Chapter 10

Preeti rose up early the following morning bleary eyed and ridden with insomnia. A deep gloom set within her as she recalled the events from last nights revelation. She gazed upward listlessly at the clear skies that seemed to mock her present sombre mood. Battling against her lethargy she swiftly and noiselessly got ready for her early shift closing the front door with extreme care so as to not disturb Naina from her sleep. As she lumbered out onto the pavement she heard her name being called and turned around.
'Hey! Preeti! Wait up!' Swati skipped to her side till she caught up with her.
'Preeti sorry for dropping an indiscretion on him like that last night.' When Preeti was silent Swati added 'Hope youre not mad at me. But I had to tell you because you have a right to know'
'No. Its him Im mad at. Anyway I dont want to talk about it. Ive gotta go or I will be late for work.' Swati sighed in dissapointment as Preeti quickened her gait and turned a corner into the alleyway.
The place was deserted, lifeless and depraved. Preeti tried to blot out the foreboding feeling of wandering down a neglected alley an apt allegory of her present mental state. The culmination of it all was not having Pandit by her side, leaving a deep seated loneliness that consumed her from within and projected itself outward. All she could hear were the sounds of her own footsteps tapping along the pavement and a whistling of a passing breeze that rattled the windows of a rusty and dilapidated looking storehouse just opposite the cafe. And yet she couldnt shake the feeling off that she was being watched. Preeti took a precautious step toward the unnatural rattling noises that continued wondering if it was a stray animal on the hunt for food. She saw her reflection through one of the dusty windows. And..something else... She took a sharp intake of breath and her hairs stood on end at what she saw. A crouched hooded figure lifted its head menacingly revealing the ghostface mask. It rose slowly from the ground just behind her, holding an axe that was suspended mid air before it came gliding toward her. She shrieked in fear and spun round grabbing the axe that she was ready to swing back at her stalker but was instantly thrown back to see Pandit standing before her arms drawn up defensively as she stopped just inches before him, axe in her hand.
'Pandit! What the hell are you doing here?'
'I got your text' He gazed at her wide eyed as she released the axe that dropped to the ground with a clang.
'I didnt send you any text'
'Were you aiming that thing at me?' Preeti skimmed her eyes to either side of the alley but saw noone else in sight. The stalker had vanished. Had she imagined him? Her head was still leaden from a restless night and with everything going on it was likely that she was susceptible to tricks of her own minds conjuring. It had to be that. Or she would have seen the masked figure leave.. She rubbed her forehead and exhaled in exhaustion relieved that it was just Pandit even though she was in no mood to be confronted by him.
'What do you want?' she snapped impatiently
'Preeti I need to explain some things'
'No actually you dont. Ive figured it out already.' He followed her trail as she stopped outside the cafe entrance and twisted the key into the door lock.
Pandit grabbed her wrist and swivelled her around sharply till they were face to face.
'Preeti please dont let something thats happened in the past ruin what we have.' Preeti groaned in frustration and regarded him warily as he advanced towards her making her back up against the door. She searched for the door handle with her free hand before pulling it open and going inside.
'What is that we have huh? Trust? Its your fault if things are ruined. Not mine.' She wandered to her locker and drew out her apron tying it on. He leaned by the locker and shut it abruptly trying to catch her attention.
'Listen..I broke things off to be with you.'
'You were keeping secrets from me when you very well know how open Ive been with you with all the things going on..'
All of a sudden he seized her by her waist and pulled her closer till their mouths brushed. His hold on her tight. The familiar warmth of his body strong against her. He gently brushed her hair away from her cheek and his mouth moved slowly across it to her jawline. His arms ravelled right round her waist and up her back squeezing her into a tight hug, before nestling his head in between her neck and shoulders. She didnt protest, her arms hung limp either side of his.
'Let me go' her face blank and expressionless as she stared vacantly into space.
'Preeti dont do this to me' He murmured annoyed at her stony unresponsive reaction as he pressed her even closer to him.
'I said let go.' she repeated getting all flustered as he endeavoured to squeeze her in a rather aggresive embrace till she twisted in his grasp and winced before just managing to grab his hands prising them away from her.
'Dont worry I wont be doing anything to you anymore.'
Just then Samar appeared confronting Pandit from behind who turned around to face him, his expression inscrutable.
'You got a problem?' Pandit glared at him.
'Youre by my locker..And I'm pretty sure Preeti is done talking to you'
'Just stay out this Samar.' He snarled a wicked glint in his eyes. They continued to stare each other down while a tense silence thickened in the air.
'..D'you guys want duelling pistols or something?' Preeti chided sarcastically after some moments silence passed. Pandit clinched his jaw and shot her a dangerous look. Then he turned sharply on his heel and left banging the cafe door behind him. Preeti shook her head disapprovingly. He had some nerve.
'Is that really your locker?' she asked
'Is that guy really your boyfriend.' he remarked sarcastically. She looked at him distressedly.
'Its complicated.'
'Has he pleaded his case?'
'He tried too right almost after I took his head off with an axe.' Samar raised a quizzical eyebrow.
'I was walking to work and someone tried to scare me, I think..'
'And then he shows up?' His eyes gleamed questioningly. Preeti eyed him warily.
'What are you gett-'
'It's a classic. Messes with your head then rescues you.'
'Thatss...highly impossible'
'Whatever you say'. She threw him a look of agitation as he dissapeared round the back to do the safety checks.
The cafe was dark even with the daylight due to the minimal window openings, and with the overcast sky that started to manifest ominously above it darkened even more. Preeti tried to switch the lights on but the fuse had blown.
'Samar, I need your help.' she called. There was no response.
'Samar?'
She walked tentatively toward the back door and peered out. He wasnt there. She held the door handle and closed it with a creak.
'Preeti-'
'Woah! Shit you made me jump.'
'Sorry. Why so jumpy?'
Samar appeared before her with a lightbulb his eyes seemed to glimmer even in the dim lit interior.
'I dont know. Just tired, hungover. What happened to your shirt?' she asked only noticing him now in his vest. He smirked.
'Feeling hot and got some diy to do thanks to some jerk who decided to tamper with the light system. Hey you want to give me a hand with the tools?'
'Sure.' He climbed up the ladder and offered his hand pulling her up too and she almost lost her balance and fell into him her hands making contact with his chest while he supported her up.
'Careful' his voice was smooth, his body warm under her fingers. They paused for a moment, looking into each others eyes, his gaze tender. He was too close. His eyes then moved down to her mouth that was parted almost invitingly and lingered there. But she regained her composure and hastily distanced herself away from him. The remainder of the task was completed in tense silence. He held the screwdriver by his teeth while offering his hand for her to pass the other things and avoided meeting her eyes. She handed them over and watched him work, the way his shoulder and arm muscles flexed as he did sent shudders up her spine provoking in her somewhat innapropriate feelings she would rather evade. Preeti rebuked her feelings almost immediately and made an excuse to sort other things out.

