They both went..

Sharon - Neha.. yahi soch rahi ho na ki ye sab kaise hua? kisne kiya?

Neha - tumhe kaise..

Sharon - meri baat dhyan se suno.. me jaanti hu ke me jo kehne jaa rahi hu uss par tum bilkool bhi yakeen nahi karogi.. lekin me tumhe sach keh rahi hu.. ye sab Manushi ne kiya he

Neha - what nonsense Sharon?? [she yelled] how dare you say that? tumhe pata bhi he tum kya keh rahi ho aur kiske baare me?? nahi.. meri maanu aisa kuch nahi kar sakti.. wo aisa kabhi nahi karegi.. get that??

Sharon - me jaanti thi ki tum aisa hi kahogi.. lekin ye sach nahi he.. tumhare chehre par ye jo clour change huye he, tumhare haatho me bhi itching ho rahi he wo sab aise hi nahi ho rahe.. wo sab kuch chemical reactions ki wajah se ho rahe he..

Neha - so?? [still not believing]

Sharon - Neha.. tum bahot bholi ho.. kis par bhi bahot aasani se trust kar leti ho.. ye sab Manushi ne isliye kiya kyuki wo ye contest jeetna chati thi.. aur wo ye baat bahot acche se jaanti thi ki iss round me wo tumse nahi jeet sakti.. aur ye final round bhi tha.. to jeetne ke liye usne ye raasta apnaya

Neha - tumhe kya lagta he Sharon, tum mujhe ek bahot interesting si kahani sunaogi aur me uspar yakeen kar lungi?? nah.. bilkool nahi.. I don't trust even a single word that you say.. now better go away from here or I'll have to push you out..

Sharon - gussa mat karo Neha.. me janti hu ki tumhe abhi bhi meri bato pe yakeen nahi he.. abhi kuch der me results announce ho jayenge.. aur koun jeetega? Manushi.. Manushi Singhania.. your so called best friend!

soon the results are announced n Manushi wins..

Sharon - ab to tumhe meri baato par yakeen ho gaya na?

Neha - [yells] bilkool nahi! ab jao yahan se!

Sharon - waise mere paas ek saboot he ki ye sab Manushi ne kiya he..

Neha - kaisa saboot?

Sharon - mere saath chalo..

they go to the Chemistry lab

Neha - chemistry lab?? yahan par kyu??

Sharon - chalo.. abhi pata chal jayega..

Sharon shows the log book to Neha where Manushi was staying after classes n doing practise with some chemicals.

[note - at that time Manushi used to practise reactions for understanding their behavior on skin.. she was planning for forensic studies but she hadn't told it to Neha.. she wanted to give her a surprize once she's selected at the university..Sharon had got to know about it n took it's advantage.. she wanted to ruin their friendship as she was jealous of it]

Neha - so what?

Sharon - wait.. [she takes out a journal from the shelf n shows it to Neha]

Neha recognises that the handwriting belong to Manushi.. the reactions were of how different cosmetics when mixed with chemicals react.. there was a thesis written on it.

Neha - lekin isse ye saabit nahi hota ki ye Manushi ne kiya he

Sharon then tells some more things n convinces Neha that it was Manushi who had done it all..

Sharon - [with fake tears] ab me kya kahu Neha.. tumhe meine itna kuch bataya phir bhi tumhe meri baato pe yakeen nahi he? to phir ye theisi likne ki kya zarurat thi use? aur wo chemicals.. ye sab kuch pani ki tarah saaf he.. phir bhi tum use nahi dekh paa rahi.. kaisi jhoot ki patti bandhi he Manushi ne tumhari aankho pe.. sacchai tumhare saamne he phir bhi tum us par yakeen nahi kar rahi.. meri hi galati thi ki meine tumhe sach bataya.. nahi batana chahiye tha.. please mujhe maaf kar do..

Neha - Sharon.. stop crying.. maafi to use maangni chahiye jisne galat kiya he.. [determined voice] ab to jawab Manushi ko dene padenge.. wo mere saath aisa kaise kar sakti he??

Neha was upset.. firstly she'd lost the contest, secondly the whole college now made fun of her.. thirdly, it was her best friend who had cheated onto her..

~flashback~

Ashfaq shook Neha's hand n brought her back to reality..

Neha - aaj achanak uss baat ka zikr..kyu??

Ashfaq - wo aaj jab mein Sharon se mila to usne mujhe kuch bataya.. [he paused.. Neha waited for him to answer] wo jo kuch bhi tumhare saath hua wo sab Manushi ne nahi balki khud Sharon ne kiya tha..

Neha - [confused] tum kya kehna chahte ho?

Ashfaq - yahi ki tumhare makeup me chemicals Sharon ne daale the..

Neha - Sharon ne?? lekin kyu? aur phir usne mujhse jhoot kyu bola??

Ashfaq - jealousy! she was jealous of your friendship n wanted to ruin it.. she got a chance during the contest.. bas ussi ka fayda uthaya usne..

Neha - mujhe Sharon se milna he..

Ashfaq - khana khane ke baad chale ya abhi??

Neha - [looked at the food that lay before her] pehle pet puja phir kaam duja.. [saying so she started eating]

after the dinner they both went to Sharon's house

Neha - Sharon.. kya uss din contest me jo kuch bhi hua wo tumne kiya tha?

Sharon - [smiling wide] haan..meine hi kiya.. [before she could complete, Neha gave her a tight slap on her right cheek]

Neha - I curse myself for believing you.. [she wanted to hit Sharon but Ashfaq stopped her n took her out.. in car..]

Ashfaq - kya kar rahi thi tum??

Neha - [angrily] I wanted to kill her! that b*****y ****h!! uski wajah se meine apni best friend ko kho diya.. how could she??

Ashfaq - Neha.. calm down.. dekho.. gussa karne se koi faayda nahi he.. mujhe lagta he ki tumhe Manushi se maafi maangni chahiye..

Neha - [after thinking for a while] tum sahi keh rahe ho.. [she got down from the car]

Ashfaq - kahan jaa rahi ho?

Neha - bas do minit me aayi.. [she went to a liquor shop that she'd spotted.. that was the only thing that could calm her n she needed it the most right now]

Ashfaq sighed as he saw her going into the shop.. ye ladki nahi sudhregi..

Soon she came back with two whisky bottles.. n settled on the co-driver seat.. she opened one bottle n passed it towards Ashfaq..

Ashfaq - [almost yelled] you know I don't drink!

Neha - toh.. gussa kyu hote ho.. mujhe pata he.. but sharing na.. tumhe nahi chahiye to well n good..

She drank that whole bottle as her drove towards her home.. continued her blabbering about her friendship n stuff.. n also half-finished the second bottle.. Ashfaq tried stopping her but in vain..
