The cremation was shorter than he had expected. There was not much of a pooja at his parental home, he had already told Sakshi once that they weren't religious, at least not after his dad's brutal death. If there had been a god his dad's murderer would've been caught, but he hadn't.
The only time he had gone to a mandir on his own will after his dads death was on the day she had a bomb attached to her. That was the first time he had prayed to whatever deity was out there to save his miss Publicist. And when she had survived he had gone to the mandir to attend the evening pooja and give food and blankets to the poor. He was still amazed that in all these years he had been cursing and had even stopped believing in God, and then when he saw her there bound to that bomb, not being able to do anything to save her he just had to speak with the One up there again.
One life had broken his faith and another reinstalled it.

Sakshi had been by Arjuns side the whole day. She also didn't have any other choice, he had clamped her hand in his. She hadn't said anything, she knew that Arjun needed her right now. No matter how calm he looked on the outside, his deathgrip on her hand let her know that he was just barely keeping it together. She couldn't let him break down in front of everyone, he was the pillar of strength in his family and she was the one who was holding that pillar upright. Not by doing something special, just by being there. Even when his grip on her hand would hurt she didn't show. He needed her, and she couldn't let him feel guilty by showing her small hurt.
He held her hand as people walked past to offer their condolences, she wanted to move away then, it wasn't her place to stand there beside him after all, but when she tried he just tightened his grip even more.
When they returned home Arohi had eaten and gone to her bed, the two of them sat at the table, her hand still in his. He hadn't eaten anything all day.
"Arjun, kuchh kha lo, tumne subah se kuchh nahi khaya hai, and it wouldn't help Arohi any better if you ended up in the hospital."
He just looked at her sadly, "Hmm, khane ka mann nahi karraha Sakshi, lekin mujhe pata hai ke I will be of more help if I have my strength. So thoda sa dedo."
She gave him a small smile, then looked at their hands, "Arjun, agar tum mera haath chhodo ge, to hi main khana leke aaungi. I promise ke mere haath ko kuchh nahi hoga, it will be back in yours in no time." She was talking at him like she was talking to a child, slowly and soflty. Not like the 6ft. Tall cop he was. This made him laugh, the first laugh in three days.
He continued to chuckle as she went and readied a plate of dinner for him. When she came back to the table he again held her hand in his and ate with the free hand.
Sakshi had to smile at him, "Waise Arjun, mujhe mera haath tum sahi salamat toh lauta do ge na? Warna main kaam kaise karungi?" she said teasing him a bit.
"Sakshi, abhi itna to main jaan gaya hoon ke tum apna kaam aankhein band karke bhi karsakti ho, you aren't the best crime reporter for nothing miss Publicist." after a pause he continued "Thanks Sakshi, mere saath aane ke liye."
"Arjun, you know ke main humesha tumhare saath hoon, waise mujhe nahipata tha ke mere saath se zyada tumhe mera haath pyara hoga." she said with that trademark smile of hers.

