The clock had just struck 9. Sameer had already left. Aisha, Chotu and Shree were getting ready to call it a day while discussing in hushed tones about the morning's happenings.
Chotu: Kahin jayadad ka chakkar toh nahi hai unke beech?
Aisha: Nahi...jo bhi hai bohot personal hai...pehli baar Arjun sir ko dekh kar laga ki voh bhi ek insaan hain...jo mehsoos kar sakta hai...
Shree: Haan yaar. varna hamesha toh patthar jaise lagte hain. aur unki aankhon mein toh aansu bhi aagaye the...lekin ek baat samajh nahi aayi...yeh Rathore sir ko achanak kya ho gaya?
Chotu: Pehle toh theek the. Par jab Arjun sir ne bataya ki Akansha ji unki behen hain..toh maano unhe saanp soongh gaya. mera matlab hai ki rathore sir toh Akansha ji ko jaante bhi nahi hain toh fir...
Aisha: Akansha ko bhale hi na jaante ho lekin ho sakta hasi ki Arjun sir ki behen ko jaante ho.
Chotu: mujhe kuch samajh mein nahi aaya..
Shree: Chotu...tu 11:30 vaali se dimaag hatayega toh samjhega na...Arjun sir aur rathore sir batchmates hain...dono ne saath-saath training ki hai...toh ho sakta hai ki Arjun zsir ne ya kisi aur ne kabhi unka zikr kiya ho...aur achanak unhe yahaan dekh kar vo kuch zyada hi surprise ho gaye ho...
Chotu: Ho sakta hai rathore sir ko Akansha ji se bina mile hi unse pyaar ho gaya ho aur isiliye unhone aaj tak shaadi nahi ki aur aaj unhe dekh kar...
He stopped abruptly. The look on his face was of pure horror. Even Aisha's face echoed similar sentiments...
Shree: Kya hua? Bhoot dekh liya kya tum dono ne?
Chotu gulped down in fear and whispered while looking straight ahead "usse bhi bura Shree...hum marne vaale hain"
Shree: Matlab?
Aisha turned him around slowly. Arjun was glaring at them murderously. Now it was Shree's turn to be shocked.
"Tum logon ko ghar nahi jaana?" he asked them sternly.
The trio mumbled something and started to leave.
"Aisha, Chotu tum log jao. Shree tum ruko. Mijhe tumse kuch baat karni hai." Arjun said before proceeding to his cabin.
"Shree tujhe kon se phool pasand hain?teri arthi pe main vahi chadaunga. Aur teri chita ke liye aam ki lakdi mangvaau ya koi aur?" Chotu asked him mournfully.
"Chotu, tu kyu aisi baatein kar raha hai? Unhone mujhe keval baat karne ko bulaya hai…ek minute…sirf baat karne ko hi bulaaya hai na..kahi unhone hamari baatein toh…" Shree turned to Aisha with a horrified look.
"Tum dono pagal ho gaye ho. Kisi case ki report ke liye bulaya hoga…bekaar mein kyu bechara ko dara rahe ho Chotu?" Aisha said trying to suppress a smile. "accha hum dono nikalte hain…kal milenge Shree..goodnight…"
"All the best Shree…ummeed hai ki hum kal mil payenge…" Chotu said dramatically.
"Chotu…" Aisha and Shree said in unison.
IN ARJUN'S CABIN:
Arjun knew Akansha wouldn't back down this time. She was quite stubborn that way. Another similarity between them. He knew that sooner or later the past would come knocking at their doors and before that he needed to be sure whether or not his assumptions were right.
Shree saw Arjun twirling the pen, lost in some deep thoughts, his back towards the door. Gathering his courage and praying to all the known and unknown Gods he spoke in a small voice, "sir may I come in?"
Shree's hesitant voice broke his chain of thoughts.
"Take a seat Shree."
Shree sat down…waiting for him to say something. He looked menacing. A few minutes passed in silence…
Deciding to start the conversation, he said, "sir aapko kuch baat…"
"Haan..." Arjun now faced him. "You're the best tech expert I know. Aur isiliye tumse ek favour chahta hun…"
Arjun was hard pressed to control a chuckle when he saw Shree's startled and flushed face.
"Really?" Shree gaped at him incredulously. After all being praised by the hot-headed cop was a once in a blue moon phenomenon. "aapko…mujhse…mujhse favour chahiye?"
"Haan. Par iss baar mein kisi ko pata nahi chalna chahiye."
Arjun was trying hard to sound stern but Shree's shell shocked face was reminding him of his own school days…when he too had stared at his coach in bewilderment on being made the captain of the cricket team…
"Voh bhi kya din the…" Arjun voiced out…
"Koun se din sir? Kis din ka pata lagana hai mujhe? Sir aap bas din ka naam batayie main sab pata kar dunga…sir aap bol ke toh dekhiye…" Shree said in one breath…
"Relax Shree…get a grip…agar tum iss tarah kaam karoge toh mujhe kisi aur ko.."
"Sorry sir..voh aaj pehli baar aapne meri taarif kin a toh bas thoda…" Shree mumbled embarrassed at his stupidity…
"Its ok Shree.." Arjun gave him a number and said "mujhe iss number aur iske owner ke baare mein saari information chahiye…badi se badi aur choti se choti detail…sab kuch…samjhe tum? Kuch chootna nahi chahiye…"
"Kab tak chahiye sir?" Shree asked him..staring at the paper
" Jald se jald…" the urgency was evident in his voice…
"Kisi case ke liye hai sir?"