As the cafe began to settle down with the regular customers Samar strolled over to Preeti.
'Theres a new funfair that opened for the summer. Fancy hanging out there when our shifts over?' He asked with a charming smile
'I..Im not sure that's a good idea' she said with her back to him. He leaned back against the counter top and trailed his eyes down her back while she was busying herself with the coffees.
'Why?'
'Because its not'
'Come on Im not asking you out on a date. Just want to hang out as friends' That was not what she meant. She was afraid to venture too far with the stalker on the loose. She couldnt overlook the fact that she didnt know him too well either..
'Hey..' He said leaning casually against the counter. She jolted back a little and realised he was tugging a bit at her apron strings tied around her back. A suggestive move. She blushed and threw him a cautious look whilst he gave her a charming smile before she continued with making the drinks. He teased her farther tugging till the strings loosened some more. She tried to secure it around her and gasped as he tugged with a bit more force this time till they loosened completely.
'Come on' he persuaded edging slightly nearer while she swivelled round to face him failing to contain the slight smile curving at her mouth.
'Stop' she said incredulously trying to tighten her strings behind her.
'Come on Preeti' he insisted with an enigmatic smile. He took a step closer to her while she backed away and wound his arm around her without touching her while grabbing hold of her apron strings till they fell off easily.
'Pretty please'
'Stop it' she said bashfully
He was much too close for her liking.
'Im good at having fun.' He said arching his eyebrow and trailing his eyes down her body which she welcomed with a hint of a smile that played on her lips.
'Hey whats going on here the customers are awaiting their orders'
They both straightened up as their boss appeared assuming the obvious from seeing the young pair together.
'Get a hold of yourself, this isnt some motel.' scolded their boss.
'Sorry sir'. Samar ran his hand guiltily through his hair and headed back to work stealing a glance at Preeti as he walked past her. She avoided looking his way.

Chapter 10 continued

There was a sudden burst of commotion from outside. Preeti saw the flashing red lights of police cars parked up around the cafe. Samar came to her side.
'Whats going on?'
'..No idea..why are they parked up here?' They exchanged looks of bafflement. There was a loud rapping on the door. Preeti fiddled nervously.
'Open up!' came loud racuous voices of the policemen just outside.
'Please step outside'
'Dyou know this girl?'
A dead body lay in a black sack that leaked with blood. Preeti looked aghast unable to swallow back her fright her body shuddering uncontrollably from the horrid sight before her.
She had seen her in the online profiles and now was seeing her in real flesh. She was beyond recognition her face disfigured and blood soaked. Preeti clamped a hand over her mouth trying not to lurch. It was Hema.

