Sunjoy does a Saptapadi after Saat Phere

After enjoying the ratings ride with Zee TV's Saat Phere, Sunjoy Wadhwa (Sphere Origin) is all busy readying his brand new show for Star One. And interestingly, the show has also been tentatively titled on the same lines - Saptapadi (seven vows of Hindu marriage). The channel has not yet zeroed down on a telecast date.

Arjun Punjj will play the lead on the show

Confirming the news exclusively to Tellychakkar.com Sunjoy Wadhwa, says, "The title of the show might just undergo changes. We have a beautiful starcast and its a wonderful concept, though at this stage I can't reveal much about the storyline." .

Arjun Punjj will be playing one of the lead protagonists on the show. Says Arjun, "Yes, I am doing the show. It's a clean family drama with a variety of characters in it. " The actor was last seen in Sahara One's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki and later opted out of the show as it was going in for a leap.

Along with Arjun, Aamir Dalvi will be playing the second lead on the show, who is currently playing the character of Lakhan in Jabb Love Hua on Zee.

A fresh face has been roped in to play the female lead, Parakh Madan.

Kiran will play father to the female lead Parakh Madan

Kiran Karmarkar will play husband to Indrani. They have two daughters, one being Parakh the other Pariva Pranati. Pariva was associated with Prithviraj Chauhan and is currently playing Alpa's (Rucha's sister) character in Bhabhi.

"I play the lead's sister who has a love angle with Arjun Punjj. There are many exciting situations on the show, but you have to wait and watch," says an elated Pariva.

Along with the above interesting lineup of actors, Neena Gupta will also form an important part of the show. Neena who is presently in Delhi confirmed that she will be doing Sunjoy's new show. Kiran was unavailable for comment.

We hope a fresh female face turns out to be lucky for this one, as it did for Saat Phere!

Reena Kapoor hates saris

Reena Kapoor aka Pari of Woh Rehne Wali Mehelon Ki, says that she's comfortable wearing jeans and T-shirts. The actor, who, previously as Rani and now as Pari, has been subjected to wearing saris and salwaar kameezes,
says she loves western clothes. Unfortunately, her roles don't allow her to indulge in clothes that she would like to wear. "I don't wear saris regularly. In fact, I am not a sari person at all. Right now, I am wearing salwaar kameezes in the show, but once this character gets married, I'll be back to wearing saris," says Reena.

'Nobody wants to tie me a rakhi!'

...that's Arjun Punjj's story. So what are the other TV celebs up to this Raksha Bandhan? Harshada Rege finds out

Since Raksha Bandhan is celebrated with much aplomb on the small screen, we decided to check out how our actors celebrate the festival offscreen.

ARJUN PUNJJ

Unfortunately, I don't have any sisters as I am the only child. But, my cousins who
live abroad send me rakhis every year and I tie them without fail. I am waiting for their rakhis to arrive this time too and I am sure I'll get them before the festival. Actually, nobody wants to tie me a rakhi!

SAI DEODHAR

My brothers don't live here. Most of my cousins are located in Pune and hence I used to go there. But now with my shooting schedule I don't get time to visit them. Instead, I just invite
my cousins who live in the city for a quiet dinner. Also, north Indians send rakhis even to their sons and daughter-in-laws, so I'll probably get those from my inlaws. But it's definitely the family dinner that I really look forward to.

REENA KAPOOR

This Raksha Bandhan, I am going to be all by myself. My brother is a sailor and he's on the ship right now. So, we can't be together on that day. And though I miss him everyday, on Raksha Bandhan, I miss him more than ever. For me rakhi means giving gifts, not getting them, because my brother is the youngest in the family and we have always given him gifts. Unfortunately, this year though I have sent him a rakhi, I don't think he'll get it in time.

ANKUR NAYAAR

My sisters don't live in Mumbai. But they do send me rakhis before the festival. I make sure that I wear those on the day. But I don't necessarily wait for this day to give gifts to my sisters. We have a strong bond
and it's okay if we don't celebrate it on a particular day. However, I will be visiting my home town sometime later this month, so I guess my sisters will expect some goodies from me.

