The word was in that someone had spotted Raman Kumar Bhalla. He looked pristine in an off white raw silk sherwani with architecture inspired jaal work design accompanied by ivory tussar silk pleated kurta and matching broad pants, described a fashion fanatic.
The question was, why would Raman Bhalla, such a powerful man visit Paati's house. Almost everyone had called it a bluff. Except Bala who watched everything take place, truly amused.
While business students talked about meeting him, fashion students wanted to know when he would take a plunge into their industry so that they join them.
"Why the hell is she wearing Payal Singhal?"
"Who?"
"That woman with those two kids the over there? Okay. Why are both the kids dressed in designer clothes."
"Where?"
"Are you blind? Theeerrreee. Okay, now who the hell are they?"
"Let's find out. Wait, that's Ishita. The one from the Meri Maa launch earlier today. That's Ruhi and that is Ragini and Anmol Agnihotri's kid Tamanna."
"Ishita? I need a picture with her for my instagram. Now."
"Ishita bhabhi, Mikku kaha hai?" a frantic Mihir had questioned.
"Aapki Mihika waha par hai. With Shravan."
"Mikku yaar." Mihir had rushed over to Mihika.
"A Punjabi boy, here? What is going on Mrs. K?"
"That is Madhavi's niece, Mihika. The one who returned about seven years along with Madhavi's daughter, Ishita. And that boy is Mihika's boyfriend or fiance or something. They are getting married soon. He works for Raman Kumar Bhalla. His sister is a socialite, don't know who though. Mihika has caught quite a catch."
"But a Punjabi boy."
"It's a love match filled with scandals and what not."
"What about Madhavi's daughter?"
"Oh, her? The one who was dumped and disappeared. She returned with a five year old kid."
"What? A five year kid. Didn't that incident occurred almost seven years ago. Including the pregnancy, did it take her just one and half a year to get over a relationship of 12 years?"
"It's the Iyers' after all. The creme de la creme of the Tamil society. Who knows what goes on with her?"
"Oh. Mrs K. This is my son, he works in the Delhi. He's a lawyer or one of those things."
"Mom. Can we stop discussing my career atleast here. Wait. Isn't that the marriage drama lady?"
"Who? Madhavi?"
"Ah. Yes. That is one crazy family."
"Eh. Why?"
"Oh. They came to apply for a court marriage. Both the sisters are married into Punjabi families. The presiding judge claimed that back then the elder who is married to some influential guy almost eloped. They came into the office, without applying for a licence and then argued on who should have known about the two months clause and who wanted to get married at the earliest. They had left and later come back a few days later to register their marriage, this time with their families. Such an arrogant, hot headed guy. That family is too accommodating. Two daughters and that too marrying Punjabi guys. Are we tamil guys that horrible?"
"Ishita? The girl with the kid?"
"Yes. Her. And you know the funny thing? The guys elder sister, some top notch socialite opposed the marriage and then withdrew her opposition and she herself accompanied them to apply for a marriage registration certificate and apologised for the trouble and handed us two wedding cards. Her marriage was called off as she bled her groom dry just because he cheated on her. And that Punjabi guy is getting married soon. Such high society drama." the son continued, "But they're sweet people. Especially the elder one if you ignore her husband's power and anger. He's scary. The whole place walks on egg shells the minute they pay a visit. It's funny on how such a guy could marry that girl, who doesn't take any bull shit from him. They have a seriously messed up life though, so many personal cases buried never to be opened again, but then that's what power does. Who can blame him for being so powerful."
"So Ishita moves away seven years ago, married an influential guy and then has a daughter with him. What's going on?"
"I told you, Ishita left that guy she was engaged and not the other way around. If it took him years to convince her to marry her and it took that guy less than a year to both meet and marry her, what do you think?"
"Madhavi. We met you for so many years. Once in a blue moon, I agree, but couldn't you tell us that your daughter was married?" a lady had asked.
"Madhavi, where is my great grand daughter? She promised me something and I can't find her anywhere." Paati had asked.
