Chapter 29

Akshu stared at the picture of her daughter as she sobbed. Even after much begging and crying, the doctors didn’t allow Akshu to go to the nursery to see the baby. She could barely sit for a second without screaming in pain and the doctors felt it would be better if she waited for a few days. Until then, she made Abhi promise to stay with the baby as much as he was allowed to and video call her every hour.

Even after a few days, it seemed like Akshu was not improving. It didn’t help that she spent all her time crying for her baby. She was desperate to hold her daughter.

As Akshu cleaned her tears, she saw Dr. Roy and Mahima come in. Akshu tried to sit up. The pain was getting a little better.

“Akshara. Be careful, please. You don’t want to mess up your stitches.” Dr. Roy warned her.

“No. I am feeling a lot better. It’s been four days now, I am better now.” Akshu told the two doctors. Just then Abhi came in as well. “Please, Abhi. Tell Dr. Roy and Tayi-ji, I’m better now. I can even go home.”

“She’s right, Tayi-ji.” Abhi nodded his head. “In fact, tomorrow she will be taking part in the Udaipur Marathon aur meri Akshu toh Wonder Woman hai toh she will even come first!”

Akshu shot him a dirty look. Tumhe main baad mein dekh loongi, Nakli Doctor.

“Akshu beta I know you want to go see the baby, just be a little patient, okay? You just had such a bad accident and such a major surgery. It’s really a miracle both you and the baby are okay. This is not a TV serial that you will be recovered the next day. It takes time, na? Just a few more days.” Mahima tried to assure Akshu. With that, Akshu started to cry again.

“Jaan! Look I made a video of her today.” Abhi gave his phone to Akshu. She watched the video and started to cry harder.

Dr. Mahima and Dr. Roy left the room to let Abhi handle her.

The next day, Akshu was in even a worst mood. She refused to talk to anyone or eat anything.

“Akshu, aise zid nahi karte. Tum aisa karogi toh theek kaise hogi?” Badi Mama tried to get her to eat.

“Akshu, chalo beta. Just eat a little. You need to be strong na? Apni bitiya ke paas jahna hai ke nahi?” Manjiri asked her.

The mention of the baby made Akshu cry again. “Please maa. Mujhse aur nahi ho raha. Mujhe apni beti se milne doh. Baas ek baar. Maine aaj tak usse dekha nahi hai…I haven’t even held her yet. Main kaisi buri maa hoon ke apni beti ke paas bhi nahi jah sakti. Bas I’ll watch her from the nursery window…that would be enough.”

“Okay Akshu, I’ll make a deal with you but first finish your food.” Mahima said as she came in.

“Kaisi deal, Tayi-ji?”

“Finish your food first. Then maybe I’ll let you go look at your daughter from outside the nursery.” Mahima smiled at her.

Akshu quickly drank her soup.

“Aaram se beta, it’s still hot.” Badi Mama warned her.

“Ho gaya. All done. Can we go now?”

Mahima looked towards the door of Akshu’s room. There was Abhi pushing a baby bassinet. Akshu gasped. Abhi took the bassinet towards Akshu’s bed and helped Akshu sit up.

“Kya hai na, hamari gudiya ke jo doh Dada-ji hai na woh bhi bilkul pagal ho gaye hain. They are breaking the rules for their princess. Magar Akshu, the baby will go back to her nursery if you don’t get enough rest.” Mahima told her.

Akshu was not listening to a single word. She was staring at the bassinet with tears streaming down her face.

“Tum meri beti ko yeh rotlu chehra dekhogi?” Abhi wiped the tears from Akshu’s face and kissed her forehead. “Ready to meet her?” Akshu nodded.

Badi Mama, Mahima and Manjiri left the room to give the new parents privacy.

Abhi picked up the sleeping baby from the bassinet and handed her to Akshu. “Be very careful, okay? Meri beti bohat nazuk hai.”

Akshu took the baby and started to kiss her all over her face which made the baby stir in her sleep. Akshu was half laughing and half crying, staring at her baby. Akshu realized until this moment, she had never known love this deeply. It was true she loved her family and she loved Abhimanyu more than life…but this? This was something else. It was as if she was holding her heart in her arms. Is this how my Naira Mumma felt when she held me? For the first time in her life, she felt a connection with the mother she never knew.

“Abhi, hamari beti.” Akshu smiled at Abhi with tearful eyes. Abhi sat on the edge of the bed next to her and kissed Akshu’s forehead. “Abhi, yeh real mein toh aur bhi ziyada pyari hai!”

