Chapter 13 II. It takes two
That night Preeti lay in her bed feeling drained of sleep. The cops had finally arrested Samar on discovering a mobile in his name in Kamyas yard. They had soon after learnt about Preeti being stalked and harassed as they unlocked the phone to read all the texts. They had now more proof of his involvement in the murders of the 2 girls through the texts.
She had wondered if she would ever feel at peace knowing he could watch her from anywhere. And now the joy she should have felt after being subjected to his mercy for all this time arrived in depletion ending rather on an anticlimactic note. The ordeal that she had begun to think would never leave her finally did, that day had arrived, and she should've been celebrating. Instead the fear never really left her. Moreover she felt glum.. 2 people had been killed along the way, and all because she was trying to protect the ones closest to her. She couldnt help but feel partly responsible for their deaths however obnoxious she found them to be. It would never leave her conscience.
Something else however was bugging her. Why did Samar seem so surprised when the police arrested him? Was he just acting and trying to maintain the illusion that he was innocent so he could get out of jail to hunt her again? Or was there some truth to what he said? Something in his expression when he was being dragged away made her reassess her judgement of him being the stalker, he seemed to be saying the truth no matter what spin she put on it..she was replaying the events of his arrest in her mind and every time she did felt more and more uneasy. He said something about being framed and used as a scapegoat... Something didnt add up. She recalled the day at the funfair when Samar was with her in the isolated grounds, and how she had seen the masked figure grinning at her from behind the spinning carousel..unless Samar had an accomplice..
The bright harsh light from her phone kept her awake glowing against her bedsheets and casting a sinister shadow in the form of a cloaked figure on her wall...She jolted up and turned her head sharply seeing only her lampstand behind her. Her mind was playing tricks on her again. She peered at her mobile anxiously. It had quickly become an object of distaste. Samar had infiltrated her communications, invaded her privacy breached her personal space in every sense. She shuddered with the remembrance of him, his touches. Of course it had to be him. He picked a fight with Pandit, he tried to separate them, he had threatened Pandit.
A buzz from her phone. She looked at it apprehensively. Get a grip Preeti, Samar is locked up behind bars. She thought. Her phone continued to vibrate till it dropped off her bed onto the floor. Preeti stretched her arm down feeling her hand around the dark. Then, a hand, cold and strong wrapped around her wrist. She screamed and tried to yank her hand free but the grip on her was firm that she was pulled roughly out of bed her back hitting the floor with a nasty thud. He crawled from beneath her bed right over her and pressed his palm over her mouth as she writhed helplessly under his weight till she felt herself drift away as the mask closed over her.
Preeti woke up and found herself downstairs. It was pitch black. She saw her phone from the corner and immediately picked it up dialing in Pandits number.
Preeti dropped her phone and darted up the stairs. Naina wasnt in her bedroom. She hadnt even notified her where she was. Preeti tried to ring Naina but she wasn't picking up. She jolted as her ohine vibrated and the text popped up on the screen: YOU WILL NEVER FEEL SAFE AGAIN! Preeti dashed back downstairs and opened the door bumping right into Pandit.
'Pandit!' he grabbed her shoulders and pulled her back in the house locking the door behind him.
Suddenly there was a loud pounding on the door.
It was Samars voice. Preeti stood with abated breath.
'Open up..Preeti please, you gotta let me in. He's gonna kill me.' He sounded terrified.
' NO! Don't believe him.' Pandit said blocking her way.
Samar rushed in banging the door open, while Pandit aimed a gun at him. Samar looked rough and bruised up. Preeti was trembling and clutching Pandits shirt from behind. Samar stopped in his tracks eying Pandit fearfully
'You stabbed me.' he looked at Preeti 'Someone released me from jail and I got stabbed whilst on the run. I played dead and told the police it was Pandit.'
'What? I didnt stab him Preeti'
'Hey, stop! Stay back' Preeti shouted as Samar tried to take a step to her.
'Preeti I could have run away. But I knew you were in danger and I came to help you'
'Dont listen to him! He probably stabbed himself!' Pandit exclaimed
'You think this is all me?' Samar questioned to Preeti
'I ..I..ddont know what to think.' she stammered. 'Tell me why did you turn up so suddenly when the murders were happening'
'You want to know why I turned up to town?! To get back at Pandit. We both liked the same girl but he was the one who snuck into her bedroom, he was obssesed with her and convinced the cops it was me!'
'Preeti hes lying! He was obsesssed with her and now he is obsessed with you!'
'He's gone mad.'
'You son of-'
'Shhh. It's okay.' Pandit said calmly.
Slowly, a small smile creeped across his face. "We all go a little mad sometimes." Preeti squinted, confused, as Pandit aimed the gun at Samar and pulled the trigger. The blast threw his body against the wall before he slid to a heap on the floor and came to stillness. Pandit turned to face Preeti who stood only feet away, her face aghast...
'Pandit..'
