SYNOPSIS

"Anandam" – is the story of life. That when all's well, it ends well.

The patriarch of this story – Mr.Radhakrishnan is an industrialist. His life essentially revolves around his wife Rajeswari and his four children.

Madhan is his eldest son. Well settled and comfortably well off, he stays with his parents and wife Abirami. Abirami is the heartbeat of the family. She is an archetypal daughter-in-law who tries to stay in control.

Karthick is Radhakrishnan's second son and the main protagonist of "Anandam". He is the army man, away from home and also the most eligible bachelor in town.

Abirami, the daughter-in-law hopes to get him married to her younger sister Ramya.

Two daughters complete this picture perfect family. Anita is daddy's pet and goes about with an attitude that stings. Swathi is Miss Goody Two Shoes. Anita and Swathi are both ready to tie the knot and the father is busy looking out for eligible grooms.

Karthick's visit is eagerly awaited and the family is overjoyed when they hear from him. The entire family prepares for Karthick and even decides to get him engaged to Ramya.

Their joy though is short lived. Karthick comes home as a married man with his wife Shanthi and a 3 year old daughter.

The family is shattered and finds it difficult to accept the new daughter-in-law. More so, when they learn that she is a war widow and her marriage to Karthick is all of three month old.

Shanthi's entry into the household upsets the congenial bonding that exists in the house and the family puts her through great humiliation.

She is harassed by Abirami and her sister Ramya who treat her like an intruder and scheme together to show her in poor light.

Shanthi smiles through all this even though she hurts for their love, affection and ultimately their acceptance. Upset at their behavior, Karthick decides to give up his army life and help Shanthi.

Karthick's sudden marriage also upsets all the marriage plans for Anita and Swathi. Radhakrishnan hence decides to marry them off to the offspring's of his immediate kin.

Dinesh, their paternal aunt's son is a businessman and rogue. But he is rich and hence ideal for Anita.

Arjun, their maternal aunt's son is an ordinary supervisor in a factory. But Swathi decides to marry him.

Even as the family gets ready to get the daughters married, Anita decides against Dinesh whom she feels is a little too roguish for her liking. By a strange twist of fate, the grooms are reversed and the girls get married.

Poor Shanthi is blamed for all the confusion, even as she helps Anita settle down to wedded bliss and guides Swathi through a rocky marital life.

How Shanthi weaves herself into the family with her good nature and gets accepted by the entire family and how she changes their life positively forms the crux of this story.

This serial depicts war on many levels.

On one level, there's the actual war, with soldiers battling for peace.

On the other level, there's Shanthi, fighting for her identity.

On the third level, there's the family that is fighting to come to terms with the changes that surround their otherwise predictable life.

But like all wars, this one also comes to an end and alters the equation to a life lived happily ever after.

There's only Anandam at the end

Oh, so Laxman has some terminal illness or something. I saw the episode where they had the inaugral function - i was wondering why Uma and Laxman were not there.

So now Shyam will get married to Uma, then? And Shanti will sign as witness in their marriage registration :-)

When I saw the nurse handing over the medical report to RK, I had the same thoughts that you wrote about. A non medical person may do such things inadvertantly but a nurse casually giving some one else's report--looks ridiculous.

Sudha, I think you have not followed the recent episodes.

Shyam/Uma want to marry but Abi/Srini want to bring in a new girl (Chitra) and get her married to Shyam so as to keep shyam away from RK/Shanti group.

The story was at a standstill recently and they had to go the extent of getting Rohini suffering from Abirami ghost attacks! Now with this new threat to Uma, the story may revive.

I am a week behind.. in Singapore they show us old episodes - we just saw the inaugral function yesterday.

But, I meant that now that Abhirami is going to pressurise Shyam to marry this new girl,
Shyam might get a jolt and take the necessary steps to seal his romance.

Cos as far as I know, from all the suda suda updates, they haven't exactly said "i love you' to each other.

So now that this new girl is in the picture, it might be a catalyst for them to profess their love for each other and get married. And our dear Shanti will engineer the whole logistics of getting married.

Regarding the medical report.. india mein chalta hai :-) honest, medical privacy and confidentiality are not a big deal in our country.