"Oh. Ruhi? Ruhi was here just a few minutes ago. She's with Ishita, I guess. Ishita spoils her. Listens to everything she says, and Ru has learnt to take advantage of that. Ru must be somewhere plotting with her mother on how to trouble my poor son-in-law. He's such a great guy, totally adores them. And they? They start their morcha and he asks for time outs to record them and then when he waits for them to calm down he watches those videos and laughs to himself. And these girls, aayo, Murugan call him names and he is no less. Ruhi is a kid but Ishita and her husbands are grown ups, if only they behaved like adults. Amma, those two." Madhavi ranted. Sometimes she felt bad for her son who stood alone as Ishita and Ruhi ganged up against him, albeit cutely. Poor Raman, Ishita was too much. And Ishita and her mini version were too much. Who would have guessed that Raman was a hot headed businessman who almost ruled the nation with the influence he had, if he was to be found with his family. He turned to a mushy mess for his daughter and the human version of Siri in front his wife. The poor guy had absolutely no power, until things crossed their limits. Madhavi sighed at his state.
"Ruhi. Stop running around. You'll fall baba." Ishita chased her adorable baby.
"Ishima. I'm fine. Don't chase me. If you fall papa will find me incapable of protecting you. And then we'll fight. And if you fall who'll take care of me. So don't run." Ruhi giggled as she came to stop.
"Mera naughty baccha. Bohot bolne laga hai." Ishita said as she tickled Ruhi.
"Chalo. Mama ki bodyguard, stay with mama."
"Ishita didi, yeh kaha lagana hai?" a worker boy called out.
"Abhi aayi, bhaiya." Ishita replied, instructing Ruhi to hold on to her. The last thing Ishita wanted was to lose Ruhi in this huge crowd.
"Ragini. You're a saviour. I need to check the catering. Watch over Ruhi, right. Please?"
"Ishita, as usual, forever busy." Anmol called out as widened his arms for a hug, something Ishita returned. "So, how is Ragini ji ki bestfriend?"
"Good. Good. Warning. Raman nayi aaye hai. So no business talks today." Ishita laughed accompanied by Ragini. "Chalo. I'll get going. On second thoughts, I'll drag Ragini along. Have fun, Anmol."
Ragini and Ishita walked away hand in hand giggling at Anmol's plight, but on second thoughts Anmol loved kids and could handle them very well.
Nalini had watched Ragini interact with guests who attended the party. She seemed so comfortable and diplomatic, as if she did this everyday. She had single handedly managed the whole event though there were people hired. Ishita had given each team her opinion and had improvised till the tiniest detail. She knew what she was dealing with and at what level, as if such a big event was a daily deal for her. Nalini couldn't handle such event. There was too much pressure and stress that came along with it. She had let Ishita take the reins as she stood back and observed. In her whole visit Ishita hadn't even attempted to interact with Subbu. She was lost in her own world and duties to notice him. What had Ishita done to herself. This wasn't the Ishita she had thought what Ishita would be. She had remembered her wedding night where Ishita had placed a peck on Subbu's cheek. Subbu hadn't consummated their marriage that night and when he did he had uttered Ishita's name and requested her of one thing, "Give me a son!" he had requested at the end of every session.
Nalini being Subbu's wife didn't know what went on in Subbu's life. All that she had known was that she had to never tell Subbu that Ishita had gotten married or was attempting to get married - her mother-in-law had warned her the first time. Listen to me and protect your marriage from that woman, Subbu's mother had said. Before every function that had the possibility of a visit from Ishita or any of her family members, her mother and mother-in-law had warned Nalini about Ishita. Keep her away from your husband - she's a vixen, they had said. Look at how she stole the elder son of this family, her mother had screamed. Nalini had never taken the chance to find out or perceive Ishita. She had given Subbu a son a year ago and their physical life had come to an end the minute Nalini had conceived. It was at son's first birthday that Bala, her brother-in-law had received a call from Ishita. She had eavesdropped on her brother-in-law's conversation to know Ishita had fought with her husband. Bala had told her to take things calmly, she had a daughter to think about. And that it was healthy for couples to fight. That her "Raavan Kumar" was a hot headed guy who loved her and their daughter a lot. He was a great father and an admirable husband too. Bala had warned Ishita not to make matters worse. He had told her to give him his space. That moment Nalini had taken her mothers' words seriously. She had married because she loved Subbu, she wouldn't let him get away. If Ishita was unhappy in her marriage, Nalini had vowed to keep Subbu happy, but to no avail.