Preeti and Samar had been taken in for questioning. Preeti quickly learnt that everyone from yesterdays party had been called in as the body had been discovered the following morning lying in a dumpster behind the cafe. The police had plied her with all kinds of questions but Preeti had tried her best to steer away from the fact that she and Pandit had had an argument that night. She didn't want to call attention to the link between the dead body and the cause of their arguments. The police officer had concluded the interrogation with a message that made her skin crawl. Warning her to be careful with whom she trusts, the neighbourhood had a shady past and some things were returning back from the gloom. Preeti was desperate to reveal the fact that she had been receiving threats but being under compulsion to keep them to herself made her curse at the policemens inability and complete lack of insight to not see through her disturbed demeanour.
News of the girls death spread round like a tidal wave. Sympathies exchanged between those who knew her. And Preeti was the only one who knew that her murder was connected to her.
This was horrible.
A sudden buzzing sounded again this time from her own locker. Preeti pulled her phone from her bag. She opened the message from the unknown sender with abated breath.
I TOLD YOU I'M WATCHING YOU. EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE. SLEEPING BEAUTY. HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING WHAT YOU KNOW'. Preeti strained her eyes and felt her throat go dry. It was a video of her in her bed. A gloved hand crept over her as she slept and hovered by her serene face. It parted her hair gently away from her cheek. Preeti was screaming internally as she tried to quash the rising feelings of fear as she watched the video. The stalker had been in her own room. She couldnt even tell anyone now, not Pandit either given their recent war games.

News of the girls death spread round like a tidal wave. Sympathies exchanged between those who knew her. And Preeti was the only one who knew that her murder was connected to her. Her and the stalker turned killer...
'The killer is out there. Why would the police feel it necessary to track down everyone at the party last night when only a few knew the dead girl' said Samar
'But what if hes in among us.' Preeti exclaimed scanning the room of people.
'So they locked him in. Big deal.' Samar said rather nonchalantly.
'Its a huge deal. He is unpredictable'
'You say that as if you know him'
'Um no..of course I dont know him. But most killers tend to be unpredictable.'
Suddenly a buzzing noise was emitting from inside her locker again. She pulled out a mobile from her bag. But it wasnt hers. There was a sticker on the back that read property of Hema.
Her face contorted into fear as she read the messages from that phone.
'LUCKY YOU NUMBER 1 MY 1ST CALLER. YOU LOVE THE LIMELIGHT SO MUCH..WELL I PROMISE ITS GOING TO END ON A SPECTACULAR NOTE. She panicked. Someone had planted that phone into her bag. Someone who was in on the whole situation she had with the dead girl. Her stalker. Preeti flicked her eyes around to catch the suspect. But maybe he wasn't hiding behind a mask. Maybe he was here playing her like a fool.
'If I were you I would throw it away' She jumped at Samars voice coming from behind her.
'Or not if you want to be hauled in for a crime you never commited.' Preeti looked at him anxiously.
'Sorry I had to peek at the message but just as well because I sense you were about to show it to the police.'
'I cant do that!'
'Seriously take my advice and discard it. Someone is trying to frame you for that girls murder and they have every reason to since the rumours circling round about your recent spat with Pandit has reached nearly everyones ears in this room.'
Preeti looked at him distraught and tugged nervously on a strand of her hair.
'I'll help you get rid of it'.

As people started to filter out after the gruelling questioning Preeti floated in their midst wondering if she would ever see the day when she could erase that part of her that manifested into the workings of her own mind causing her to retreat within herself. As she was thinking over this Pandit threaded his way to her.
'Preeti I realise I have been doing too much explaining that I forgot to apologise.
Im really really sorry. I was stupid, crazy. It was just that once.'
Preetis expression softened. She looked down at her shoes.
'Ok well I mean thats fair. The thing with me and Samar was just once too.' she said deadpan lifting her head to him.
'..What thing with Samar?'
'We kissed in the cafe.' she lied.
'I guess I deserve that.' he sighed much to her aggravation not making the impact she had intended.
'If I cant trust you I cant be with you' she stated coldly.
'I know, and I know I have to earn it...So whats up with Samar? Do you like him?'
'I dont want to get into a fight right now'
'Me neither'. He gave a sideways glance at Samar before kissing her softly on her lips.
'I miss that' he rasped huskily into her mouth. She turned her head away from him.
'You miss her too dont you?' Pandit sat beside her and tried to meet her gaze.
'No, Preeti. All I want is you.' He curled his hand round her neck and traipsed his other hand around her waist leaning into her to kiss her again but she got up as soon as his lips brushed hers.
'I have to go.' He watched her walk off in solemn silence.