Isn't one of the first question one asks (at least in our mom dad's generation) 'where does your son / daughter work and what salary do they draw?'

I have heard parents boasting to each other that their offspring is earning 'rendu laksham' per month in US... they do the necessary calculations - divide annual salary by 12 and multiply by 42 or so to get this figure.

Update for Fri Mar 10-2006

Lakshmanan's house

Lakshmanan meets his lawyer and gives him his property papers and asks
him to make preparation for transfer to his daughter's name. Uma
watches the scene with consternation and asks him why are u doing all
this. He replies that he wants to do certain things when he is in good
health and as Uma is his only daughter, he wants to do it now.. Uma is
very worried . The lawyer says he will make the draft copy and show to
him and then they can finalise.

After the lawyer leaves, Uma asks him the same questions but he does
not answer. Now RK comes in and says big people will not think about
themselves. RK says Lakshman advised him like that in Bangalore but
now he has forgotten himself about that. He now tells lakshshman that
you have forgotten not only that but also your medical report.
Lakshman gets shaken and uma says she does not understand what is
going on and goes to bring coffee. RK tells him he considered him very
close and why he did not tell him this matter. Lakshman requests him
to keep this confidential, specially to Uma.

RK's house

RK comes home and looks very worried. Raji comes and gives him milk
but he does not take it and returns it to her talking philosophically
about friends. Raji tells herself that RK looks very confused now and
nothing bad shd happen to him.

Abi's house

Abirami looking at Chitra's pics and Shyam comes in and abi tells him
about the girl – from Canada, doing BBA, come for 40 days only -- .
Shyam asks why are u telling all this. She says for your marriage. She
further says you just see the girl and then we will see later. she
gives a photo to him saying their address is at the back of the photo.

Chitra's house

Chitra with her parents. They have bought some handicrafts and mother
says she is impressed with the heritage here and says even the thaali
is to bought here only. Chitra laughs and tells that you are going too
far ahead.
Now door bell rings and chitra opens the door. First she sees shyam
and her face becomes very radiant and joyous. Shyam also smiles at
her. Next she looks at the person standing next to shyam and chitra's
smile disappears on seeing uma. Shyam asks for coming in and they enter.
shyam tells them that uma is his business partner. He says his sister
did not tell him before thinking abt this alliance. He says his focus
is only on his business and he does not want to get married at least
now. He says pl excuse me. Chitra's mom says she is highly impressed
with his transparent talk and says shyam's mother must be a lucky
person for having such a son. she says for such a person like shyam,
they can wait for him. Shyam says when u talk to my sister, please
talk diplomatically about this, I don't want her to be hurt.
(Bit strange why Shyam gives them hope for waiting. Also, Uma does not
show much reaction when Shyam talks like this.)

Gani/IG

Gani called into Police HQ and IG tells him that apart from meeting
prisoners in jail and giving aid to their families, the enquiry found
Gani to be a honest officer and so he is reinstated. Also he is told
that the enquiry against him will continue.

Shanti

Indu waiting for narayanan to take her to go to school. She is getting
impatient as Narayan is delayed. Shanti is trying to pacify her.
Now Karthick comes in his car and greets indu lovingly and tells her
indirectly that narayan is delayed due to a problem in the car and so
he has come. Indu gets in the car and he leaves.
while leaving indu says bye and he also says bye leaving shanty surprised.

Shyam's actions are weird.. Uma has not even spoken to SHyam about her dad's actions. May be they are just good friends?

This Karthik and Shanti romance is irritating. Why cant' they just start over?

Karthik and Shanthi are soo ill-suited for each other ...I don't understand why everyone is trying to get them together. Almost like saying a divorced woman can't find a life except with her ex...too irritating!😡

I hope the serial ends with Shanthi & Karthik being friends but moving on in their lives...but that will be asking for some realism in this serial!! 😆

Agree here with your comments Sudhashri.. Shanti and Karthik are really getting on my nerves now... Time to wind up this serial and move on. I keep thinking every week that Anandham will head to a close but they seem to be introducing new characters (e.g this Chitra girl)... What exactly is the point??