Subbu was at the house bar installed for the day. He was bored. Such parties weren't meant for like of him. Neither could he mingle with crowds not did he feel like introducing himself to people who only spoke about Ishita - the girl who had finally returned home. Did she lie about her present? Didn't the doctors say that she couldn't conceive? How did she pop up with a kid in tow. A kid who looked and resembled her so much. A kid who reminded him of the Ishita he had met as a teenager. How could Ishita move on so fast? You married within a month, a voice in his head taunted.
"Uffo, papa. Mama is wearing, well I can't describe it. Just wear something in pastel if you're coming will you. Oh. She's wearing the lehenga, Dadi and I had gotten her from the fashion event I had attended. No. You can't Google it papa, we purchased it before the model displayed it. It was just seen on the invite we were given when we were seated. Baah. Papa. How mean are you? Forever aiming to put me in Mama's bad books. Of course she loves me, I'm her baby. I do get forgiven easily because I am smarter than you. Please. Okay. You owe me one. Yes, I'm adorable and I'm shrewd too. Check your WhatsApp in five. Love you, papa. HAAW. Don't make this a trick to get pics of Mama and me. No, what's the word Ishima uses, yes, trolling." a giggling Ruhi passed by him as she spoke to her father. He watched her run to Ishita and click a selfie with her. She had kissed Ishita and had run off. That could have been you if you faced the odds, a voice taunted. That could have been you if you were brave like Bala and not such a Mama's boy.
It had been a Chinese whisper that someone had spotted Raman Bhalla that alerted every soul present there. Why would Raman Bhalla come here? Raman Bhalla was a pure Punjabi man, so there were no community linking. Ishita's Paati wasn't influential enough to have some of the likes of Raman Bhalla around.
"Ruhi Bhalla, let me fix that for you before you trip and fall."
"Mikku chitti, this is super important. I promise I won't trip and fall."
Mihika laughed.
"Ru, fast. Before either of you parents fires the both of us. Or before I confisticate that cell phone of yours. Do you want that?" Mihika had attempted to be stern only to get a defeated look from Ruhi who gladly complied.
"Ye mama ki picture papa ko kyun bhej rahi ho."
"Uffo. Chitti, secret hai. No telling mama."
"Phir se mama aur papa ki matchmaking. I wish I had parents like yours. Harr baath mante hai yaar. No politics at all."
It couldn't be. Raman Kumar Bhalla couldn't be related to Ishita and Ruhi. There were so many Bhalla's. Just because Raman Kumar Bhalla's wife and daughter are protected with high security doesn't mean that anyone and everyone can be linked with him.
"Subramanian Reddy. I am warning you. You broke ties with Ishita, don't cause any drama's like mother. And tell your wife to shut her mouth if she has brains or refer her to mother to know what happens if you mess with Ishita and her daughter around Ishita's husband. Ishita is my sister and nothing to you. You'll are strangers, so keep it that way." was all that Bala had said to him.
The party hai started. Everyone had started enjoying themselves, except him. Ishita's husband was MIA, and to make her Paati's birthday interesting every family present had taken part in a dance. There wasn't anything interesting or eye grabbing to him. Until, Raman Kumar Bhalla made his entrance. A star studded entrance with lights, dance and all that hype making every one feel that they had been transported to a Bollywood set, true to the theme. What was more shocking was when Raman Bhalla had made his way towards Ishita. Subbu had drowned scotch after scotch seeing them together. He had truly lost her. He had truly lost her. And with that he passed out at the bar.
"Ishita. Vandu akka is calling you. Ishitaaa."
"Yes, Vandu. I'm busy baba. Extremely busy."
