CHAPTER 1:

A beautiful simple yet elegant bookstore. Plain floor with lights hanging in a row. White stairs and black bookcase. Books were arranged in a good manner.

Sakshi was dusting the store before opening. It's her daily routine. She likes to keep her store neat and clean. Yes it is Sakshi's store. Her uncle used to run it while alive. But last year he died leaving the store to her. She loves it with every fiber of her heart. She loves books and the smell of it. She loves to read and get lost in the world of books. After finished dusting she was arranging the books when the bell rang. A wide grin stretched in her face. She knew who would come at this early even after seeing the closed sign. She turned around. Yap. She was right. There stood ACP Arjun Rawte in his formal dress. It's another part of her routine. Or their routine. Every day before and after office Arjun will come here. Will spend some time with her. Someday Sakshi will read for him.

All this started a few months ago. Arjun was never a book worm. After Roshni's death he became more introverts. One day while passing the shop attracted him. It had something in it. His feet carried at their own accord.

Sakshi was preparing to close the shop when he entered. He was looking here and there. Seeing his lost state Sakshi decided to help him out.

Sakshi: Hello sir. Aap kya lena pasand karenge? Aapko kiss type ki books pasand hai?

Arjun shook his shoulder helplessly.

Arjun: Nothing. I just came to wander a bit. Nothing else.

He turned to go but Sakshi held him by hand. He turned around surprisingly.

Sakshi: Agar aahi gye to kuch lekar hi jye.

She made him seat forcefully and handed a book to him.

Sakshi: Yeh lijye. Free mein de rahi hoom. Agar accha lage to phir ayega.

Arjun: But I don't want to read any book.

Sakshi: Aise kaise? Books ko koi na kehta hai kya?

Arjun was about to get up when Sakshi made him seat again.

Sakshi: Okay. Aaj main apko padke sunati hoom. Ek ghanta time to aap mujhe de hi sakte hai na? Just one hour?

As Arjun had no other work to do he just shrugged.

Sakshi switched off all the lights only leaving one lamp. It didn't clear the darkness but gave it a shadowy look. Sakshi had read that book so many times that she could read it out from her memory. She put out Arjun's shoe. Then she started.

Sakshi: Close your eyes relax.

Arjun did as she said. She started again.

Sakshi: Can you feel the soft touch of grass beneath your feet?

As he was barefoot somehow Sakshi's magical word made him feel that.

Sakshi: Take deep breath. Can you smell the rich fragrance of pine? And various birds chirping.

Slowly by slowly she took him to the world of the book. Sometime he hid behind the trees with Frodo and watched the elves singing. Or sometime he enjoyed the carnival while Frodo danced and sing with his friends.

He enjoyed every bit of it. While one hour ended and Sakshi switched the lights on. He was still in a trance. When he recovered himself he saw Sakshi smiling at him. He had to smile back. After Roshni's death that was his first smile.

Arjun: It was just magical. You are a very gifted reader.

Sakshi bowed.

Sakshi: That I am. To aab kya?

Arjun: I want to purchase this book.

Sakshi: Mhm. I told you it's free. Bad mein dunga wohsab kharidna. Filhal yeh meri tarafse ek tofa samajhke rakh lijye.

Next morning when Sakshi was working Arjun came in with a sheepish smile. Sakshi wiggled her eyebrow while he shrugged. Then tentatively he placed a wind chime on the window of the store.

She had to smile. That's how they met and became friends. Arjun shared his painful past with her. Somehow it felt right. Though Sakshi's past is totally a mystery to him. He just knew that her parents died while she was a kid and brought up by her uncle. She never told and he never asked. Though she talks a lot about her friend cum sister Shree aka Shretama. Shretama Bosh. She is also an orphan like her. They used to live together. Arjun saw her a few times and take a instant liking towards her. Tall, slim figure with slight wavy mid back hair and big doe shaped eyes. Full pouty lips and a little sensitive. Have a charming aura around her.

They smiled seeing each other.

Sakshi: Kya bat hai ACP sahab? Nya book chahye?

Arjun: Nehi Sakshi aaj neh.

Sakshi: Wah wah. You are saying no to a book? DO you know what a big crime you are committing?

Arjun laughed out loud.

Arjun: Aaj wake nehi le sakti. Ek nya case aya hai. Bohoti tough case hai. Jabtak isse solve nehi kar leti mujhe chain nehi milega.

A singsong voice spoke up from behind. It was Shree.

Shree: Did I hear right? A new case?

Arjun turned around to see an excited Shree running to them. She came to them sat on a stool comfortably.

Shree: Aab bolo. Mujhe na yeh sab mysterious cases bohot pasand hai.

Arjun laughed out loud.

Arjun: Sorry mam. Nehi bata sakta. Case confidential hai.

Sakshi: Yeh to batao ki case kya hai?

Arjun: Pechle kuch mahino se ek ajeeb serial killer aya hai. Yeh abt to tumlogoko pata hi hai. Wahi jo chun chunke sare corrupted logoko marta hai. Aajtak ussne six murders kya hai. Wohbhi unlogoke ghar me jakar. But koi nehi janta ki woh kon hai, kaisi dikhti hai ya kaha rehti hai. Recently oata chala hai ki woh ek ladki hai. Ussi case ko Com. sir ne hame soupa hai.
