A fruitful Tree

Yaad Hai Ik Din?
Mere Maze Par Baithe Baithe
Cigartte Ki Dibiya Par Tumne
Chhote Se Ek Paudhe Ka
Ek Sketch Banaya Tha

Aakar Dekho,
Us Paudhe Par Phool Aaya Hai

-Gulzar Saab

Translation

Do you remember, one fine day while sitting at my desk you had sketched a plant on my cigarette box. Come take a look, that plant is now bearing a flower.

What beautifully simple lines penned by Gulzar saab to portray the growth of a relationship. Today's beautiful episode reminded me of this nazm so I ended making a small post. I sound like a repetitive parrot when I say that I love this show and today's episode is a prime example of my obsession with this show. (unhealthy perhaps) When Ishita was talking to Mani, I felt a sense of pride in her talking about HER family, her husband and her child, the song Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar came to mind.

Ye Tera Ghar Ye Mera Ghar Kisi Ko Dekhna Ho Gar
To Pehle Aake Maang Le Meri Nazar Teri Nazar

Na Baadlon Ke Chhaon Mein Na Chandni Ke Gaaon Mein
Na Phool Jaise Raaste Bane Hain Iske Vaaste
Magar Ye Ghar Ajeeb Hai Zameen Ke Kareeb Hai
Ye Eent-Pattharon Ka Ghar Hamaari Hasraton Ka Ghar
Ye Tera Ghar...

In the 7 or so months of their marriage, Ishita and Raman have built a home for their unconventional family. This home isn't fancy, it doesn't emanate 24 hours of laughter, not all it's walls are dipped in happiness and it isn't surrounded by a cushiony garden, yet it's their lovely home. For an outsider to understand and appreciate the intricacies of this beautiful home they will have to borrow Raman and Ishita's vision. We saw this beautiful home through Ishita's eyes today when she described her marital bliss to her friend Mani. She told him, yes her husband has flaws, yes he has a complicated past but so does she, and to an outsider it may seem like relationship from hell but to appreciate it's beauty one has to live in that relationship. She states that her husband has numerous qualities that help their marriage blossom but those are not for the outside world to see, the foundation of their marriage is not for public display, it stays hidden between them in their imperfect house made of bricks and held together by their dreams.

Yahan Mahak Wafaaon Ki Mohabbaton Ka Rang Hai
Ye Ghar Tumhara Khwaab Hai Ye Ghar Meri Umang Hai
Na Aarzoo Pe Qaid Hai Na Hausle Pe Jung Hai
Hamaare Hauslon Ka Ghar Hamaari Himmaton Ka Ghar
Ye Tera Ghar...

Their house however unconventional is their home, it stands tall on Ishita's resilience and Raman's unconditional support and fidelity. To outsiders their home may seem unkept with broken windows, walls covered by mold of the past and a ceiling leaking problems but if you look at their home through their eyes, we will see a home kept together with serenity, windows letting hopes and dreams enter their lives, walls colored with their love removing the mold and ceiling kept intact by their commitment and support to protect their tiny family from a rainy day. It is not easy to keep a family intact, it takes strength, determination and unwavering faith in your partner, irrespective of their personal flaws, Ishita and Raman have built a beautiful home together with sheer strength and determination.

Ishita and Raman have sketched a plant on each other's heart and now it's bearing fruits of love, how lucky are we; that we get to witness this relationship blossom into a fruitful tree.

First res!!! Yikes!!! I'm noticing this just now... Doc much as I love reading your posts, I don't think I should be first page responders!!! What u write is absolute poetry! And not to mention the poetry you add that just makes this post divine! Now whatever I may say may seem blah in comparison.. But lemme try anyway!

"Success in marriage is less about doing the big things than it is about doing those little things day after day." - Unknown

And this why their little cocoon is just so beautiful.. Its not about the big sacrifices, big material things, big decisions - but about small joys of everyday life! Its about the little nameboard gesture, about the small pasta and palak-panneer love, about the little sleeping on the bed with Ruhi in between moments.

This family is about a mother-in-law who lends a lap for her to cry on, a father-in-law who would eat idlis with her to make her feel comfortable in a new house, a brother-in-law who won't let her give up on her self-respect by falling at the feet of a creep, a sister-in-law who doesn't shy away from apologising for her husband's crimes once she knows the truth, a daughter who will stand up for her Ishima in front of everyone - even her own mother! But this family is also about a husband who may never talk to her straight face but not hear a word of insult against her by her an outsider, a husband who may not say anything in support of her when she is being blamed, but go to any length to prove her innocence to the whole family, a husband who may not admit he cares, but would panic when she pretends to lose memory! A husband who may not be vocal about his support, but wouldn't hesitate before giving up on a powerful post for her, a husband who may have never said it, but would make her feel loved by giving her the kkhh moment when she needed it the most, a husband who may not have confessed but showed what she meant to him by giving her the ring and asking for a promise of togetherness forever!

