The whole team was too baffled to understand what exactly was going on. It seemed to be a scene straight out of a bollywood movie. Arjun and Akansha were involved in a high speed volley of arguments and all that the others could do was stare at their faces as though the duo had sprouted extra heads.
"Arjun bas ek baar meri baat sun lo'" Akansha was pleading him.
"Just leave'" came Arjun's curt replays he turned away from her.
"Arjun please'." Akansha's voice broke and her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
"Raute what's wrong with you? Aakhir baat kya hai?" Rathore intervened, clearly exasperated and perplexed. He couldn't help but sympathize'no'empathize with the woman before him.
"Stay out of this Rathore'Yeh mera aur meri behen ka personal matter hai. Tumhe interfere karne ka koi hak nahi hai'"
The words had left his mouth before he could understand their consequences. While the rest of the team looked dumbfounded, Sameer looked stricken.
"Ye'tumhaari behen Akansha hai'.yeh vahi hai'.?" Rathore's words resounded hollowly in a room which was silent except for Akansha's stifled sobs'
Arjun nodded slightly. When he finally met Sameer's piercing gaze, he saw his fears confirmed. Sameer Rathore wasn't a man to forget and forgive easily'Arjun had realised this truth of this statement in the past two years. He saw his expressions change with an alarming rapidity. Confusion' denial' realization' hurt' shock' and finally bitterness and anger.
While others mistook it as anger directed towards Arjun for his impertinence'Arjun and Akansha knew better' They were both aware that this sudden anger was a result of the resurfacing of old wounds which had been hidden but not healed. Arjun's mind wandered back to the dawn which had caused the night in their lives but he also knew he couldn't afford this journey down the memory lane under the present circumstances'He could see Sameer trying hard to keep his cool.
He turned towards Akansha whose eyes wore a scared and questioning look and spoke in a mellow voice "Jao yahan se'baat karne se ab koi fayada nahi hai'aura b baat karne ke liye kuch hai bhi nahi."
Akansha knew what Arjun was trying to tell her- now is not the best time to rummage through the skeletons in the closet but she also knew that no other time would be better. Sameer's reaction to her dramatic introduction had weakened her resolve for a moment'Yes, she was shaken'but certainly not stirred.
"Baat karne se hi baat banti hai Arjun. Its never too late to make amends. Thak chuki hun main Arjun'ab aur bardasht nahi kar sakti. Please'ek mauka de do mujhe apni baat kehne ka'tum itne patthar dil kaise ho sakte ho?"
Arjun didn't reply'he didn't trust himself enough to pull it off without his voice trembling. He could feel his faade of being 'patthar dil' and indifferent crumbling and it was essential that Akansha shouldn't realize this. Staying away from him was of utmost importance for her and Muskaan's safety. He couldn't falter. He had already forgiven her as he knew that she wasn't responsible for any of it. When something is meant to be, it finds a way. Perhaps the turbulence in their lives was meant to be'maybe it was their fate'their destiny'he couldn't blame her for that. The only person to be blamed was himself.
He knew he couldn't explain that to Rathore'he wouldn't understand'he couldn't explain Akansha' understanding it would hurt her more than anything else'and he didn't want to explain things to himself for each time he tried to do so, he ended up crying bucketful of tears and feeling vulnerable'yes that's why he hated it'because it made him feel. And this made him realize once again why Life sucks'at least his life did. He He knew he was hurting the sister who meant so much to him, punishing her for a crime she didn't commit. But if breaking her heart meant keeping her and Muskaan out of harm's way, he would break her heart a million times and more. So what if this pretense filled him with self-loathing, so what if every harsh word he threw her way hurt him like a thousand devils, so what if he ached to see Muskaan, so what if the pain was going beyond his endurance'? That's what Rakhi is all about. His pain didn't matter'but their lives did. The vow of a brother to protect his sister till his last breath'and Arjun was determined not to break it.
With a sigh, he left the room. Akansha followed him with the rest of the ETF team behind her. All except Rathore.
Aisha was almost at the door when she turned back only to see Sameer flop down on the chair with a pained expression'his shoulders slumped in defeat. Aisha's eyes welled up at his broken form. She had seen the change in his expressions when Arjun had informed them that Akansha was his sister and now this.
Walking upto him, she asked in a soft, concerned voice, "sir aap thik toh hain? Is something wrong?"
"Its hard to tell what's wrong when nothing's right."
She was still trying to figure out whether the remark was addressed to her or to himself when his voice snapped her out of her reverie.
"Log kehte hain jin baton ko yaad karke dukh ho, unhe bhul jaana hi behtar hai. Par apno ka diya hua dhoka koi kaise bhul sakta hai? Kaise koi ateet ki karwahat ko ek pal mein itni asani se bhul sakta hai? Koi apne dil ko itna kamzor kaise kar sakta hai?"
"Sir, ek pal mein kuch nahi hota. Vakt lagta hai par haan vakt har zakhm bhar deta hai'line filmy hai par sach hai. Aur ek baat kahoon sir? Forgetting and forgiving the pain inflicted by someone doesn't mean you are weak'it just means that you are strong enough to let go. Difficult hai'impossible nahi."
She waited for him to say something. When he didn't she continued "life is too short to hold grudges against those who matter. I've learnt this lesson the hard way. I hope you'll realize this truth before its too late."
Wiping the lone tear that had trickled down her cheek, she turned to leave. At the door she said, "I'll make sure nobody disturbs you."
Leaving Sameer in the company of his thoughts, she left to witness the battle going on in the lobby downstairs. Both the siblings were holding their ground with an obstinate stubbornness. The fireworks had begun.
AN APARTMENT IN DELHI:
A girl in her late twenties was sitting by the window of her flat, drenched in pale moonlight, pouring her heart out to her best friend.
Dear Diary,
I met him today and he is still the same- very very handsome. Girls still swoon over him, though he's married. I had this urge to go and shake him like a cat shakes a rat and tell him what an ass he is but I couldn't. You know why, don't you? I'm still not over him. Its amazing how someone can shatter your heart and trample all over it and you still those little pieces refuse to move on. I don't love him. I'm sure of that. Yet I can't forget him. Honestly I'm not sure if I should just keep holding on or let go. Its stupid to hold on to something that's hurting you but its also stupid to let go of everything you've always wanted. I can't go on like this. This is driving me crazy. So I'm applying for a transfer.
My life's a mess. The past offers no solace and the future is shrouded by the mists of ambiguity. So the only option with me is to try and mould the present into what I hope and think is for the best.
The story is the same everywhere- from hell to heaven. The plot maybe different but the climax is essentially the same- Second chances awaiting you on the other side of midnight. But when even the best laid plans are jeopardized and still somehow you manage to sail through, that's what you'd like to call a miracle. But, they say its destiny'
Goodnight!
Love,
Poornima.