Arjun glared at him for a moment and said "Nahi"
There was a finality in his tone that told Shree it was time to leave…Arjun's secretive ways of working were not new to him but today he'd seen an unvoiced fear lurking in Arjun's eyes. He knew it was something serious. And he knew that he would come to know when the time was right. Right now he had work to do. Still thinking about the possible reasons for Arjun's request, he left.

The ETF building was completely deserted except for him. His cabin was dark except for the pale moonlight from the glass windows overlooking the sea. He was gazing wistfully at the stars. The clock had just struck ten.
The door creaked open and the sound of footsteps broke the silence as someone entered.
"Tum yahaan kya kar rahi ho?" he asked, slightly annoyed. He wasn't very fond of trespassers.
"Tumhe sach mein nahi pata?" she remarked sarcastically, gazing at his dark silhouette outlined against the moonlit sky.
"Tum yahan kya kar rahi ho?" he repeated his question.
"Kuch adhuri baatein poori karne aayi hun."
"Main tumse pehle bhi keh chukka hun ki uss baare mein ab koi baat nahi karna chahta…fir tum kyu baar baar…" his voice was still mellow but sounded more like a warning.
"Arjun…" she softly called out to him.
No reply.
"Arjun…." She again called him, this time a bit louder.
Again no reply.
"Aakhir kab tak bhagoge tum Akansha se?" her voice held compassion and concern.
"Jab tak zaroori hai." He replied firmly.
"Tumhe bhale hi lagta ho ki is sab se Akansha ka bhala ho raha hai, par aisa nahi hai. Usse sach batana hoga. Tumhe andaza bhi hai vo kitna guilty feel karti hai? Kabhi uski aankhon mein vo dard dekha hai? Kaise dekha hoga? Tumme toh usse nazrein milane ki bhi himmat nahi hai."
She paused to give him an opportunity to say something. When he didn't, she continued.
"Jitna zada hum use andhere mein rakhenge, utna hi uske aur Muskaan ke liye khatra badhta jayega. Aaj nahi toh kal use pata chal hi jayega ki hum uske khilaaf sabot ikatthe kar rahe ho, aur tab voh un dono ko tumhaare khilaaf hathiyaar ki tarah istemaal karega. Aur tab chahe tum kitni hi koshish kar lo, Akansha ka saamna sach se ho hi jayega. Tut jayegi voh jab usse realize hoga ki uske bhai ne usse jhooth bola, usse ek aise gunaah ke pashchataap I aag mein jalne diya jo usne kiya hi nahi. Jis bhai se vo aaj itna pyaar karti hai, usi bhai se tabl voh nafrat karegi. Bolo Arjun? Seh paoge uski nafrat?"
Her eyes glistened with unshed tears which sparkled like diamonds in the moonlight.
"Maanta hun ki jot rum keh rahi ho vo sab sahi hai. Par agar hamne usse sach bataya aur gusse mein voh koi bevakufi kar baithi…toh? Abhi humare paas koi sabot bhi nahi hai. Agar is vakt usse hamari investigation ki bhanak bhi lag gayi toh Muskaan aur Akansha ki jaan ko toh khatra hoga hi, saath hi saath hum sikandar tak pahuchne ka aakhri mauka bhi kho denge. Main yeh risk nahi le sakta.
" ACP Arjun 'Samjhe Ya Samjhaun' Raute ko risks se kab se dar lagne laga?" she mocked him.
On a more serious note, she added, " abhi toh bas shuruvaat hai Arjun. Agar koi galti abhi hoti bhi hai toh usse sudharne ke kayi mauke milenge humein. Par aage chalkar ek choti si galti bhi bohot bhari pad sakti hai. Hum abhi risk le sakte hain. Baad mein nahi. Aur yeh bhi toh socho,
Akansha hamari is mission mein kitni help kar sakti hai. Jis machli ko hum pakadna chahte hain, uske liye Akansha se behtar jaal koi ho hi nahi sakta."
Her eyes gleamed with hope and excitement as she said this. In the moonlight, Arjun could see a faraway look on her face. She had already started planning along those lines.
"Are you sure akansha ko is sab mein involve karna…I mean its too dangerous. Aur phir Muskaan…uski safety bhi toh ensure karni hogi." Arjun still didn't sound convinced.
"Arjun main tumhe force nahi kar rahi hun. Aaj nahi toh kal usse involve hona hi padega. It is inevitable. Tumhaari behen hai toh final decision tumhaara hi hoga. I just want you to think about this once coolly. I know yeh tumhaare liye bohot bada decision hai. So take your time."
She said this very soothingly so as not to pressurize him too much. She could understand his dilemma. After all Akansha was his only family. She could comprehend how difficult it was for him.
"Par agar koi gadbad…." Uncertainty was evident from his tone.
"100% foolproof toh koi plan nahi hota Arjun. Even the best laid plans can go astray. Risk is a part of our job profile. Main bas yeh keh rahi hun ki jo baat ek na ek din honi hi hai, usse postpone karne se kya fayada? Kyu na usse prepone karke apne favour mein use kiya jaya? In short main tumse ek teer se do shikaar karke mouke pe choka maarne ko keh rahi hun. Vaise bhi, Akansha deserves the truth. She needs the truth."
She smiled reassuringly.
"Fine. I'll think about it…" he sighed a deep sigh.
"Arjun…zada stress lene ki zaroorat nahi hai. Okay…please take care of yourself." Her care was evident in her eyes.
With this she turned to leave. She was at the door when Arjun spoke in a soft voice, "Thanks…"
"Ismein thanks kaisa? Aakhir dost hote kisliye hain?"
She winked at him and with the mischievous twinkle still in her eyes, she left.
Arjun went back to his star gazing. He heard the clock strike twelve. Midnight. But sleep was far from his eyes. He had a lot to ponder over. Thanks to Aisha.
