I don't think its fair to compare a father as a parent vs mother as parent because a dad's approach and the role in a child's life is very different than that of a mother , especially in the 90s. Father's were more of bread winners and mothers caretakers of kids. There might be exceptions to this but I feel in majority of the family mom does the caretaking part of the child. Keeping this in mind and the circumstances of their life and the culture that they follow in their respective household Rakesh is any day closer to his daughter than Vishaka to her son.

Rakesh was left with Naina when she was a new born. Considering the fact that he lived in a joint family and his younger brother having a child of the same age as Naina , its quiet Natural for Chachi to take care of the baby Naina along with Preethi. We never know she might have even breast fed Naina . This is very common in joint families when such tragedies strike. But all through out Rakesh has seen to that Naina is under his control. Her safety is something that he never meddles with. He is a rough character , even if his wife /Naina's mom was alive his approach to Naina would have been the same. If you look back he went for the trip ONLY because his daughter was there. When he realized that Naina got beatings from Kumudh teacher for something she had not done, he felt guilty as he had also questioned his daughter's intention, he then kept a hand on her head with affection. That simple gesture does show his emotions to his daughter. When ever Tayi ji taunts her , he has given it back to the lady. When Tayi hit Naina and she was hospitalized , he was very angry at Tayi ji. When he found Sameer in Naina s room at Mt. Abu he was furious like any father would be . He could have denied her being his daughter. Even during the present track he has always maintain that he is her father not even once has denied or refused to accept her as his daughter. True to the fact the might not have directly brought her up but he has seen to that she lives in a household where she gets enough happiness and care. And we need to remember Rakesh never remarried , he could have but he chose not to. Rather stay alone . Even with Arjun he isn't very affectionate. He feels bad because Arjun didn't come up in life , he feels he has failed as father there as well and hence his struggle to see Naina's life at least goes perfect.

Like any patriarch of an orthodox household , he feels Naina can be happy only by being married off into a family similar to theirs. This is called playing safe and he feels his younger brother s broadminded thoughts wouldn't work in a society like ours. Hence his anger against Anand and the reason for him to blindly listen to his elder brother and wife.

But Vishaka is a different person altogether. We have not even once seen Vishaka standing by Sameer. She is always hiding her affection. She is educated comes from a rich family. Even then she refused the responsibility of a child that she gave birth to. Instead she preferred to keep her other family happy. She is much better placed than Rakesh in life, but sadly she doesn't have the guts to accept Sameer whole heartedly. For her class and status matters. She refused to accept him as her own son at Mt. Abu. Whenever Sameer was in trouble she never stood by him nor did she find someone to stand by him. When there was problem in Delhi , she knew the cause was her mother in law, she sent Sameer away and not her MIL. She never questions her husband of being an incapable father for Sameer. Vishaka is a very weak character and sometimes I feel she is very selfish.

Vishaka's hatred for Naina is because Naina is everything that Vishaka isn't. Naina is one person that Sameer listens to...so basically Naina became the center of Sameer's life and Vishaka couldn't even touch the periphery of his life.

Totally agree with u. At least rakesh's love for naina is not conditional. But vishakha showers her love on sameer when he does something good or he listens to her.

I agree as mother is different from father.Everything Vishakha has been doing makes her a pathetic mother compared to Rakesh.Rakesh is looking better compared to Vishakha .She needed to be with her son but again as in mount abu she left .From that day at Mt Abu Naina has become the centre of his life as she was there when he was so defeted.Sadly Vishakha couldnt understand this & yes she is selfish woman and have different standards for diffrenet peoples according to her own needs

Rakesh has never been been the father that naina deserved
and similar is the case with Vishakha
both of them ignore their child happiness
and just want their motives to be fulfilled
Yesterday though Rakesh did not say a word against sameer but that does not clear all his past misdoings
Vishakha also has again put forward for a condition for. sameer to choose between herself and naina
when she knows he will pick naina
because naina was there for him when she wasn't

Hi WeRockTheWorld

Nice post and I agree with you on some points and on some I don't agree.

I know Vishakha is weak character but you can't judge her as mother.

When she got married to Somani Dadi kept that condition she will never accept Sameer in that house and even Nanu was also aware of it but he still let her marry with Somani and took responsibility of Sameer.

Vishakha knew that her father is there to take care of him. I know she never took stand for him but at least she did try in Delhi.

She knew if Sameer would've stayed in Delhi that poor kid would've suffered too much and she couldn't see that so she send him back.

If you see that's the basic difference between SS and Vishakha.

Vishakha never tried to ruin Sameer's life though her love seems conditional like it's her way or no way.