"Ishita. Stop it before Raman drags us all back to Delhi. How? Huh. He'll drag you and obviously Ruhi which will cause Mihir to leave and Mikku will follow which will be followed by Amma and Appa, maybe. And then Shravu will want to leave this place to which Bala will agree and then I will leave too."
"He isn't that mean. Itne bhi khadoos nahi hai voh."
"Please. Who was that alien with his misguided sense of justice back in Shravan's school. He almost got Shravan expelled."
"Vandu akka!"
"I'm just saying. Let's be safe. We don't want you to be hospitalised before he comes."
"Shravan expelled. Hospitalized before he comes." an auniji who walked past them murmured as she walked over to Madhavi. Upon asking Madhavi, all Madhavi said to the family present there was that "Ishu had fainted a few months ago, and since then father-daughter are taking her health extra seriously. Ruhi is Ishita's walking talking food journal. They even feed her on special occasions just to make sure she isn't going behind their backs and participates in some vrat. It's nothing Paati. Ishita tends to overwork herself and her in-laws take anything related to her too seriously, they pamper her especially Ruhi and her father, you know how Ruhi is - minus Ishita's qualities from her and the overprotective emotional mess in her is all from her father."
"Paati. Papa ke driver ka phone. They're stuck in traffic and papa has requested you to speak to the boy if you know any shortcut. Mama se secret hai, no telling otherwise surprise spoil ho jayega. Papa aur Ruhi ka suprise. Do you know how difficult it is to escape Mama's watchful eye? Almost impossible. Papa owes me a big one. Paati remind him." Ruhi ran towards her Paati her hair flying in waves, adding to her cuteness. She panted as she spoke in intervals, barely able to hold herself in anticipation of her daddy's arrival.
"Papa ka phone hai. Main abhi aati." Madhavi excused herself.
"My par-poti is soo cute. I'm so glad that my Ishu is happy," Paati murmured.
It wasn't Mihika sensual dance on "Sheila ki Jawaani" along Mihir who had come in like a hero to drag her off the stage like a Bollywood hero that had caused mouths to chatter. Though Mihika's dance provided enough fodder to last them a while, as they rambled on how Madhavi had no control over her family or on how Mihika had acted in such a disrespectful way. It wasn't their talks on how Mihika's fiance was too lineant with her or that Mihika looked so good with that Punjabi that caused havoc. It was Raman Kumar Bhalla.
Raman Kumar Bhalla had entered the stage. Raman Kumar Bhalla had romanced Ishita on stage. He had romanced the reject. How could he? Not only that he had taken her daughter into his arms. If the scene had to be animated, Paati swore that she would be able to see smoke escape the audience's ears and nose or those beating hearts pop out of their chests or eyes. Ishita Iyer had danced with Raman Kumar Bhalla. While a part of the audience gang smiled at them, the other gaped at Ishita's audacity to dance, if not be held by an unknown man in public, while another part tried connecting the dots - refusing to connect Ishita with Raman - Ishita and Raman were acquaintances they claimed, maybe Ishita was... No. Ishita wasn't like that. Nor was Ishita the girl to get over a 12 year relationship and have a kid within two years. Kids weren't delivered by storks - making kids took time and effort and Ruhi's parents had done that - Ishita and her husband had done just that.
Raman Kumar Bhalla liked his wife in his arms, correction, he loved her in his arms. She was the Tom to his Jerry. The Felicity to his Oliver. The Dean to his Sam. And Rose to his Ten. She could be the John to his Sherlock. The Peeta to his Katniss. Rebecca to his Klaus. And he wouldn't say a thing. He loved her in his life - the woman who came in like a firefly and brightened his world up with her light. He liked her.
"Kyun Madrasan, I know you love being in my arms but look at the way your whole family tree is staring at us. Kuch toh sharam kar Ladki ho. Tumhara genre hai." Raman had exclaimed.
"Haaw, papa." his daughter had claimed as she tugged at his pants, indicating that she wanted to be lifted. Raman had fixed his daughter's fringe, while his wife had passed a, Papa ke aate hi Ru bilkul chota baccha ban jata hai. To which Raman had aptly comeback with a, Mama ke pass Ruhi baby ban jati hai mere paas toh she's a total grown up. Usse feed main thodi na karta hoon.