It had been an hour after dinner, Arjun and Sakshi had been busy with cleaning up a bit. When they were finally done they collapsed on the sofa. Arjun saw Sakshi massaging the sole of her feet. He took her feet in his lap and sat back again. Sakshi was about to protest, but then his fingers started working their magic. Whatever she was going to say got stuck in her throat as her muscles relaxed.
"Hmmm Arjun, that feels good!" she said as she closed her eyes for a few seconds. Arjun smiled at her antics. When Sakshi again opened her eyes she saw an old picture of Arjun with a cricketbat in his hands. "Awww! Yeh tum ho na?" she said smiling, "Hmm achha ACP, tum to bachpan se hi killer the, look at that smirk. And your hair, tab bhi sambhal nahi paate the, they are going in every direction."
"Hey missy! Aise baat karte hain apne senior se?" he asked her and as a 'punishment' started to tickle her feet. She laughed out loud and tried to get her feet away from him. But he wouldn't let her.
"Ohhh mujhe tumhari aur pics dekhni hai Arjunnn!" she demanded. She was the only one who never asked him anything, she demanded it as if she had all right on all that was his. And the worst thing was, he didn't mind, to see that smile on her face he'd do anything.
Arjun stood up and went to the closet, he was rummaging through it, looking fir the albums.
"Waise abhi tum yeh na sochna ke tumhe koi ugly picture dikhne ko milegi, unlike some people main humesha hi handsome tha."
"Haan haan, ACP, tumhe to bhagwan ne fursat mein banaya tha na. Zyada bakbak na karro, aur jaldi se mujhe dikhaooo!"
"Main dhoond raha hoon, lagta hai ma ne pictures kahi aur rakhi hai. Maaa! Aapne albums kahan..." his words instantly stopped when the happeningsof the last three days flew past his eyes again.
He dropped onto his knees, a scream of despair came from his mouth. It was the most heartwrenching sound Sakshi had ever heard. She quickly rushed to his side.
"ShhhShhh Arjun," she stood behind him, not sure how to help her friend. She wanted to pull him into a hug, take over all his pain and sorrows, but she didn't know how to. So she just put a hand on his shoulders and went to stand next to him. The moment she stood infront of him he pulled his arms around her and put his face on her middle.
He started crying uncontrollably " She isn't here anymore, Sakshi woh abh kabhi waapas nahi aayegi."
Seeing him in pain was hurting Sakshi badly as well. She put her hands around him amd tried to comfort him through her touch.
Sakshi started speaking in a soft and calm voice, trying to pull him away from the dark place he was in. "I know Arjun, aur main chahte hue bhi tumhara dard kam nahi karsakti. Kaash main tumhe yeh keh sakti ki waqt ke saath saath yeh dard kam hoga. But that would've been a lie. It's been years since my family died, and I still miss them every single day. Dad toh hain, lekin you can't say ke woh sahi mayne mein zinda hai. But I promise you one thing though, you will learn to smile at her memory. You will remember all the good times you spent with her. And jitna main aunty ko jaanti hoon there will be a lot of happy memories of her."
It seemed as if her words were calming him, he had quieted now and he'd stopped wailing. She tried to pull him with her to the sofa, but he didn't budge and she fell back against him. He kept a strong hold on her, and when she realised he wouldn't move she slowly slid down to sit on her knees in front of him. "Main tumhare liye kya karsakti hoon Arjun, just say it. I want to help you out." Saksho asked, she needed to know how to make him feel better, how to heal him. He was looking intently at the side, pondering over her words, suddenly he looked at her, and before she knew it her mouth was captured by his. Sakshi didn't know why she closed her eyes the moment they touched, or why she was filled with a pleasure. As they broke apart she tried to reason with him."Arjun, I know that this isn't what you want, I understand that halaat ki wajah se.."
"No Sakshi, I need you... Please" he was begging, his hands had shifted from her back to her face during their kiss, and his thumb was stroking her cheek. "Main bas thodi der ke liye bhoolna chahta hoon."
Sakshi was stuck in a dilemma, should she put a risk on her relationship with Vishal to help her best friend? Perhaps her only true friend? Arjun could sense the dilemma she was in, and said "Please, it would be just this one time. I won't tell anyone else. We can pretend it never happened." saying so he pulled her in for another kiss, it was filled with a desperation and urgency that Sakshi couldn't do anything except to melt into him. As she did so Arjun pushed her and himself on the ground.
It was clear to the both of them that this wasn't going to be lovemaking, it was something more primal. They did love each other, but that had taken a backseat to fulfil a whole other need. When Arjun hiked her yellow kurti over her head, she wasn't surprised. She wasn't shocked or angry when he pulled down her jeans and tore the panties because they didn't come off fast enough. It was the moment when their bodies touched that she gave a reaction. She arched her back, crying out in pain and surprise. Arjun was moving frantically, not concerned about her (dis)comfort, nor of the fact that the cold floor was hurting her back. Sakshi knew that he would stop if she told him to, but she also knew what he needed, and she didn't know how he would react if he was denied.
The feeling of ecstasy hit her, it was sooner than she had ever felt it before. With Vishaal she had many times not even reached this feeling. So it wasn't a surprise when she gasped in shock as it hit her. She held on to him as she was trying to keep quiet. Silent screams leaving her mouth. Arjun reached his own climax not much later, he took her lips with his, trying to drown out the scream of ecstasy leaving him. He laid atop her for a few seconds, spent. Then he rolled away, and laid on his back next to her. They were both trying to get their breathing under control and weren't looking at each other. Slowly Sakshi sat and tried to put on her kurti again.
She looked over at him and could see that he was feeling guilty now, he wasn't looking at her, his eyes were closed as if trying to undo the happenings of the past few minutes. Trying to get rid of the sudden tension in the air she said: "I get to shower first! Fir main sohne jaa rahi hoon, kal jaldi uthna bhi to hai. Aur tum bhi fir jaldi se naha ke soh jaana Arjun, kal bahut kaam karna hai, aur humari flight bhi raat ko hai."
Arjun nodded absent mindedly, still thinkingof what had just happened between them. He was thankful for the way Sakshi was trying to make him feel comfortable, acting as if he hadn't just taken advantage of their friendship. He was feeling guilty, and he grabbed her hand as she was going to stand up.
"Sakshi," he started, she turned to him, but didn't look in his eyes, her long black hair was infront of her face.
"I liked it, aur tum?"
"Haan, main bhi." he whispered.
"Fir isko zyada overthink na karo Arjun, just don't." saying so she stood up and went upstairs. Arjun was left sitting on the cold floor, cursing himself for using his friend in a manner so unlike him. He was once again left hoping and praying that their friendship wouldn't be hampered because of his stupidity. But he knew he had crossed that line. He had to stop himself from running behind her and take her to his bed, show him what she truly meant to him. He knew that it wasn't a possibility, she was in a relationship, he couldn't jeopardize her happiness for a few more moments spent with her.

