wonderful analysis aunty. honestly aunty, srry for lamenting, but most of the attentions was given to jodha-moti relationships & also most of the discussions, but jalal-abdul relationship was not less. its sad tht this character was vanished later on. i really wanted to see jodha, later of course, remembering how jalal risked his life for his friend despite he was said heartless. honestly, this would have been a beautiful angle later on to change jodha's perceptions about jalal but unfortunately, tht didnt happen.

ZEE Anmol should give you a part of the profits it is getting from the deluge of ads during the show. Part of the fun of watching a repeat show is reading an analysis of it and who can do it better than you.
As for the episode- You described that horse scene beautifully. Abdul is such an interesting character and the person emoting it is good, very good. He has that casual, care free style of acting which blurs the line between acting and reality.

As for Rajat, once again he was brilliant. He looked and acted like an Emperor. Just shows what he is capable of if given the chance. But where he will get the opportunity to portray such strong negative and positive roles in the same show. Let us hope he does.

The Jodha Surjamal bond was another of things which was portrayed beautifully. One has to admire Ekta's casting, such good choices for all the main character. So, what was she thinking when she picked Salim.

I really look forward to your analysis, hope it continues for a few months, covers the best times of JA.

Shyamala, your post 3 and 4 have been a joy to read. Not just for the description of the episode but the strength of your writing skills and the profound way you express all the emotions involved in each and every scene.
Your section on " Deemagi Taaqat ki Hadein" was brilliant ! I loved the way you have decribed the difference between Bairam Khan and Akbar...simply loved it!

Your section on "Tez Dimaag aur Shaatir Wafadaari" was another Gem. You did full justice to the bond between Akbar and Abdul. I am not supposed to lament I know, but really the writers should have found a way to retain this character.

PS .I second Khushi on the Jalal and the woman incident. Hated Jalal for that. Nothing justifies that crude behavior much less from an Emperor. Although boy was Rajat's expressions brilliant! The picture Munni irony posted of how he looks at her from the back was !!!!

Dear Shyamala aunty,
Thank you so much for including me in your list of regular readers and your PMs. I joined the JA club quite late, from episode 150 to be exact, as I was then in Mumbai at my mother's place and it was a family ritual there. -:) Then of course it was Rajat who kept me on board.

I remember not when and how I came across your posts but was hooked from the very first one I read. I have been a silent reader, all this time, of your posts and the discussions that followed. I know the rest of the regulars as intimately as I would have had I joined the discussions. I hope they will not mind this too much if they ever come to know about it. (This was supposed to be a PM but since this is my first post, I could not send it as a PM so now they will know 😃)
Two things have prevented my participation, my aversion to being on social media and forums and the fear of addiction to the company! I am a bit relaxed about the first now and have also realised that the latter has already set in. 😃

Currently too busy with assignments to rewatch JA and to let go of the last inhibitions and post on the threads. Yet, I could not stop myself from liking your posts and from replying to this PM. I simply could not 'not acknowledge' it when I know how painful the whole process is for you given the condition of your knee! I do hope the knee gets better soon.

Warmest Regards
Ashwinee

My dear Ela,

I am doing this past midnight, for I wanted to write to you before you got on to Episode 4. And thanks ever so much for liking this post such a lot.

Yes, I agree with you about Jalal and that unfortunate female, who was really pretty, was she not? He never had any intention of forcing himself on her, that was never his nature, though, as he tells her, if she had come willingly, he would have taken her to his hoojra.

But on the whole, her role in the matter was somewhat incidental. She was simply a means to an end, which was to humiliate her husband, and see when and how he would break. And the man obliges Jalal big time! If he had said Mohabbat, kyonki meri mohabbat ke bina yeh zindagi koyi maine nahin rakti , I wonder what Jalal would have done. Killed him? I think not, for then the whole experiment would have failed. But I suppose he would have been even more furious, since the mohabbat he despises would have won!

As for the baby's father, Ela, it need not be khushamad, It is a purely feudal set up, and it is absolutely normal for a dependent to bring a new-born baby to be blessed by the lord and master, and very often named as well. There is usually a rich gift for the baby, which would be very welcome!

Shyamala no need to say how wonderful you have been...About Jallu and that pretty woman scene , I liked one thing..Jallu did not force himself on that woman, which he could easily have, not even for pride's sake..This also shows that somewhere deep in him a gentleman exists..who has not yet fully raised his head...

I too was upset by the method of BK sending those chudis to Salima..but was not that father foolish who brought his infant to be blessed by the like of BK...He had to pay the price of doing Khushamad to BK..

