My dear Lavanya,

Thanks for my daily dose of morale booster!

Now as for your two questions, Sandhya has given you excellent answers to both. I would not quite compare Bairam Khan's downfall to Raavana's, for the latter was a giant of a man in most ways, whereas Bairam Khan had a narrow, tunnel vision that could look only at the expansion of the Mughal empire on the basis of fear and force. He never had the vision needed for the consolidation phase, or even the wisdom to understand that unless there was a consolidation phase, one part or the other of the empire he strove to build would be trying to break away in open rebellions that could never be put out completely, which would affect not just the political but also the economic health of the empire.

Bairam Khan started thinking of himself as the all knowing eminence grise, a Grey Eminence like Cardinal Richelieu to the French King Louis XIII. As he tells Salima, his loyalty was not to the Shahenshah but to the Mughal sultanat. He still considered Jalal a wayward young warrior who could win battles but not plan either tactics or strategy without being spoonfed by his Khan Baba. Whence his instructions to Jalal not to move on Amer till he said so (which Jalal circumvented by moving single-handedly on Amer!).

Bairam Khan never thought of Maham Anga as a real rival till the very end, but only as a jumped up, upstart daayimaa. So he was not afraid of her. What infuriated him was that Jalal had countermanded him publicly and, at least in one instance, taken charge of the Takhatmal case himself. His raging to Salima later, about Jalal's ingratitude, shows that.

It is what the Greeks call hubris, overweening pride, that led to his downfall thru this case, and in that way, Raja Takhatmal had his revenge after all!

As for Jodha and Sujamal, I would go with Sandhya's take on it. After the Kali Maa mandir incident, which is what really triggered this Jalal ka sar business, Sujamal was too taken up with his own problems, and Jodha would not have had the heart to burden him with this demand. And a day later he was gone. Whence the sad fate of Suryabhan, who lost his sar to no purpose, poor chap!

THANKS FOR THE PM AUNTY

AND YET AGAIN, A BRILLIANT ANALYSIS

I TOO ENJOYED THE SCENE BETWEEN ABDUL AND JALAL. THEIR BOND IS ONE OF A KIND, WHERE JALAL IS ABLE TO LET DOWN HIS GUARD, ALBEIT A LITTLE BIT, WHILE WITH ABDUL, AND COMES CLOSEST TO BEING THE PERSON THAT HE IS. HOWEVER, AS YOU HAVE SAID IN THE PAST, DUE TO THE FEELINGS OF NEGLECT IN THE PAST, JALAL IS NEVER ABLE TO ACTUALLY BE THAT PERSON IN TOTO

ABDUL, ON THE OTHER HAND, HAS PRESUMABLY NEVER NURTURED FEELINGS OF NEGLECT, AND SHOWERS HIS AFFECTIONS ON JALAL WITH RECKLESS ABANDON. HIS CHILD LIKE ENTHUSIASM TO SEE JALAL'S WISHES GET FULFILLED IN THE BACKGROUND OF HIS UNWAVERING LOYALTY, IS ALL A PLEASURE TO SEE. HIS CONFIDENCE ON HIS FRIEND, HIS SHAHENSHAH, ACTUALLY BREAKS ALL BARRIERS AND BECOMES OVER CONFIDENCE - A BIT RECKLESS, BUT IT SURE KEEPS US VIEWERS COMPLETELY ENTHRALLED

BOTH OF THEM TOGETHER REALLY MAKE THE SCREEN COME ALIVE. AND SINCE I AM NEW RO TEAE EPISODES, I GET TO SEE A JALAL I HAVE NEVER SEEN

ANYWAYS, AFTER READING TODAY'S ANALYSIS, I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS THAT I WOULD LIKE YOU TO ANSWER AND IT IS ABOUT THE FALL FROM GRACE OF KHAN BABA. I VAGUELY KNOW THAT IT WAS PARTLY COZ OF HIS OWN ACTIONS, PARTLY COZ OF SAAZISH BY MAHAM ANGA AND PARTLY COZ OF JALAL GROWING UP OR GROWING OUT OF HIS SHADOW.

BUT KHAN BABA WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN SETTING UP THE EMPIRE AFTER HUMAYUN'S DEATH. HE NEITHER LACKED TE BRAINS NOR THE BRAWN. WHY THEN DID HE ALLOW HIMSELF TO FALL FROM GRACE THUS? HOW DID HE NOT SEE THE LIKES OF MAHAM USURPING HIS POSITION?

SECOND ONE IS WHEN THERE IS SUCH A STRONG BOND BETWEEN SUJAMAL AND JODHA, THEN WHY DOES EVER NOT THINK OF HIM AS A SUITABLE CONTENDER TO GET HER THE COVETED JALAL KA SAR? WHY IS SHE LOOKING FOR A SUITOR TO DO THE HONORS? SHE ADORES HIM, AND FEELS HE IS THE CONSUMMATE YODDHA,BUT YET NEVER OCE URGES HIM TO DO TE NEEDFUL. WHY?

My pet,

No one thanks another for showing them such truths. They hate them.