Chapter 11 Thrills

The funfair swarmed with people meandering along various routes, queues of people standing idle as they awaited to hop onto rollercoasters. A cacophony of noise from the roars of those being flung from heights mixed with the metallic grumbling and whirring of the machines and the discordant music issuing from the various rides and carousels that flickered and dazzled with fluorescent lights shunning away the dark of the evening. Preeti and Samar had bumped into the gang and on Swatis insistence joined them. Naina and Sameer were inseparable walking arm in arm and not missing a chance to share a kiss while the others debated on which rides were worth the experience. Only Pandit remained quiet brooding over Samar having taken Preeti to the funfair. Preeti had chosen to ignore him throughout.
While the gangs back were to them Samar gestured to Preeti and led her away. Pandit glanced back at them darkly.
'Where are we going'
'Somewhere more exciting'
They drifted quite far away from the bustling crowd and stumbled upon the abandoned ghosttown area that had been cordoned off to the public. She followed him apprehensively checking her surrounds.
'Samar what are we doing? This is getting kind of scary..' She was feeling jittery not just from the darkness and cool of the night.
'Good it should be. This is the rush we want. The excitement of almost getting caught.'
'Maybe for you.' She replied sarcastically. 'I dont like this, its too isolated. We could get caught..also with the recent events..'
'Relax Preeti, let the thrill help you forget.'
'But the rides are closed.'
'We arent going on the rides. We're just exploring'
Preeti folded her arms and looked around her nervously.
'Seriously Samar I want to turn back. This place is giving me the creeps'.
Preeti saw a flash of sudden movement emerge from behind one of the rides. Then a haunting whistling tune travelled to her ears from the same spot.
'Lets leave' she pleaded tugging his arm. At that instant the rusty looking carousel burst into life, blasting out spooky vintage music and blinding dazzle of neon lights flashed on and off. Preeti felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand as she caught glimpses of a mask from the other side of the carousel. Standing, grinning. Her heart stopped for a beat. Samar held her hand tightly.
They both turned around and walked briskly away breaking into a run all the way back. Preeti looked behind her to see the figure had vanished. They both came to a halt near a bar that was blaring with music from inside and stooped over panting heavily.
'Jeez!' Samar jumped as Sameer emerged from nowhere placing a hand on his shoulder. Naina and the others emerged from the bar to meet them.
'Dude! This a time to go running?'
'Where were you guys?' Naina asked.
Samar recounted what had happened but didnt mention the mask. Preeti wondered if he had seen it at all.
"So let me get this straight..youd rather go into an abandoned part where nothing works than on the actual rides?' Sameer questioned cockily.
'It was his bright idea' Preeti said her heart beat still racing after the scare.
'Whats wrong with doing something a little dangerous, it changes your world view.' Samar retorted.
'Hes always been a rule breaker' Sameer said slapping Samar on the shoulder. Pandit stared at them silently.
The gang decided to hit the bar for the remainder of the evening. As they walked in Pandit pulled Preeti back into a closed off space.
'Why are you avoiding me?'
He was lacing his fingers through her hands as he pinned her to a door. His breath was in her. She turned her head away. He sniffed her neck and kissed her there soft and slow moving down her throat feeling her breath slow down as he did. She scrunched her eyes trying not to succumb to his familiar touches and backed away from him as he advanced toward her. Munna had intervened just then dragging him off to the bar.
Drinks were had and the night wore on. Preeti gazed around her her vision fuzzy. She saw Munna flopped on the table completely passed out. Sameer and Naina were making out in some obscure place leaving just Preeti Samar Swati and Pandit. Samar was discussing his memories of the town and how he had a connect to the abandoned park that he had taken Preeti to. Their dad had taken them there regularly and even though it was now stagnating from neglect it still held a lot of importance to him. Pandit was scowling at he saw Preeti completely attentive to Samars words. Preeti ran her hand through her hair and smiled as Samar wast talking. She was touching his arm and laughing as Samar recounted how they had ran like cowards when the ride suddenly turned on. She gazed at Pandits startled expression with inward glee.
After some time Swati pulled Preeti to accompany her to the bathroom. Preeti waited outside leaning against the wall lost in sombre thoughts. She needed to take her mind off things badly. The situation with Pandit wasnt easing her nerves one bit. She desperately needed to tell someone about the stalker but when Nainas life was on the line she had no other choice but to keep it bottled up. Preeti jumped as she saw Pandit before her. He was staring at her. She couldnt tell how long hed been there.
Preeti maintained her composure eyeing him cooly. He gazed up at her with rather innocent eyes, only she knew how deceptive these eyes could be..
'What are you doing?' He demanded cocking an eyebrow. She was silent.
'Look Im not going to fall for your drama' he said, raising his voice
Preeti tuned him out.
He threw his glass aside in frustration and stood directly efore her.
'Look you better drop this act.' She refused to dignify him with an answer
'I know exactly who you are, ok.' She remained mute to his desperate attempts as he hammered her with his incessant talk. 'I have kept a close watch on you since I first saw you.'
'You better be listening' She ignored his rising tones and simply shrugged off his rather lousy attempts throwing him a look of disbelief at his insistent childishness.
'You're listening aren't you?!'
Preetis stubborn silence pervaded further aggravating Pandit as he grabbed hold of her arm. He needed her validation even if it was only to rebuke his actions for whatever he did. Anything from her to shatter the horrid silence between them.
She returned him a questioning look making him look away.
'You force me to look at you and then look away,' she said tilting her head slightly. ''Just like your fake love'..he furrowed his eyes in irritation and turned to face her again as if defying her statement.
She flashed him a harsh smile, shook her head, and moved away leaving him to deal with that thought. He followed her and challenged her once more