My dear Rashmi,

I have always felt disappointed that you post so rarely, but when you do, you do it exceedingly well. I had no idea you had such a sense of humour, of the kind that matches mine. the Dabur Keshkala crack in priceless!👏 If not Dabur Keshkala, Dabur Lal Tail surely used to sponsor Jodha Akbar at one point whereupon I used to joke that the number oil massages of Jalal's head had shot up!😉

Then there is the apt description of the early Jalal as being like a Chitale Bandhus' baakarwadi. I am now a Puneite, though not yet a Puneikar, and I know exactly what you mean! Very, very neat.

See, I had almost forgotten Pinaaz Begum. She too was a loss, though a minor one as compared to Abdul.

Do keep writing, my dear, I enjoyed this one so!

Yup ,even I was confused by the tag line of "payal ki jhanakar and talwar ki dhaar." As this one suits Bajirao Mastani's lovestory a bit more.
And that soldier's such a long description of Amer ki shehezadi was funny enough as if he was Amer's PR agent than a Mughal soldier .
And yes Jalal in initial episodes was like our Pune's "Chitale's bakarwadi" ,spicy but irresistible. And Jo too was sweet .
One thing if you notice is that ,HB had white streak in her hair initially ,which disappeared completely after Jo's entry .Maybe Dabur keshkala started sponsoring later on.
And how we miss Abdul .I even missed Pinaaz begum as she too disappeared suddenly .She would have added some spice in harem drama as she never shared good vibes with Ruku .😉
Again ,it was my pleasure reading your takes again and will look forward for more.

I will, Alakh, whenever I can. I did a couple of posts there some months back, responding to Kaana, but that was it. In those days, it was full of orthodox historians lamenting the extent of natakiya rupantar and then doing long posts on what they called actual history without giving the sources, which quite put me off. Maybe it is better now!

I loved all these comments, Sandhya my pet, but since I agree with all of them in toto , I do not need to add anything to what you have said. Except to admire your takes on Bhagwan Das and the comparison with Jodha in Agra later, and the magisterial one on the Anyaypriya Ameradipati.

As for

👏. This is why we beg/demand/plead for your write ups aunty. You can put in words so eloquently what we feel and struggle to express.

I know why that is there, you wicked child!😉 Jokes apart, I will do everything I can, but the situation is as I had described to you earlier, except that I had forgotten to mention the twice daily physiotherapy sessions and the ice packs afterwards! Still, I will try.

No, my dear Khushi, I do not think it was mere bullying, If that was so, he would have exercised his droit de seigneur, and the willingness of the woman never entered into that. It is aimed at humiliation pure and simple. It looked ugly, but it is neither lasciviousness, nor a brute exercise of force for its own sake.

But he might have also wanted to show his Khan Baba how well he had imbibed his lessons.

The woman, incidentally was really pretty, was she not? Jalal never had any intention of forcing himself on her, that was never his nature, though, as he tells her, if she had come willingly, he would have taken her to his hoojra.

But on the whole, as I wrote to Ela above, her role in the matter was somewhat incidental.

The worst sufferer in all this was that poor woman. I am sure her spouse will cook up some story about her having tried to attract the Shahenshah and being allegedly rejected, to cover up his cowardice, and he will not take her back. She would not want to go back to such a wretch, but what choice would she have had in those days?

As for your expression of disgust about Bharmal being the same as mine, maybe we are a wee but telepathic!

I wouldn't term it as experimenting, Sands...its more like being a bully...it was very evident that he was trying to score brownie points from his Khan Baba...this behaviour is basically against Jalal's inherent nature...

How did I miss this one, Preeti, or did I not? I am so confused, with the responses to my daily posts leaving me with a growing backlog that I am not sure at all! Anyhow, here goes.

I agree completely with you about Abdul and the old Motibai; my post on Episode 4 would have delighted you! Abdul was there till the burning of Jodha's portrait by Tabassum, and I do not remember having seen him afterwards. Maybe he fell ill or had an accident and they could not find an adequate substitute.

As for Mynavati, I cannot understand how they chose her. In the film, they had the seasoned Suhasini Mulay, who also played Aamir's mother in Lagaan and Shahrukh's in Asoka. What a hat-trick!

Awesome post on episode 2 dear Shyamala. Your post brought back fond memories of some wonderful and some not so wonderful side characters of this show

Bairam Khan: got the chills when listening to him and Akbar. Brilliant Actor!

I too miss dear Abdul sooo much. Why on earth did he disappear? Did something happen to him in the show or did the actor just leave. My memory fails me but I don't seem to remember Abdul's exit from the show.
And I really miss the old Moti Bai as much as I miss Abdul. She was a perfect compliment to Jodha. As the new Moti Bai became worse with every episode, I couldn't help but long for the old one.

And what shall I say about our dearest Shaguni Bai and her doomsday prophesies 😆

One character that deserved her sudden exit ( or perhaps she could have left sooner) was dear old Maasa- Mynavati. 😕