“Woh toh hai. Pata hai I was looking at all the other babies in the nursery. My daughter is the cutest, no doubt. Like have you seen a more perfect looking baby?” Abhi beamed.

“You started a cutest baby competition in the nursery?” Akshu raised her eyebrows at him.

“No but jo sach hai woh sach hai. Papa ki jaan hai sab se pyari. Hai na, meri jaan?” Abhi placed a kiss on the baby’s forehead. Akshu laughed. “Waise Jaan. Pyari toh hai…magar hamari beti bohat intelligent bhi hai.”

“Acha. Woh kaise?”

“Look at how tiny she is? But she already can yawn and move her hand and even blink!” Abhi informed her. Akshu wanted to tell him that’s basic human instincts and all babies could do that but she stopped herself when she saw Abhi looking at the baby and beaming with pride.

“Buddu Doctor!” Akshu kissed his cheek.

“Akshu! Look at my Choti Akshu! She’s smiling…I told you she’s the cutest baby ever!”

“Abhimanyu Birla! Stop calling her Choti Akshu!” Akshu rolled her eyes. “We have to decide on a name.”

“I thought we already did.” Abhimanyu reminded her.

“So that’s final?”

“Yes. It’s perfect for her.” Abhimanyu smiled at Akshu. Akshu smiled back and nodded.

Now that the baby was with Akshu, she all of a sudden felt much better. Luckily for Akshu, the baby barely cried and Badi Mama and Manjiri were always around to help her. Then there was Abhi who didn’t leave them alone even for a second. He would hold the baby and walk around the room with the biggest smile on his face. He would leap with joy every time the baby did anything even if it was just moving her arm.

“Log sach kehte the! Tum sach main mujhe bhool gaye!” Akshu complained one day as she watched Abhi sitting on a chair holding the baby and whispering something to her.

“Maine toh pehle kaha tha, Akshu!” Badi Mama laughed.

“Akshu tum meri beti pe jealous mat ho. Mumma jalkukdi hai na?”

Akshu rolled her eyes. “Yaad hai, Badi Mumma? Sirat Mumma bhi Aaru ko…..” Akshu stopped and looked at Badi Mama in shock.

“Kya hua, Akshu? Tumhari tabiyat theek hai na? Abhimanyu!” Badi Mama exclaimed.

Abhi put the baby in the bassinet and ran to Akshu. “Jaan! Kya hua? Let me call the doctor!”

“Nahi, main theek hoon. Badi Mumma!” Akshu looked at her grand-mother. “Aaru?!?!” Akshu was occupied with trying to meet her daughter that she completely forgot Aarohi was in the car with her too. She just realized Aarohi has not come to see her. “Kahan hai woh? Woh theek hai na?” Akshu started to panic.

“Akshu, beta. Shaant ho jao. Aaru theek hai.”

“Badi Mumma woh mujhse milne nahi aayi. Please Aaru se kaho mujhse milne aaye.” Akshu begged her. Badi Mama looked at Abhi who was standing there shaking with anger.

“No. Aarohi can’t come to see you.” Abhi told Akshu.

“Kyun, Abhi? Kya woh naraz hai mujhse?”

“Kyunki I won’t allow it. Aarohi can never come near you or our baby ever.”

“Abhi. Please. Yeh kya keh raho tum? Badi Mumma aap abhi Aarohi ko phone karo.”

“Akshara. No.” Abhi said through gritted teeth. “Maine ek baar kaha na, Aarohi can’t come near you. Toh bas.”

Akshu looked at Abhi and was speechless. Akshu knew about how intense Abhi’s anger was but she had never been at the receiving end of it. Abhi melted every time he looked at his Akshu. He never said no to her. Forget being angry, he has never raised his voice at her. And he never called her Akshara.

“Lekin kyun? Behn hai meri!” Akshu cried.

“Tumhari behn ki wajah se I almost lost the two most precious things in my life. I almost lost you and my daughter.”

“Abhimanyu, that was an accident. It was not her fault.”

“Akshu theek kahe rahi hai. Tum Akshu ko uski behn door hai kar sakte, beta.” Badi Mama tried to reason.

“Theek hai. Akshara can meet her sister, I can’t stop her. But woh meri beti ki aas paas bhi nahi aa sakti.” Abhi said to Badi Mama and then turned to Akshu. “Aur Akshara tum khud decide kar lo ke tume tumhari behn chaiye yah main.” With that, Abhi walked out of the room.

There’s a first time for everything…Abhi finally lost his cool with his Akshu. What will Akshu do now?
