To remain in love not necessarily you need to be in touch. It all depends on how strong & deep one's love is. For instance in movie Notebook- They separated and were not at all in touch. Girl ,in fact falls for someone else & gets engaged too. But once her first love comes in front of her, all she knows & cares is him.

So all I know is ,they are very deep and strong in love ,so no matter how & where they are they'll be TOGETHER one day.