'Why are you doing all this? What will you gain from it?'
'Well?' He implored as she settled into blanking him out again
'Im asking you a question!' his tone growing increasingly impatient.
'Learn to move on Pandit. I have', she smiled at him much too sweetly and walked pass him while quietly shutting the door behind her. It was only a few steps she took before she heard the clinking and shattering sounds of glass. Too easy.. far too easy she thought. She smirked hearing more crashes erupting from behind and left the hallway quietly.
She headed straight for the dancefloor not noticing. Pandit took a sip of his drink while following Preeti with his eyes. She met his lustful gaze that burned into hers, feeling as if he was mentally stripping her. But she didnt care. She planned to lure Samar to her to make Pandit feel the same jealousy she had felt after knowing about his past.
Preeti's eyes flicked over to Samar who was watching her intensely. She smiled wickedly to herself and ran her hands temptingly through her long straight hair, twirling and swaying to the beats of 'bom diggi diggi'. Samar roved his eyes down the length of her body from sheer male instinct leaning back against the sofa.
Pandit took a swig of his drink and watched her longingly. Preeti wandered slowly over to them stopping before Samar gratified to see Pandits face drop as she held Samars hand in hers.
'Dance with me.' She said smoothly. His eyes glimmered and he followed her compliantly smirking at Pandit who curled his lip at him in disgust. Pandits eyes hardened as he watched Samar close in on Preeti from behind as she danced. He grabbed Swatis wrist and pulled her with him to the dancefloor.
'Hey! Let me finish my drink' Swati exclaimed
'Shutup' he grabbed her the drink poured it slowly down her throat before taking some too while pulling her into him.
'Pandit whats gotten into you?' Swati said innocently, unsteady on her feet as the alcohol set in. Pandit threw a spiteful look in their direction. Preeti was swaying seductively close to Samar her long hair whipped around and fell gracefully down her shoulders. She glanced over at Pandit and smiled mischievously.
Pandit pulled Swati into a passionate hug smothering her neck with kisses
''Hmm not so rough..' was her feeble response as she welcomed the intimacy, not at all in her senses. Pandit looked at Preeti smugly from behind Swatis shoulder. His smile faded fast into a scowl as Preeti pulled Samars arms around her and wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders oblivious to Pandits attempt to make her jealous which incensed him even more. Samar looked amused. She leaned on his shoulder but he backed away a step.
'I know what youre trying to do'
'Then humour me' she said eying him seductively and closing the gap as the song changed to 'aao raja'
Sidling up to him she clutched at the open top part of his shirt drawing him closer to her and flipping her hair till it fell against one side and grazed his face.
'Preeti I dont want to take advantage of you. You're drunk.'
'But I want you to. Kiss me' she commanded. He looked genuinely surprised at her boldness. It wasnt like her at all.
'Preeti-' she grazed her lips against his feeling his breath inside her. He pushed her away quite forcefully yet she was determined not to give up and instead slid her hands slowly up his abdomen, to his toned chest that was scorching under her fingers. She glanced in Pandits direction. Swati was leaning against him in rather a intoxicated state. Pandit tightened his arms around her and met Preetis gaze.
She narrowed her eyes and began to unbutton Samars shirt. She nipped his neck moving down to his bare chest while he closed his eyes.
Pandit was fuming as he watched them. His emotions took a violent turn as he shoved Swati against a wall roughly and tried to kiss her but she squirmed in his grasp and pelted him in his legs as she jolted out from her drunken stupour.
He yanked her hair back a frown marking his features and spoke against her ear.
'This is all your doing' he said between gritted teeth. She grappled against him hopelessly.
"What dyou mean?'
'You couldnt keep your mouth shut about me and Hema.'
'She had to know. You are a cheat.'
Pandits eyes glimmered with malice. He leaned dangerous close to her till his teeth touched her mouth.
'Maybe its best for you if you stay out of this Swati.'
'Preeti doesnt deserve you.' She hissed at him. He lunged at her pinning her wrists to the wall a wild look in his eyes.
'Will you learn to shut your mouth or should I help you with that?' he asked
'Try me' she challenged. His body came crushing into hers forcing her to clash against the wall again as he held her by her waist and dragged his teeth across her cheek to her mouth.
'I mean what I say'
He murmured against her mouth and released her before drifting back to the bar for more drinks to wash away the darkening despair that crawled under his skin. He would regret his actions later but for now his emotions were spinning out of control as he observed Preeti, his Preeti getting intimate with Samar.
Her hands were laced through Samars hair. His eyes fell to her lips that parted invitingly. He leaned into her on verge of a kiss then ran his mouth teasingly down her down her neck and across her shoulders. Pandit watched from the shadows inflamed by what he was seeing.
'Who am I kidding' Samar exhaled pulling her into an empty passageway away from all prying eyes before slamming her firmly against a wall and thrusting into her making her gasp.
'I want you so much' he breathed against her throat pulling her leg up, grinding into her before closing his mouth on hers.
They were reliving the moments created in the closet dare but this time it was real. She wanted to resist him but the bliss she felt then was overwhelming.
'Youre perfect' he growled deeply by her ear as he aroused her senses with his persistence making her writhe in his hold and sigh deeply. She threw her head back her eyes shut tight unable to match his fervent pace
'I..cant...' she uttered meekly while he simply smiled a charming smile that reached his eyes
'You asked for this' he whispered huskily changing his pace to a slow intensity.
'Every bit of it' he whispered sensually into her ear as she grimaced into his shoulder a unable to prevent the sighs escaping from her mouth.
He ran his thumb along her lip and kissed her but she was unable to reciprocate feeling the burn below. Her feelings quickly gave way to a cloud of guilt. She mustered every ounce of strength in her and pushed him away from her.
'No, I'm sorry I really cant do this..' she breathed heavily
'Preeti-'
'Im sorry Samar'. She turned her back to him and left.