"Uffo, papa. App phir se mama ke piche pad gaye," was all that Ruhi said to which Raman had pulled his wife closer to him as he held her waist and said, "Main mama ke piche? Ishima mere piche pad jati hai. Kaise beti ho yaar Ruhi, papa ka saath bhi diya karo."
So with his daughter held securely in his left and with his right arm around his wife's waist (as Ishita rolled her eyes at him, knowing better than to struggle to get out of his grip) Raman had walked towards doom - a huge Hall filled with Madrasans of all kinds. He had just hugged his daughter tighter, rubbing his nose to her belly as she giggled in an attempt to forget his impending misery. Oh, Ishita and the things he did for her.
"Raman. Behave. Ruhi ke saath baad mein khel na." Ishita exclaimed as Ruhi had laughed and gotten off Raman's hold, and had then proceeded to run away to her Paati screaming "Papa aa gaye".
"Kyun? Bali ka bakra toh mein hi hoon jo mere piche ab talwar leke aayi ho."
"Raman, ah. Kuch bhi."
"Bahut shauk tha na biwi se milne ka. Lo, bhugto." He murmured.
Ishita had just shook her head as she put her arm around Raavan Kumar, giving him a you've-lost-it look.
"Paati, yeh Raman hai. And Raman yeh meri Paati, I mean, grandmother hai." Ishita had introduced him to the grandmother she had never once mentioned. Raman had in return given the unknown lady a professional acknowledging smile. Nothing personal, nor anything that could be classified as rude. Just an acknowledging nod, letting her know that he had taken note of her existence and linkage to him and his wife. Ishita had then proceeded to introduce him to all the other members who stood along her grandmother, all to receive the same treatment from him. It was Vishwa who broke the ice when he stated that Ruhi reminded him of Ishita as a kid, so playful yet mature at the same time, though she was a perfect mix of Ishita and Raman.
"Main toh kehta hoon, ki poori ki poori maa pe gayi hai," was what Raman had replied, his rare dimple revealing itself.
"Voh toh hai. Junior Raavan Kumar sunne se better Junior Madrasan" his Madrasan had agreed with him.
"Madrasi Jhansi ki raani. Ek kam padi thi ki ki do do apna liye."
"Haaw. Raavan Kumar. Apne biwi-bacche ka koi aise baath karthe hai kya."
"Haaw. Raavan Kumar." Raman had imitated her.
"Raman. Ishu. Phir se suru mat ho jao." Amma had played refree between the two warring parties.
"No Amma. Hum aise hi hai. Yeh aapas ka love dikhane ka tareeka hai. Promise." Ishita had claimed to which Raman had wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer, only for her to playfully try hitting it away.
"Koi nahi maanenge ki yeh ek bacchi ke parents hai. Shaadi ke bad bilkul nahi badle. Tab bhi aise wars. Ab Ruhi referee hai."
"Home videos se yahi lagta hai.
"Amma. Mini Ishita ko referee kaise bana sakte hai."
"Papa. Shravan mujhe firse tang kar raha hai."
"Nahi. Chitti. Ruhi phirse keh rahi thi ki voh apki favorite hai. Main apka first baby tha na, Chitti. Keh do apni Ruhi se."
"HAAW. Shravan ke bacche. Abhi sikhati hoon. Mama se chamcha giri kar rahe hoon. Abhi dekh leti hoon." a fuming Ruhi chased after an extremely scared Shravan.
"Meri bechari Ruhi."
"Bechari Ruhi, Ishita? Uss din jab Adi se milkar seniors ko pitaya tha tab toh badi self defense ka morcha laga rakha tha Maa Beti ne. Aaj bechari. Pit degi uss Tingu ko. Bachalo apne nephew ko apni beti se, main Mihir ko dekh leta hoon. Bade pankh udd rahe hai uss Romeo ke. Abhi kaat deta hoon."
"Raman. Kyun unka romance bigad rahe ho. Anmol waha hai, Tamanna ko yaha bhej do."