Arjun and Sakshi had gone to the mandir before leaving for the airport, they had packed all of mrs Rawtes belongings early in the morning, and Arohi had also gone to her home by noon. They had decided to keep the house, it held to many memories for the brother and sister to sell it, so Arjun had decided that he would give it to Arohi when she got married, he knew he wouldn't be able to live there.
During the night and even today all Arjun could think about was what had happened between Sakshi and him last night. And even they both had pretended as it hadn't happened. Hell if he hadn't seen her nail marks on his back he himself would've believed that nothing had happened last night.

He had gone to her room, initially to apologize, but then when he saw her his desire was once again awakened. She had seen it as well and she had to stop herself from giving in, she knew nothing would happen between them, Arjun was not ready for a relationship, and she couldn't cheat on Vishaal once again. She was already feeling guilty. If they did it now, it wouldn't just be her trying to take away his pain, they would make love, and she couldn't risk her heart to be broken. Because if they made love he would find out her true feelings for him. She felt lucky to have his presence in her life. So she had made it clear that they could never ever do that again. When she told him that he hadn't objected, nor had he told her that he loved her, or asked her to end things with Vishaal and that he wanted to be by her side forever. He had just nodded in understanding and left. The moment he closed the door she sank to the floor crying. It wasn't as if he was doing any better, he sank on the other side of the door, trying to control himself from crying. He couldn't give her what she wanted. And he knew she deserved someone who would stay with her.

As they entered the mandir Arjun slowed a bit, he hadn't been here since his dad died. Sakshi watched him cautiously from the corner of her eyes, there were tears in his eyes.
"Mujhe unki bahut yad aati hai Sakshi." he said while once again taking her hand in his.
"Aur tumhe humesha ayegi Arjun, lekin abh yeh tum pe depend karta hai ke tum uss yad ko kaise handle karoge, either it will be a happy memory, or the sad ones." she squeezed his hand, while thinking of her own family.
"Thanks ke tum mere saath aayi." he said turning to her. She could sense him looking at her, but she kept her gaze straight ahead on the murti infront of them.
"Abhi dosti ki hai, toh nibhani padhegi na ACP. Aur I know ke agar mujhe kabhi bhi tumhari zarurat padhegi, tum bhi mere liye yeh karoge. Lekin abh humein chalna chahiye. Time ho raha hai." nodding Arjun bowed down and they turned around to leave.
He gave Sakshi a small hug, making her react in a way she knew was not good for either of them. She refused to ever think like that again, she knew that if she went on that road the only thing that she would get would be heartache. So she hid her desires once again inside a small cornerof her heart.
Arjun took her with him down the stairs of the mandir and they went to the taxi waiting for them. While they were on their way to the airport both were left thinking how they could go back to life as they knew it? Would they be able to pull of the faade? Will they be able to live with the memories of this one night together?

Authors note: I am thinking of ending it here... Not hundred percent sure though, so don't be surprised if I add another part or so to this one..