3 brilliantly written chapters. You capture the dark mood and shady dimensions of the characters well. Things are getting out of hand with Preeti and Pandit making each other jealous under the influence of drink and Pandit is blaming Swati for their separation. Im still not sure entirely who to suspect as the killer now..
Waiting to read next part!

Chapter 12 Illusions

What do you think you're doing?' Pandit snapped with pronounced malice swivelling Samar around as he followed Preeti. Samar got straight to the point,

'You're just upset because she doesn't reciprocate your feelings' he said viciously narrowing his eyes. Pandit replied with a measured composure.

'Don't fool yourself Samar, she's playing a game herself, she has no interest in either me or you.' Samar smirked. Pandit frowned wondering why Samar wasn't ruffled by what he had just told him.

'Maybe you should ask her that' Samar said a mischievous glint in his eyes.
'Didn't you wonder what I was doing with Preeti away from the dancefloor?' He asked self-assuredly strutting closer to him.

'Just me and her... Alone' Samar said twisting the words into him for extra effect. Pandit looked at him nonchalantly.

'There's a limit Samar seriously, don't embarrass yourself with lies'.

Samar was clearly enraged but he checked himself and said with a side glance at Preeti.

'She hasn't objected to what I've told you so you can assume whatever you like.' He said in a sinister undertone.

'We've shared some intimate moments that you will never get yourself since you betrayed her'. He said tenderly, disguising the bitterness he felt towards Pandit. The tension was so thick at this point it made Preeti recoil inside. At the same time she felt used, and looked in repulsion at Samar. She was growing more convinced that this was all being done to spite Pandit, she had learned how Pandit had hated Samar with a passion and she wouldn't put it past Samar to have planned to seduce her just to show Pandit that he could. To upstage him in some sort of battle of male egos. She was unable to find her voice feeling frustrated that Samar had played her even though that was her intention too, initially.

