u r right..there always used to be an awesome lunch in south indian marriages..But as it an iyer marriage it usally take place early in d morning..So they might have had their breakfast in the show..Anyways rasam in breakfastOriginally posted by: madhubala123
Seriously!! Is baat pe hume case krna chahiye!! 😆
In the marriage scene they were serving idlis and somehow rasam came with that!!What kind of kangaal family are the Iyers?? Don't we have that awesome meals for marriages which are the main highlight!!Who eats idlis for lunch unless they are ill?? 😆 (sorry if anyone does, I basically don't like idli). Atleast shw some dosas for a change. The only south indian items Iyer family know are idli, rasam, sambhar, payasam(don't know which one 😕) and vada. I think there should be one episode where Ishu should make a proepr south Indian meal for the Bhallas like she did with the Punjabi food!!I don't know this, but I' curious, is neem chutney so common in Tamil Iyer food?? I hve never heard that 😛The whole point of South Indians not interested in food is getting on my nerves. SOuth Indians, be it Tamilians, Keralites or Iyers in particular have a wide range of dishes!!If you are setting up a typical Brahmin household do some proper research atleast. Its not a big deal in these days!!!Things I want to see on the show : Upma(already shown), pongal, kesari (thats so common in Iyer houses during festivals), uthappam, vatta kuzhambu (😆), aviyal, poriyal (different types esp pavakkai (karela), poli(sweet), mulaku bhajji, vengaya sambhar, rava laddoo etc... 😆😆
I am a Punjabi who is settled in Bangalore for the past four years and have couple of Tamilian friends one of them being an Iyer i.e. a Tamilian Brahman.
Therefore, I think can explain and understand the perspective of both sides pretty well.well said👏👏👏actually the makers forgot their show is been watched by south indians too...😔😔I am a Punjabi who is settled in Bangalore for the past four years and have couple of Tamilian friends one of them being an Iyer i.e. a Tamilian Brahman.
Therefore, I think can explain and understand the perspective of both sides pretty well.To begin with, while, I agree that Punjabis are loud, lavish and a little over the top, but they definitely do not drink at the drop of hat or eat butter chicken all the time. They eat various other dishes. I mean can we forget Dal Makhni, Sarso ka Saag ,Chole Bhature or the famous Maa ke haath ka Gajar ka Halwa. I agree that they want to stick to the clich world but seriously come on, all the dishes mentioned above are signature dishes and probably been shown in every other Punjabi serial or movie over the years. Of course, Punjabi cuisine has much more to offer but they need to stop showing that Punjabis will be cast as the next villain in the new series of Chicken Run 😆😆.Now on to the South Indian counterparts. Before I begin, I need to share my personal experience. Before I moved to Bangalore, I had stuffed myself for 10 days with various dishes from north because I thought when I move to Bangalore, I am gonna only get Idly, Vada, Dosa or Uttapam. Nothing else. I will have to survive on Sambhar and Rasam. While I love each and every one of them (BTW, I had idly's in breakfast this morning 😳), yet I am a Punjabi who needs who needs paranthas. However, four years later, and thanks to some of my South Indian friends, I now know that how much South Indian food has to offer. That all the items mentioned are actually a part of Tiffin and not lunch or dinner. You cannot beat a south indian with their numerous rice preparations, poriyals, payasam and this is to say the least.I have attended couple of typical Tamil Brahman feasts and believe me, I look forward to these ... the only thing I wanna do after I go there is crash on my bed because I literally overeat. Each and everything is so delicious and so sumptuous and it is not dosa, idli or vada. One thing which drew me to this serial was its proximity to the reality. I liked that they showed the south indian wedding so nicely with all the kashi yatra which btw is actually too much fun.But at the same time, they did not show Ishu wearing a Thaali (pardon me if I have pronounced it wrong) which is like an essential for a Tamilian. Further, the Iyer family seems to be from a decent background so it was ironic that they served idly, dosa and vada for wedding lunch.Another pointer is the dressing scene. I have worn saree for every important occasion of my life. If Punjabis in Delhi only wear suits even in marriages, why do we see lines in front of saree shops when there is sale. What about the countless boutiques and designers. All of them will go bankrupt if Delhi Punjabi ladies stop wearing sarees in weddings. Therefore, no one from the family wearing a saree in Raman's family was a big turn off for me. Similarly, excuse me, Ishita is not a gaanv ki gori that she only wears saarees. Why can't she wear salwar suits, jeans kurti. Yet again typical stereotyping. For once I had agreed with Simmi when she said, "Ye to ham breakfast me khate hai.". Darling, south Indians bhi ye sab breakfast me khate hai ... shaadi ke khane me to bilkul nahi ... they should have shown exotic south indian food.I refuse to believe that an entrepreneur like Ekta has never tasted good south indian food in some of the best restaurants of this country so may be should have been more realistic with this.I just realized that although I am a Punjabi, I have ended up writing more for south Indians. But really that does not matter. I respect both the cultures and take the best from both of them. At the same it makes me very sad when these cultures are misrepresented in any which way especially when we have an International Jodi award behind us and so many viewers from other countries interpret it as Indian society.Oh my God ... I have written an essay today .. So sorry about my bak bak but this is one topic which had been nagging me for a while and you brought it up ... 😆😆CheersBhanu.