As for the woman, I doubt if her husband would believe that Jalal let her go untouched, and he would be like the dhobi in the Ramayan, most likely. Under those circumstances, the woman would have more vital things to think about than the hollowness of her husband's mohabbat. Like where to go now. One has to get real!

If her husband ditching her doesn't matter, if it doesn't matter to her if her husband's love was true or pretense, she would be perfectly happy to go back to him. He would be happy to take her back explaining his ditching her as a momentary act out of fear and they can live happily ever after.

If she is sensitive to people's intentions as much as actions then she should thank Jalal for showing her the truth. For all practical purposes she can go back to her husband but she will always be cautious and know where exactly she stands according to him.

Sandhya, this is not Ibsen's world, this is rural 16th century Rajasthan. For all that her husband babbles about mohabbat, all this concept of love is alien to that kind of traditional environment.

Thanking Jalal? For what? For leaving her high and dry with nowhere to go, very likely? That woman was happy and secure just being married and respectable. Now all that is gone with the wind, poor thing.

My dear Devki,

Thanks a lot for liking this one, my dear.

As usual very neat and plausible, all your comments.

I loved your crack about Mainavati's single-minded focus on getting Jodha married, of course all because of Shaguni Bai's cowries! And I too disliked the way Bhagwan Das behaved.

As for Bairam Khan, it is not just that he is so active in court, he is dominating. Worse, he shows publicly that it is he who is in charge. For all his achievements in rebuilding the Mughal empire, he would have been cashiered long ago but for Jalal's deep loyalty to him.

Thanks for another great analysis Aunty!

Jalal-Abdul: The relationship between these two is just too adorable. He does not mince words or sugarcoat them. That is what Jalal likes and respects about him. Poor Jalal, Abdul is probaby the only "friend" he has. I like how Abdul always has this amused smirk on his face. The actor playing him is good and cute too.😊
Did you notice how he just irritably shoved Zaheer's hand aside as the latter tried to prevent him from going near Jalal?

The issue with BK's KS and Sharifuddin is on similar lines. As long as BK plays such an active role in court, no one is going to take Jalal seriously. They all think that he still a little boy who needs hand holding.

Jodha-Sujamal: I loved the way their relationship has been shown. All their scenes have so much love and warmth. Right before he walked out of the sabha he turns around and looks up to where Jodha is with sadness and then turns right back with a look of anger and disgust towards Bhagwandas. Both Jo and Suj are emotional and passionate, no wonder they understand each other. But Suj is hotheaded too so that will be get him in trouble.

Bharmal and Bhagwandas: I was disappointed with both today. Bharmal: for the reasons you've already written. Bhagwandas: for the discreet nod he gives Sangram Singh to get rid of Suj.😡

Sisterly Bonding: I have to put in a few words about the sweet bond that the three sisters share. Just love their bickering and teasing. Maybe because I don't have a sister of my own😭

What I found hilarious: Mainawati's obsession about Jo's marriage.😆😆 Sujamal gaya toh gaya, Jodha ki shaadi ka kya??? I like it! Never lose sight of your goal, come what may👍🏼

Thank you, Munni.I am glad you liked this one.

As for the track, or rather line you have suggested, that would have been a wonderful, and also plausible one. Maybe the first lot of CVs would have thought of it. But it would have been lost in the exodus of the 92. A pity!

wonderful analysis aunty. honestly aunty, srry for lamenting, but most of the attentions was given to jodha-moti relationships & also most of the discussions, but jalal-abdul relationship was not less. its sad tht this character was vanished later on. i really wanted to see jodha, later of course, remembering how jalal risked his life for his friend despite he was said heartless. honestly, this would have been a beautiful angle later on to change jodha's perceptions about jalal but unfortunately, tht didnt happen.

Now that, my dear Donjas, is one delightful idea! Not that it has any chance of coming true, alas.

I am very glad that you are enjoying these posts as much as I am enjoying writing them. As Zee Anmol is showing Jodha Akbar on Saturdays as well, you and I will have a break of only one day to catch our breaths!

Yes, I plan to do daily analyses at least up Episode 150, which will take 25 weeks at least! But I am shutting down the other thread about Rajat, of which I had done 6 parts, for now, as I cannot possibly do both.

And yes, I too am very puzzled about her choice for Salim. It was a disaster. Did you notice that they did not even get him back for the last week?

ZEE Anmol should give you a part of the profits it is getting from the deluge of ads during the show. Part of the fun of watching a repeat show is reading an analysis of it and who can do it better than you.

As for the episode- You described that horse scene beautifully. Abdul is such an interesting character and the person emoting it is good, very good. He has that casual, care free style of acting which blurs the line between acting and reality.

As for Rajat, once again he was brilliant. He looked and acted like an Emperor. Just shows what he is capable of if given the chance. But where he will get the opportunity to portray such strong negative and positive roles in the same show. Let us hope he does.

The Jodha Surjamal bond was another of things which was portrayed beautifully. One has to admire Ekta's casting, such good choices for all the main character. So, what was she thinking when she picked Salim.