Pandits outrage reached its peak and he pulled Samar by the open collar of his shirt while saying,

'Just look at you with your half-open shirt, strutting your cleavage around like the male sl*g you are. It's no wonder she gave in to you', Pandit lashed out cruelly while throwing him back.

Samars face was livid with a deadly rage, he clenched his teeth and kicked Pandit forcing him to stagger back. Samar approached him but Pandit recovered quickly and punched Samar in the face. Blood trickled down the side of Samars mouth as he turned his head to look at Pandit his face seething with temper while he gritted his teeth, it was a ghastly sight. Samar straightened himself and responded by pounding Pandit hard against his jaw and stood heaving over him as he watched Samar reeling from the blow. Swati jolted out of her initial shock and ran over to Pandit in attempt to detain him from inflicting any further damage on Samar but was thrown roughly onto the floor while Preeti held onto Samar who shoved her away. Pandit regained his footing and advanced on Samar, drawing him by the collar of his shirt again and threw him roughly against the door, he tore his shirt apart before knocking him several times in the chest and jaw. Samar gripped one hand round the back of Pandits head and swiftly swerved him round till he came clashing against the room wall while he thrashed him ruthlessly in the chest with his clenched fist causing him to lurch back from the blows. Then, in an odd turnaround of events he pulled him into a close suffocating hug. Pandit held tightly onto him and they remained wrapped closely in a bloody embrace. The girls were stupefied by the sight and rushed over to them this time managing to pull them apart, and their hysteric yells were drowned out as Samar and Pandit glowered fixedly at one another.
Swati knelt down by Samar and dabbed at his wounds which looked worse than Pandits. Pandit wiped a hand across his mouth and looked at Preetis appalled countenance. He offered a hand to Samar who looked at him dubiously before accepting the gesture and was helped to his feet.

The rest of the night passed by in awkward silence as Preeti, Pandit, Samar and Swati were thrown out of the club feeling every bit of regret, guilt, hurt that coursed through their bodies. Munna lay blissfully passed out ignorant of all the passings that had happened between the 4 while Naina and Sameer turned up and hauled him to his feet. They caught up with the others on their way out and called out to them.
'Look at these dead faces staring back at us.' Sameer quipped as they looked back at him with dull and battered expressions.
'Well? What the hell happened here??' He exclaimed.
'Just had a lot to drink' Samar answered with forced energy in his tone.
'You got into a fight too I see. With each other?' Samar and Pandit exchanged a shameful look at one another.
'Its over now. Lets not dwell on it.' Pandit answered. Naina frowned trying to catch Preetis eye but her head was lowered feeling every bit of shame filling her.
Samar came right behind Preeti while the others walked ahead and spoke so only she could hear him
'Preeti Im sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I got carried away.'
'You didnt hurt me. Its ok. It was my fault for instigating the whole thing.'
'I hope this doesnt change anything'
Preeti snorted and looked back at him. 'Change? Thats been the one constant ever since arriving in this God forsaken place.. Little by little a part of me dies everyday.' She was too worn out to think if that was her actual view of how morbid and bleak everything seemed now or if it was the drink talking. Her vision was starting to blur. Samar looked at her concernedly.
Meanwhile Pandit was doing his best to avoid Swati until she confronted him walking by his side.
'Pandit dont kick yourself, I admit I was wrong to tell on you to Preeti. You have every right to be mad at me. But you shouldnt have taken it out on Samar.' Pandit looked at her apologetically.
'Swati lets not talk about it. I dont want things to get complicated. Im just in a dark place right now and Im sorry I pulled you into it.'
'Well Im just in a drunk place right now.' Swati chirped trying to lighten the mood. 'And Im sure by tomorrow things will set straight by themselves. Everyone will be back to their normal selves.' Pandit highly doubted that but gave Swati a feeble smile all the same. He snuck a look at Preeti who had her head in her hands looking rather exhausted. She trundled forward and lost her balance, the drink was making her head spin. Everything around her spiralled into a havoc and a beam of harsh light filled her vision making her head hurt. The ground below felt as if it were sinking till she felt herself falling down further and further into a deep dark never ending abyss, slipping into a comforting unconsciousness. Samar had lifted her from the ground effortlessly into his arms and carried her to a chair before propping her on it. The blurry faces of the gang surrounded her vision, their voices faraway becoming more and more distant. The last thing she saw was Pandit silhouetted against the light from the end of a tunnel before her eyes closed.

