Priyanka Chopra praises Rekha’s timeless performance after missing 4K theatrical re-release of 'Umrao Jaan'

Rekha’s Umrao Jaan has returned to theatres in a digitally restored 4K format, bringing back the poetic grace and enduring power of the 1981 classic for a whole new generation. Though she couldn’t attend the special screening, actor Priyanka Chopra took to social media to express her admiration and affection for the film and Rekha’s iconic role.

On June 22, Priyanka posted a clip from the film on her Instagram Stories, adding an emotional note: “Sad not to be there to support my favourite movie and actors. It will be a legendary night. Congratulations Re ma'am.” Her message struck a nostalgic chord with many fans who remember the timeless impact of Umrao Jaan. The restored version of Umrao Jaan is part of a project supported by the National Film Development Corporation and the National Film Archive of India, under the National Film Heritage Mission. The restoration is not just a technical upgrade—it is a celebration of cinematic history, preserving one of India’s most emotionally resonant films for future audiences.

Directed by Muzaffar Ali, the film tells the tragic yet lyrical story of Amiran, a young girl sold to a brothel, who later becomes the celebrated courtesan and poetess Umrao Jaan. Rekha’s hauntingly graceful performance earned her a National Award for Best Actress and remains one of the most cherished roles in Indian cinema. Commenting on the film’s timeless relevance, director Muzaffar Ali said, “Almost three generations have revered this as an heirloom and legacy of their emotional evolution.