With such a sweet home to go back to everyday, why would Ishita be deterred by little disruptions like a frivolous complaint or some losers trying to intimidate her? She is stronger than all of that cos she has her strength - her husband by her side!! And her support system - her family to fall back on!!

And that's why the dialogues today in her scene with Mani were just so apt and just so perfect! You could feel how beautiful her life is through what she said! And for any third person to understand it is difficult!

"Happiness doesn't lie in conspicuous consumption and the relentless amassing of useless crap. Happiness lies in the person sitting beside you and your ability to talk to them. Happiness is clear-headed human interaction and empathy. Happiness is home. And home is not a house - home is a mythological conceit. It is a state of mind. A place of communion and unconditional love. It is where, when you cross its threshold, you finally feel at peace." - Dennis Lehane

Beautiful as usual.

You can never go wrong with the lines of Gulzar Saab. Never. And you seem to know his body of work so well, that you always have the perfect lines to fit the emotion.

This show fills my heart with such poignant emotion day after day. This week, among the set up for the high intensity drama that is to come, every episode has offered a moment of raw emotion that strikes a deep chord. The beauty of it, lies in the subtle, understated scenes which are true to life.

I too was filled with a sense of pride as Ishita gave Mani a glimpse into her family today. What resonated with me is that she clarified that no one would understand the beauty and worth of her and Raman's relationship but the two of them...and more importantly, that no one needed to. And if they didn't understand, they shouldn't judge. The thing is, any relationship shared between two people is theirs alone - they're answerable to no one.

Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar resonates perfectly with what Ishu said to Mani today - that no third person would understand the relationship they shared...and it didn't matter.

Loved your take on the "home" metaphor - driving home the point that its the people that make a home...and that all homes have leaky faucets and creaky floors, and perhaps its those very imperfections, which give it unique character, and make it perfectly cozy...comfortable.

As usual, beautifully written...thank you for your insightful thoughts, and as always, for putting words to emotion in a way I never could.

Love.
P

Yes I'm on the first page! 😃

*Edited*

"The best thing in life is finding someone who knows all your flaws, mistakes, and weaknesses and still thinks you're completely amazing."

That's Raman for Ishita. And that's Ishita for Raman. She knows that he entered this marriage with the baggage of his past drowning him and weighing him down, essentially desensitizing him from his life and family. He knows that she entered this marriage with the shame of her infertility forcing her to feel insecure and inadequate, basically causing her to be unconditionally caring and giving to those around her. They are both imperfect, they are both gray (as Ishita said), but they still choose to compromise and adjust; they choose to accept and embrace the other's weaknesses. They willingly make the other's weaknesses the strength and foundation of their marriage. His anger at his past and her desire to always do good are weaknesses to them as individuals, but the strength to their togetherness. The darkness of his past makes him appreciate the light of his present. Her experiences of always giving to others without expecting anything in return make her cherish even the smallest gestures of care and concern that he showers on her.

What a beautiful way to sum up Ishita's very much needed speech/lecture to Mani. The fact that their individual weaknesses are the strength and foundation to their togetherness would be nearly impossible for anyone on the outside to comprehend; after all, the foundation of a house is never visible to the outside world. It remains under the ground, constantly shouldering the weight and burden of the house on top. Only the two of them can come together with each of their weaknesses to build an imperfectly strong foundation that shoulders the weight of their house and family. It's not always easy, but it's definitely worth it.

No additional lines today. Gulzar sahab's words were too overwhelming to my senses. Thank you for introducing me to his beautiful poetry.

Awesome doc, you have a way with words. I don't have the words to do justice to your post. Gulzar sahib's poetry and Jagjit Singh's ghazals are a deadly combination and my stress buster.

You know I have been reading and reading over you post since last 10 odd minutes or so because of the heart in it. The mood was set by Gulzarji's nazm and it continued throughout .. The subliminal flow of your thoughts.. The way you set their 'imperfectly' perfect relationship within the metaphor of a home just took my breath away. I'm just feeling your words and floating in the lingering feeling of Ishita and Raman's love .
Words fail me when I'm get moved .. Today your post did just that . I love it.. Every word.. Every emotion behind those words.. Just perfect!
Nothing to add .. I can't do justice .

The word is super!
I am super glad that you decided to pen these super beautiful lines. I am super happy because i needed to hear a super writer talking about this show with super positive feelings.

As I was feeling super dismal with the break down of certain characterization. And of cos, I am super sad that the love story needs to go through so many barriers. I am super eager to see a show that will show me super romance and romance only so that i can be super enthralled.

In other words I am feeling super frustrated with the interruptions of their romance because of their siblings, parents , kids and now friend.

Is it so hard to show a simple romantic love story?

How ever the analogy of the tree that has been drawn by Gulzar ... flowers or not enough Doc, we need deep set roots and fruits of the juicy kind.

And I am super glad to see you today. Exams over?