Echoes of mad laughter travelled to her ears.
Preeti opened her eyes abruptly to an inky blackness that swelled her vision. She was lying on what felt like a cool marble flooring. As her eyes adjusted to the dark she caught flickers of light emerging from a distant away. She stood up and slowly followed the light into a red room where huge grinning figures of clowns and monstrous looking creatures adorned the walls on either side. The evil cackles erupted from some hidden speakers along the halls. Preeti floated along it feeling goosebumps prickling her skin. A sinister harpsichord music drifted in as she walked on and found herself trapped by mirrors all round her. Alone. Not a living person in sight. How did she end up here? She jumped and spun around but it was only her own reflection that met her from every angle.
'Naiiina, Swatii??' She called out amid the booming sounds unable to restrain the tremble in her voice. Maybe one of the guys had decided to play a prank on her. Most likely Munna or Sameer.
'This isnt funny guys!' she blurted and tripped over something. Something sharp.
She saw a knife laid before her on the ground. It wasnt a prank. It was a trap. He was in here. But the knife was armour all the same so she didnt hesistate to pick it up. She spun wildly on her feet and saw him. It. The masked figure surrounded her, waving to her. She held the knife in front of her with trembling hands brandishing it hopelessly every so often. Which one was the real one? She rotated on her feet and the figure disappeared in a flash again. One of the mirrors read I am not an illusion in red drippy letters. Blood? Was she about to discover another victim? Then the mask emerged once more, in front of her. She aimed her knife at it but it struck the glass and shattered with a symphonic clinking into smithereens. Preeti had to duck as the glass rained down into fragments. Her eye caught the sight of the hooded mask floating into view in a fragment of glass just by her foot. He was behind her about to raise his arm to strike her. He grinned as she swerved and slashed the knife against what she thought was him. She became mortified on realisation seeing the person before her. It was Swati.

Chaos spread amid the funfair as Preeti watched the ambulance take Swati away. Luckily the injury was not too deep but Preeti felt sick all the same. How had she struck her own friend thinking it was the killer? She had wanted to follow her to the hospital to stay with her. To ask her why she was in the hall? Had Swati seen the masked person?

Preeti entered the interrogation room. She recognised the cop who was questioning her. It was Pandits father who she had seen on the balcony that day when she was still getting to know Pandit.
'Hello Preeti. So you claim to have slashed Swati in self defense. Was she doing something to harm you?
'No! No it wasnt her. But..' she paused recalling the killers texts threatening to harm Naina if she leaked anything to the cops regarding their communications.
'Why would someone harm you?'
'I..honestly dont know. Must have been some random psychopath.'
'Ok...look. Thing is you and all your friends while intoxicated were involved in some fight that got out of hand. Then you somehow ended up alone in the horror ride. Your mind was most likely in a fragile state already.'
'So what are you saying. You think I imagined this?'
'No. But we arent ruling out any possibility.'
Preeti rubbed her forehead feeling too exhausted to defend herself.
'I do have this to say though. You need to be careful of who to trust in this neighbour hood especially with the recent events. I see that youve been hanging out with Samar.'
'..yes, he's Sameers half brother.'
'Of course. But there are things you dont know about him. He has a restraining order from a girl he was obsessed with. He used to break into her room and watch her.'
Preeti listened in complete astonishment and recalled the text message of a video of her in her own bed. The white gloved hand that touched her face. She remembered the first time she met Samar in the cafe and had not realised he was in the staffroom as she was changing. She felt her flesh turn cold and her face pale. The connection between that and what the cop was saying was glaring at her in the face.
'As of yet we have no proofs as to who killed Hema but there are some strong contenders on our list of suspects.' The proof was with her but Nainas life would be in trouble if she blurted out anything. She pursed her lips and tapped her fingers nervously.
'So on that note Ill let you leave though we may call you again if we find any more leads.'
Preeti left the room feeling shaken by the piece of information the cops had told her. Her mobile buzzed and she picked it up.
'1 WORD FROM YOUR MOUTH AND ITS BYE BYE NAINA. OR YOU CAN CHOOSE BETWEEN NAINA AND PANDIT. ONE NEEDS TO GO.JUST CONSIDER THIS AS A LAST WARNING!' A video cropped up of a dead girl in bed. The masked figure watching over her before turning to the camera and putting a finger to his mouth. Preetis breath hitched in her throat, she staggered backwards till she fell into Samar.
'Hey! What did they say?!' a million questions raced through her mind then. If he was the killer he had been playing a very subtle game all along. She tried not to convey any signs of fear as she regarded him.
'Um not much..Im going home now.' she said rushedly searching for Naina.
'Can I drop you?'
'No I want to walk.'
Samar looked at her perplexed by her sudden need to leave as she sped away on foot.