'Preeti I had to do it. He is obsessed with you. I warned him to stay away. He is the stalker.'
She pointed to the masked figure looking through the window. It waved at her.
'No! Hes not the one!'
Pandit moved back from the door and shot at the window but the figure swooped away. Then the door burst open with a resounding bang and the masked figure stood at the doorway before Pandit shot him in the leg till he tumbled backwards to the ground. He peered over the prostrate form before speaking to her.
'Its over..its ok..' she ran over to him and he squeezed her in a crushing hug
'I love you Pandit.' she said whilst he kissed her
'I..I cant believe its over.' Preeti breathed.
'It is. We will inform the cops and you will feel safe again.' Preeti unravelled her arms from his shoulders.
'Wait..what did you just say?'
'We'll inform the cops'
She released herself from his embrace.
'No...Thats what he texted to me on the phone..."You won't feel safe again"..'
Pandit stared at her from the dark. She backed up a step.
'..Oh my God.. Pandit it's you...tell me Im wrong..' she breathed heavily
Pandit scoffed and dropped his head. A slow smirk emerged on his lips before he glanced at her again
'You are not wrong.'
'f**k, no...this can't be happening.'
Pandits eyes were on her, unmoving as she stood rigid with shock.
'Oh but it is Preeti...'
Slowly, she took a step back, petrified moving into the dark refines of the kitchen. Pandits face was no longer familiar to Preeti. There was something evil glinting behind his eyes. She took another step back, shrinking into the dark kitchen. The outline of a figure appeared... standing right behind Preeti. She continued to back up, moving right into the arms of Sameer. Preeti spun around her mouth open in speechless horror as Sameer glanced at her.
' Sameer..please...help me... ' Sameer stared back at her, eyes wide, lips curled in a subtle smile as he held a small compact voice changing device up to his face.
SURPRISE PREETI
Preeti looked back to the doorway seeing the masked figure had gone. She looked back to Pandit, to Samar lying splayed on the floor then to Sameer. It became all too clear. They were working together and had framed Samar. She stood between them, her mind racing. She bolted into the living room if for no other reason than to put space between her and them...but they stood in the entryway, trapping her in.
'Where you going? It's not over yet. We've got one more surprise-'
Sameer reappeared from the front hall...wrestling with something...someone he had a body in tow, thrusting her forward and rolled into the living room. Preeti looked down to find Naina bound and gagged. Her eyes wide in fear, very much alive.
'Seriously did you not see it coming? The killer boyfriends' Sameer smirked running his hand down Nainas face as she turned her head away sharply.
'Wwhy are you ddoing this?' Preeti stuttered
'Its a lot more scarier when there's no motive, Preeti. We did your Mum a favour. That woman was a s**t-bag wh**e she slept around which is why your father is alone.' Sameer snarled.
'Is that motive enough for you? How about this? Your mother was sleeping with our father, and she's the reason my mum moved out and abandoned me and why he took his life.' Pandit said relishing her expression as Preeti looked at them astonished.
'Heres where we say, we are closer than friends. Me and Pandit are brothers from the same dad. The cop is merely his foster dad. But letting people know about us would have caused the town a lot of upset.'
Pandit spoke. 'See you lived the life we were suppose to live. Your mum dumped our dad to hook up with your dad when she found out our dad was part of a cult. How's that for a motive? The faithful sons swore to avenge their fathers grief that led to his suicide and destroyed the family. We had to adopt new identities and my foster dad has no clue. Maternal abandonment and paternal suicide causes serious dysfunctional behavior. It certainly screwed you up. It made you sleep with a psychopath. And it messed you up royally'.
'Pretend this is all a horror movie Preeti. How d'you think it will end?' Sameer asked her.
Pandit spoke again. 'Think about it, your own mother's abandonment leaves you disturbed and hostile in a cruel and inhumane world. Youre delusional. "Where's God," etc. Completely suicidal. One day you snap. The years of pent up frustration pours out on some girls whom you have motive to get rid of because the people that are in your life are all you have and only yours, so that mother filled void is compensated for through the people closest to you..including me.' He grinned at her maliciously. He continued,
'We all go a little mad sometimes. I get it. And so will the cops when they find out traces of your bodyprints among the injured and dead. And the sign of the black magic cult you joined with Naina etched on your bodies. You both turned mad on learning that your mother dumped you.'
'Framing you two is going to be much easier now Samar is dead, and we the boyfriends will escape unscathed and victims of your cult sacrifices.' Sameer said.
'The cops wont buy it.' Preeti spluttered
'You must have wondered why the stalker got away with so many things. Having a cop for a foster dad has its perks...
I know you inside out Preeti, you cant get away from me if you tried.' he said grinding his teeth viciously before closing in on her. 'What a happy family we would have been if your mother stayed with our dad. We'd have made an ackward and innappropriately intimate bunch of step siblings. The four of us.'