In case of SS I just don't see that he loves her may be we got glimpses of it sometime but I will still stick to my POV that he just don't love her he just wants to exert that right on her being a parent and he can't see that Naina gives more preference to Anand.

If he truly loves Naina he would've thought about her happiness . He wouldn't have thought of Naina to marry that BKC because of Evil TT's influence.

God! That BKC raised his hand on her before marriage imagine after marriage. Her life would've been living hell and again he was ready to marry her to that juice guy in village. Look at Naina she is so talented, academically bright student her whole life would've been ruin in that village. In this manner at least Vishakha is far better than SS when Sameer told her that he will die without Naina she gave in for him because she can't see him in Mortal danger. Look at SS he was ready to kill Naina literally as well as figuratively by getting her marry to that BKC forcefully and we already saw that.

Though we feel Vishakha is being selfish and judgmental but deep down she does loves and care for Sameer. Right now her prejudice is taking over her love but this can't be said regarding SS.

I am not talking about the affection that these people have towards their kids. I am only analyzing them as parents. I see consistency is Rakesh's character. He is rude to everyone not just with Naina. In fact he isn't happy with anything in life.

Where as Vishaka isn't that way. She is so different with Rohan and Deepika. and other people. So I did keep that as well in my mind while I analysed. Rakesh's core character shows him as rude, insecure person with loads of inferiority complex.

Where as Vishaka doesn't show that level of consistency in her character. Her character is consistent with all the others...with Sameer it depends and is conditional . Hence I feel Rakesh is a better parent than Vishaka.

But we can judge Vishaka as mom if CVs bring Rohan into Preethi's life. Will she accept that relationship and how they handle it will really show Vishaka as mother.

Rakesh was furious with Arjun too. He didn't show any special consideration when he heard about Arjun and Shefali.

Yes he was furious with Arjun but he wanted to hang him self not Arjun but when he found about Naina and Sameer he was ready to kill Naina and to save their false family pride was ready to marry her off to that BKC.
About Rohan I don't think so because regarding him all the decisions are taken by Evil Dadi. Vishakha has no say in that and we have seen that.
About Vishakha's character I don't think so if she wouldn't have known about Naina she would've been same like before in Delhi who tried to understand her son.
Right now she feels that Naina is not right for him and she is letting her prejudice clouding her judgement and love.
It's your POV and it's my POV regarding SS. I still feel Vishakha is at least better than him in this regard.
Though she never gave him that love and care but at least never tried to ruin his life.
In fact she feels Naina is wrong choice of Sameer and he is ruining his life because of her hence she is behaving like this.
But what's SS excuse? He is doing all because of Evil TT not because of love for Naina.

Rakesh actuly had the nerve to point fingers on being a bad parent.
For me he is no better if anything I feel he is tiny bit worse than Vishaka.
Atleast I can say Vishaka has stood up for her son and has shown affection towards him. She left him in the care of her father who was the best person to bring Sameer up. I cant say Rakesh once in his life stood up for his daughter. I get that he doesn't understand the love that Samaina share but how could he not feel even slightly uneasy to get his daughter married to a guy who physically assaulted his daughter and that too only after verbal agreement of marriage. Theres no sadness in his eyes when Taiji taunts his daughter that to in such a cruel manner. He himself calls Naina a janjat that he wants to get rid of as soon as possible. He has no right to point fingers at anyone.

Agreed I am not denying it. Among the two I find Rakesh lil more sincere than Vishaka. A woman who refuses to accept her son in front of others because of his action is not someone I will appreciate. That is worse than the statement Rakesh in anger made when he found his daughter was in love with Sameer.

The thing with Arjun , he didn't accept the relationship with Shefali but here Naina accepted hence the statement in a fit of anger. Again I am not saying what he said is right. Definitely not. None of us fall into group of people who will encourage such an act.
But here we are talking about two parents from 90s with different social, economic and cultural background. Ideally a comparison between them is not fair , but since the post was made I felt considering the situation Rakesh is better placed than Vishaka.

Whatever may be the relationship, what ever may be the anger that a parent has towards their kids...but to deny the child as yours is one of the worst thing that a parent can do. Its from that day my dislike started.

Rakesh in a fit of anger might have said , he wanted to kill her etc...but the fact is Vishaka just denied Sameer as her son in front of those people...that is one thing which can never ever be redeemed.

Rakesh as a person is no gentleman . He is a complete patriarch . Looks up on girl child as a burden . All agreed. But for me, Vishaka is a very shady character who is willing to disown her own blood for class and social status.

PS: I don't think Rakesh would have done anything to Naina. He might have said it in anger . But If it had been Tayi and Tauji in place of Rakesh , I would have expected them to kill Naina with out anyones knowledge. I find them much more dangerous than Rakesh. Rakesh is just words.