I really look forward to your analysis, hope it continues for a few months, covers the best times of JA.

My dear Preeti,

Your taste is unerring. Those were the parts I particularly enjoyed writing, especially the latter. Abdul and Jalal together are an unalloyed delight.

Do also see my response to Lavanya above about the reasons for Bairam Khan's downfall. In the light of the closing scene in Episode 5, this assumes greater relevance. Bairam Khan is very proud of the Jalal whom he sees as his creation, like a sculptor admiring his own work. But the real Jalal is not a finished statue but a work in progress, and when he shakes off his leading strings, Bairam Khan not just disapproves of him, he no longer loves him. Whence the break that had to come.

As for the woman in the street, do see my rather lengthy exchanges with Khushi and Sandhya on the last 2 pages!

Shyamala, your post 3 and 4 have been a joy to read. Not just for the description of the episode but the strength of your writing skills and the profound way you express all the emotions involved in each and every scene.

Your section on " Deemagi Taaqat ki Hadein" was brilliant ! I loved the way you have decribed the difference between Bairam Khan and Akbar...simply loved it!

Your section on "Tez Dimaag aur Shaatir Wafadaari" was another Gem. You did full justice to the bond between Akbar and Abdul. I am not supposed to lament I know, but really the writers should have found a way to retain this character.

PS .I second Khushi on the Jalal and the woman incident. Hated Jalal for that. Nothing justifies that crude behavior much less from an Emperor. Although boy was Rajat's expressions brilliant! The picture Munni irony posted of how he looks at her from the back was !!!!

My dear Ashwinee,

I am delighted that you broke your maunvrat after all and decided to post on this thread. I hope you will continue to do so, and will also be able to spare 21 minutes a day to watch the rerun so that my posts make more sense to you. There is also a 3 hour omnibus on Sundays, I see.

Do try, for it will be fun, both for you and for us, and me in particular.

Thank you so much for your concern about my knee. It is progressing, but so slowly that it is like watching the grass grow! Still, I hope to get it to normalcy in another 3 months or so. What scares me is that the left knee too is beginning to hurt. Well, I shall cross that bridge when I come to it!

Take care, my dear, and God bless.

Dear Shyamala aunty,

Thank you so much for including me in your list of regular readers and your PMs. I joined the JA club quite late, from episode 150 to be exact, as I was then in Mumbai at my mother's place and it was a family ritual there. -:) Then of course it was Rajat who kept me on board.

I remember not when and how I came across your posts but was hooked from the very first one I read. I have been a silent reader, all this time, of your posts and the discussions that followed. I know the rest of the regulars as intimately as I would have had I joined the discussions. I hope they will not mind this too much if they ever come to know about it. (This was supposed to be a PM but since this is my first post, I could not send it as a PM so now they will know 😃)
Two things have prevented my participation, my aversion to being on social media and forums and the fear of addiction to the company! I am a bit relaxed about the first now and have also realised that the latter has already set in. 😃

Currently too busy with assignments to rewatch JA and to let go of the last inhibitions and post on the threads. Yet, I could not stop myself from liking your posts and from replying to this PM. I simply could not 'not acknowledge' it when I know how painful the whole process is for you given the condition of your knee! I do hope the knee gets better soon.

Warmest Regards
Ashwinee

My dear Ela, and Sabdabhala,

I agree with you completely. One more thing, so see my rather lengthy exchanges with Khushi and Sandhya on this topic, on the two pages above. Also my response to your original post, on

And Lavanya, Jalal does not reject the woman because she is not good enough for him, but because she does not come to him willingly.Do also see my responses to Sandhya and Khushi on the prepages. They will be of interest to you.

WELL, TRUE TO OM PURI'S RAMBLINGS, JALAL DID EVEN WORSE - HE CREATED A DISMAL SITUATION FOR HER

ON ONE SIDE SHE HAD TO WITNESS HER HUSBAND, WHO FORSAKED HER AS SOON AS JALAL GAVE HIM A CHOICE BETWEEN HER AND HIS LIFE

AND ON THE OTHER HE REJECTED HER, THEREBY SAYING THAT SHE, FOR SOME REASON, WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR HIM EITHER
SHE COULD, AT LEAST, PRESERVED SOME OF HER DIGNITY AND RESPECT IF HE HAD FORCED HIMSELF ON HER, BLAMING JALAL AND THE FATES

NOW SHE IS NOT LEFT WITH THAT OPTION EITHER

Shyamala no need to say how wonderful you have been...About Jallu and that pretty woman scene , I liked one thing..Jallu did not force himself on that woman, which he could easily have, not even for pride's sake..This also shows that somewhere deep in him a gentleman exists..who has not yet fully raised his head...
I too was upset by the method of BK sending those chudis to Salima..but was not that father foolish who brought his infant to be blessed by the like of BK...He had to pay the price of doing Khushamad to BK..

I saw a segment about Majhi in one of the Satyameva Jayate programmes 2 years ago. Of course Majhi's love was greater, for he did what he did with his own hands.
