There are lots of scenes in YHM I am sure many of us wished happened differently. I will try and rewrite one of those scenes.
This picture is dedicated to the Asia Business Head award night that was ruined for Ishita. What would happen if Raman did not find out that Ishita had been lying to him...
Mrs. Raman Bhalla was nervous. In fact, nervous was an understatement. She felt nervous, jittery, excited, on edge, tense, skittish, neurotic, hysterical, fevered, skittish and happy all in one go. Don't get her wrong. She wasn't complaining. Why, you ask. Well, because for the first time she felt like she belonged somewhere... with someone. And that someone was her husband, the great Raman Kumar Bhalla, or Ravan Kumar as she now fondly referred to him, her husband of precisely 8 months and 7 days.
She was experiencing what one would call the first symptoms of being in love. That rush, that excitement one feels when they have done something praiseworthy for their better half and are expecting their reward in return. Not that she had done it expecting a reward, but yes, she did expect some cozy moments with him, or even just an acknowledgement of her importance in his life.
She looked at herself in the mirror. She had dressed herself up in this contemporary white saree, which was embroidered with roses of a very pretty pink colour. The blouse she had worn was sexy too, if she might dare use that word. Living in this Punjabi family for so many months had somehow changed her. She wasn't that demure Ishita living with the remains of her broken heart. Being with this family, being with Raman, being with Ruhi, had changed her. She was a different person now. Completely different.
She knows it might not be fair but she can't help comparing her life before Ruhi and after Ruhi. She was a demure Ishita then. Always did the bidding of others. Always behaved well. Never raised her voice. Now... well now she is no more demure, she is a fighter, she can raise her voice and fight at the drop of a hat, and her behaviour with regards to her husband has been less than lady-like. She still does the bidding of others but also lives for herself. The only thing that hasn't changed about her is that she is a dreamer. Then she dreamed of creating a perfect world with Subbu and now she dreams of creating this magical realm with Raman and Ruhi in it.
Speaking of which, Raman would be here any moment to take her to this award ceremony. He would be awarded with the honour of being Asia Business Head tonight. And she would be with him every step of the way. He had even asked her formally to come with him, albeit a little rudely with a few of his one-liners thrown in the proposal, but he did ask, and she was going with him. Only she knows what she had done to make sure this honour would not be taken away from him. That Ashok Khanna and his bloody brother would remember her name their entire life. Hmph...
But enough of Ashok, she just hoped Raman would like her ensemble. She was right now in her old room. She had come here to save time dressing up. Raman was back home in their room and she was here. She hadn't shown him what she was going to wear. Somehow, she was excited about surprising him with this new look tonight. Simmy said she looked pretty, Mihika said she looked pretty, her amma said she looked pretty, Ruhi said she looked pretty, heck everyone said she looked pretty and she still wasn't happy. Where was he? She had been standing here waiting for him, ready to go since the last 5 minutes and he still hadn't showed up. Stupid Ravan Kumar. Doesn't he know not to make a lady wait? She didn't dare venture to the living room... oh no... if he had any sarcastic comments about how bad she looked she'd rather hear them in the privacy of her bedroom.
She was lost in her thoughts again when she heard the door knob turn and fixed her eyes on the door. He had just about called her name when his eyes fell on her and he stilled. The dazed look in his eyes is something she knows she will cherish all her life.
They came to their senses when she dropped the comb she was holding in her hand. She bent to pick it up and when her eyes fell on him again she noticed him entering and closing the door to her room. Suddenly, she felt very shy, and turned her back to him, not realizing that she was standing in front of a mirror.
He cleared his throat. "Hello, Ms. Iyer."
She furrowed her eyebrows at that. "Ms. Iyer? I think you are forgetting something Mr. Bhalla. I am no longer Ms. Iyer. I am Mrs. Bhalla."
He smirked at that. "Is that so? I don't believe you. Trust me when I says this, my wife, Mrs. Bhalla is a bore. She wears carpets and calls them sarees. You don't look anything like her."
Ishita pouts at that. "Raman..."
"What? It's the truth. She wears carpets, gives long terrifying lectures and bosses me on everything I should and shouldn't do."
Here goes her wish of hearing him praise her. "Why are you with her then?" she asked him, disheartened.
"Because everybody loves her. My parents, my siblings, my daughter... if I get rid of her, they will get rid of me... what all a man has to do to keep the peace in his life." He sighed dramatically.
Ishita was on the verge of crying now. This is not how she imagined the scene would play out. She thought he would see her and tell her she looked beautiful, and then they would go to the party where they would have a good time. Now, she wasn't so sure she wanted to go anywhere with him.
Realizing the downward spiral her mood was taking, Raman spoke up again. "But I am a man after all. I too have some needs, don't you think?"
She looked up at him with tear-filled eyes and asked, "what needs?"
"Well... I was thinking, since my wife doesn't pay any attention to me because she is busy playing perfect daughter-cum-mother, I should find affection elsewhere. I mean, I too need my share of fun."
Ishita was confused now, and this confusion made her furrow her eyebrows even more. "What are you talking about?" she almost whined.
Raman moved closer to her.
"I was talking about having an extra-marital affair... you know... with a certain Ms. Iyer standing in front of me..." Raman whispered in her ear.
Ishita gasped at this. "What?"
Raman continued his game. "Yeah... you know she is this really sexy woman. Exactly my type. Very feisty..." he combed his fingers through her curled long hair and continued his dialogue "and she has this long, long hair. She is very pretty and also fun to be with. Slim too, nothing like my fat wife." Raman smiled looking at her reaction to his words.
Ishita was blushing profusely by now. In his own Ravan Kumar way, he had praised her immensely. He thought she looked sexy.
But Raman was not done talking. "I was going to go to this party with her tonight... lets say I ditch her and take you along. Huh? I will tell everybody that you are my new hot and happening girlfriend. Will you come with me?"
Ishita gave a laugh at that, "Raman, be serious."
Raman tried to look as serious as possible, "I am serious Ishita. Nobody will believe that you are my Jhansi ki Rani. You are looking really beautiful."
Ishita replied with a bashful thank you and moved to the cupboard. She brought out a sleek looking box and opened it in front of Raman. Nestled in it was an elegant looking bracelet she had purchased as a gift for him this morning, on account of this momentous occasion.
"May I?" she asked.
He forwarded his hand in answer. She tied the bracelet around his wrist and looked up to him.
"Thank you." Raman said. "You didn't have to..."
"I wanted to..." Ishita interrupted him, "I wanted to gift you something on this occasion, something you can keep with you, that reminds you of me."
"I love it." He simply replied.
He then forwarded his hand the way all men courting a woman do, and she placed her hand, this time willingly, into his, and then they together made their way out of the room for their very first official date.