"Kyun uss bechare Tingu ko pitwane ki help kar rahe ho. Ruhi aur Tamanna against him. Woh toh Ruhi se bhag raha hai, uss circus mein Tammy ki entry. Aaj toh tera favourite' boy gaya kaam se." Raman laughed as he walked away.
Raman spotted Bala, Vandita and a random lady with their friend circle. He smirked as he walked to Bala as he said, "Bala yaar. Bachalo apne bete ko. Ruhi bull ke tarah padi hai uske piche aur wo dar ke maare bhag raha hai. Aur vaha Ishita apni beti ki army tayyar kar rahi hai. Bachao usse." After which Raman tapped Bala's shoulder twice as he walked towards Anmol.
"How do you know Raman Bhalla or how does he know you?" Nalini was the first to ask Bala.
"Yes, Bala. How does such a hot shot know you. Almost a decade in Delhi and you've gotten all these connections now."
"He's Ishita's husband and Ruhi's father." Vandita had laughed it off, "Bala and connections. Kya yaar."
"Ishita's husband? Wait. WHAT? Ishita's husband. Ishita Iyer's husband?!" Nalini had cross questioned Vandita.
"She's Ishita Raman Kumar Bhalla now." Bala had laughed it off.
"He's the guy she dumped Subbu for? No wonder. What's Subbu compared to that catch." someone had exclaimed.
"Correction. What is Subbu compared to her? She's pretty successful as a woman belonging to medicine. And look at him now, and look at her. All that's left is their bragging mother No offence Bala and Vandita. While Ishita is successful in both her married life, Subbu is still reaching there whilst being tied down to a wife who only drag him further down. He would have succeeded with Ishita, if only he hadn't dumped her so brutally. I admire the way she walked away and rebuilt her life all over again." a couple walked over with a glass of wine in their respective hands.
"She just married rich. Nothing else." another claimed.
"Do you think it's easy being Raman Kumar Bhalla's wife? The scandals, fame, parties, society, the constant nitpicking, having every move criticized. There's a reason why Raman had suddenly closed off his personal life from the media until his charitable project dedicated to them where he acknowledged that his well hidden family would be participating in. Till then Raman's uber beautiful, successful and supportive wife shielded from the media but ironically an active part of his social life and their daughter was a mystery. The top creme of the society only in contact with them." the first contradicted.
"I agree, Ishita is successful without any help from her husband. A woman who stands on her own feet. Not to the likes of Shagun Mehta who drained her ex dry."
"Shagun deserved what she got. The financial gain and freedom. She didn't come out of it scot free either. She has an emotionally tormented son, a starting out career and so many responsibilities she wasn't accustomed to, to take care of. Instead, we should be proud of her for handling her situation so well instead of attempting to hold on, change or crying over that guy. Period." Vandita had ended their discussion of Shagun.
Paati was ecstatic at the situation. Both her grandchildren were home and both of them had picked up the pieces of their broken life. They had fixed themselves up. There was nothing more Paati wished from life. This was the greatest she had gotten from life. Her angels happy. She looked on as Ishita chased after a running Ruhi who chased after Shravan with a weapon' Paati's old eyes couldn't really clearly see. Tamanna had joined Ruhi in her quest and they had managed to corner Shravan. Paati looked over to Raman who along with Anmol rolled his eyes. Her Vishwa was talking to a pouting Nitya who had her arms folded against her chest.
As family oriented this day was, the next morning was equally scandalising. Nalini and a few other ladies who were asked for a favor as they passed by Ishita's bedroom. In attempts of doing the favor they had walked on to a shirtless Raman Kumar draped in nothing but a sheet and Ishita Bhalla, dressed in her husbands dress shirt as she attempted to snatch away the sheet covering him and him screaming, "Ishita, yeh to besharmi hai yaar. Kyun meri izzat lootne pe tuli ho, Madrasan? Ab bathroom mein ghuss jana kam pad gaya ki yeh sab kar rahi ho." only to have Ishita growl, "Raman, uttar o isse, abhi. Warna."
