Alia Bhatt in Rekha's vintage saree look at Umrao Jaan event is the perfect Gen-Z remix of the timeless

At the special screening of Umrao Jaan, Alia Bhatt turned heads by wearing a soft pink saree reminiscent of Rekha’s unforgettable look from Silsila (1981). The nod to the veteran actor’s style was unmistakable and, according to many, well-executed.

Styled by Rhea Kapoor, Alia paired her saree with feather earrings and subtle, dewy makeup. Her hair was left open, adding a gentle touch to the ensemble. While the look stood out on its own, its roots in cinematic nostalgia made it all the more significant.

Alia’s tribute wasn't accidental. Stylist Rhea Kapoor shared reference pictures of Rekha’s look from Silsila on her Instagram Stories, pointing out the clear fashion connection. Fashion observer Diet Sabya also weighed in on the homage. Posting a side-by-side image, the caption read, “Rekha ma in Silsila has given us fashion and heartbreak refs for ages… The only way to pay homage is to do it correctly or not do it at all. The original look, now widely considered one of Rekha’s most iconic, was from Yash Chopra’s Silsila, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. Rekha’s portrayal of Chandni and her elegant wardrobe contributed to the film’s cult following.

Interestingly, the Umrao Jaan screening itself carried deep significance. The classic film, which will re-release in theatres this Friday, has been restored by the National Film Development Corporation-National Film Archive of India. It is part of the National Film Heritage Mission. Set in 19th-century Lucknow, Umrao Jaan traces the journey of Amiran, who becomes a courtesan. Rekha’s role, paired with performances by Farooque Shaikh, Raj Babbar, and Naseeruddin Shah, remains etched in Indian cinematic history.

As fans await Umrao Jaan’s return to the big screen, Alia’s tribute brought together fashion, nostalgia, and cinematic respect in one graceful moment.