'Its good your dad killed himself and your mum deserted you, then they wouldnt have come to see the monsters you lot are!' Preeti spat
Suddenly Pandit lunged at Preeti picking her up effortlessly and thrust her against the wall. His lips brushed against hers
'Take it back' he murmured dangerously
'No'. She was seething scratching at him
He kissed her hard on the mouth then till she was breathless.
'Say youre sorry' he said behind gritted teeth trying to alleviate an urge to hurt her further
'Never' she snarled in repulsion.
She pummelled his chest but he didnt move. He pinned her wrists to the wall with one hand and tightened his fingers over her hand while the other was resting on her waist slowly pulling her shirt up to bare her skin. He kept his eyes on her gaging her reactions with a smirk that played on his lips as his hand sought her skin.
'Youre so pathetic' Preeti exhaled. He followed her mouth with his breathing hard against her.
'You made me that way.'
'You're a born monster' she snarled irked at his complacency
He pressed deeper into her whispering into her ear
'And the best thing is you just told me that you LOVE me.'
'Not anymore' Preeti connected her thigh with his abdomen causing him to stumble back and release her.
'Im not scared of you!' she screamed and yanked her fathers cricket bat swinging at both the boys. Pandit grunted and gripped her arm and pulled her into him from behind. He wrapped his other arm around her neck and tugged her away as Naina looked on helplessly her screams muffled behind the cloth. Sameer carried Naina and followed Pandit.
'Youre too easy' he sighed deeply brushing his teeth against her neck.
All those lies. The deceitful looks hiding behind that exterior of boyish innocence. The sisters had fallen for psychopaths. He was right. They had both been played like fools. Ensared into their combined trap. But she was not going to let them win at their own sick game..
Pandit and Sameer took them to the hallway where Samar lay. Pandit shoved the gun in her hands.
'Time for you to shoot us. After which you two will be jailed. Your lives ruined.' Pandit said nonchalantly.
'And all you will have for it will be memories of us' Sameer said prising away the cloth from Nainas mouth and kissing her one last time. Preeti tried to kick him but Pandit held her back and forced her against the wall pressing up against her till their mouths brushed. He made her hold the gun and pointed it at his abdomen.
'Pull the trigger Preeti..you know you want to.' he said staring into her eyes a wild look in his. Preeti gazed at him horrified
'You're the last face I want to see before I die.' he muttered in a low gravely voice. Preeti narrowed her eyes.
'NO. You dont get to die. You will be the one rotting in jail with your thoughts that you lost at your own game.'
It was as if the power had shifted, she caught a glimpse of desperation in his features and should have felt slightly gratified that her words would have that effect on him. But it no longer mattered anymore.
Preeti dropped the gun and backed up while Naina pushed Sameer away. The girl's whipped around the hallway to make way for the back door but the brothers bolted forward in a matter of seconds, and to their terror were quickly advancing on them. Preeti knocked some chairs over to obstruct the brothers' view, tripping Pandit but before she could get away she felt a firm hand tug at her ankle till she came tumbling down, she tried to pull away but was being dragged back. 'Naina run!' she shrieked
It was too late however as Sameer seized Naina by her waist just as she was about to reach the door. She squirmed against his body strength as he kept a hand closed over her mouth. Meanwhile Pandit had twisted her round and was dragging her along the floor into him but she gave him a good kick in the stomach sending him reeling backwards and quickly shuffled away in panic when she was instantly dragged by her leg again as he hauled her in to him, and speedily crawled over her before she could flee again. She thrashed helplessly under his weight before he pinned her arms to the floor and gazed at her possessively. He kissed her hard, and and felt his hot chest through his shredded shirt as he crushed her beneath him.
'Preeti, you have to end this'. He said breathlessly. She returned him a look of pity, and kissed him back. It caused him to slacken his hold on her arms and she timed her moment to kick him hard before briskly pulling herself away. Pandit leapt up and pulled her into him from behind wrapping an arm around her while pressing one hand over her mouth to stifle her scream. He brushed his mouth against her neck while saying
'Preeti I won't let you leave. Ever.' her face wreathed with anguish and tears rolled down her face from a mixture of tiredness and the pain he was causing her not just from squeezing her tightly. Preeti bit down on his hand and fled his hold and hurled a chair at Sameer causing him to fall backwards. Naina made a frenzied escape from him and caught Preetis hand.
Just then the cops burst in and got them all to keep their hands up. Preeti breathed a sigh of relief. She looked at Naina and smiled reassuringly.
'Justice prevails always.'
The cops would check her phone later and uncover the truth. She had recorded the whole scenario and the truths about the 2 brothers would send the whole town into a frenzy. Pandit and Sameer, the towns dark secrects.
There would always be a part of her that still longed for him...of what should have been. But it was a false illusion. And he was a part of her now. He was right, he would never leave her try as she might to forget him. He had destroyed and scarred her to a point of no return. Perhaps he had won the game afterall.
She gave one last look at Pandit who was being dragged off with Sameer before looking into the distant horizon that was beginning to glow with the specks of a rising sun.
