Shruti Haasan witnesses father Kamal Haasan’s Rajya Sabha oath, pens heartfelt note: 'Forever etched in heart'

Veteran actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan formally entered national politics on Friday as he took oath as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. His oath was delivered in Tamil, marking his debut in the upper house of Parliament.

Haasan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha with the support of the DMK-led alliance. The nomination had been assured as part of a political understanding during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where MNM extended its support to the alliance. With this move, Kamal Haasan transitions from state-level political involvement to a national role.

His daughter, actor and singer Shruti Haasan, was present in Delhi to witness the occasion. She later shared a personal note on Instagram expressing her thoughts about the moment.

Today marks the journey of your steps into a brave new world. Watching you take your oath in the Rajya Sabha with your signature voice echoing through the chambers with strength and gravitas was a moment forever etched in my mind. As always I wish for you to be happy and achieve all you hope to achieve. Love always always.

Kamal Haasan founded the MNM in 2018 and has since participated in state and general elections, including contesting from Coimbatore South in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where he narrowly lost. The Rajya Sabha seat offers Haasan an opportunity to represent his views and party at the national level, adding a new chapter to his political career.

His entry into Parliament comes at a time when MNM continues to seek space in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The Rajya Sabha role is seen as a step toward building a stronger national presence for the party and expanding its reach beyond electoral alliances.

With his oath now complete, Kamal Haasan begins his official tenure as a Rajya Sabha MP from Tamil Nadu.