NIKHIL ARYA

My sister lives in the US and though she does come down once in a while saying that I miss her on Raksha Bandhan is an understatement. We email each other regularly, but this Raksha Bandhan my parents will be visiting her, so I have sent her a letter. I am sure she will be surprised as I am not the kind of person who will actually sit down to write a long letter. I am looking forward to her call. And I am sure that, like every year, this year too she'll send her rakhi on time.

ROSHNI CHOPRA

I don't have a real brother, but I have always sent rakhis for my cousin in the US. His sister ties him the rakhi on my behalf. I don't tie a rakhi to any friend or colleague, because I haven't come across anyone whom I can expect to look after me. And I don't believe in tying a rakhi just for the sake of it.

In the driver's seat

Gurdeep Kohli and Arjun Punjj buy a new set of hot wheels

Malay Desai

Buying a car, especially an imported one can be quite a task. When the petite Gurdeep Kohli wanted one such car for herself, her boyfriend Arjun Punjj promptly bought her the latest model of the Honda Civic four-wheeler.

"Hey, the new car is for both of us," says Gurdeep. "I am not a car freak. It's Arjun who has been giving me all the gyaan about cars and bikes. Honestly speaking, we would love to own a Hummer. But for now, we love our new Honda Civic. The car was Arjun's choice."

"The Honda Civic is the newest model from the car makers and it has recently been launched in India. We will get our car in August," says Arjun. "The car is bluish in colour and since both of us drive, we can't wait to have fun with the Japanese beauty!"

After a successful role in Sanjeevani, Gurdeep is now seen in Zee TV's Sindoor Tere Naam Ka as the lead actress. What else is on their plate? "Sindoor… takes up most of my time," says Gurdeep

Bollywood birthday bash for Arjun Punjj

It was another Wednesday, and another Bollywood Night at Enigma, J W Marriott, but this one had cake too! As DJ Akhtar spinned some Bollywood magic from his console, a bevy of television actors wished co-star Arjun Punjj a very happy birthday. Spotted were stalwarts from the television
industry like Alok Nath and Anjan Srivastava, who were very comfortable mingling with the Gen X of the small screen.
Also spotted were the Meet brothers — Harmeet and Manmeet, Shefali Zariwala, designer A D Singh, Siddharth Kannan, Aman and Sonia Nagpal and Hiten Paintal with girlfriend Kishwar Merchant, among many others. Kishen Mulchandani was his boisterous self and added to the revelry.
The event that was sponsored by Spotlight Events was quite a hit with the crowd as they boogied away to Bollywood and Punjabi remixes. And there was enough cake to go around after Arjun cut it and fed some to girlfriend Gurdeep Kohli.

MAD ABOUT YOU

Some fans are ready to go to any lengths to express their adoration for these telly stars. Harshada Rege explores...

Getting mobbed and having cellphone cameras shoved in front of their faces is something that celebs are used to. But many a time, even stars are stumped with the lengths that their fans go to just to get close to them. BT spoke to some actors to know about their craziest fans.

IQBAL KHAN

Iqbal Khan, who has a huge female fan-following, says, "I love to interact with my fans. But yes, sometimes one does come across fans who are a bit scary." Speaking about one such fan, Iqbal says, "There was a lady who would keep calling me her son. Somehow, she would always know what I was doing or going to do. Once when I was going to drop my brother at the airport, she called me and told me not to go as it was raining. And when I returned, she called me again to reprimand me for the same. That was when I got a bit worried." Not surprisingly, the actor has now stopped taking calls from this particular fan.

SHILPA SAKLANI

Shilpa Saklani who became
popular as Ganga in Star Plus' Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, had a fan who sent her flowers and gifts for over four months. He also approached her to do a show for him. However, when the actor refused to comply, the fan got abusive. Shilpa says, "He was very abusive. In fact, after a point my husband Apoorva had to step in and tell him off." However such incidents don't deter Shilpa from interacting with her fans. "I make sure that I am nice to all my fans, especially senior citizens and kids. However, I immediately back off when some fans try to get too friendly," she says.

ARJUN PUNJJ

Arjun Punjj, who was popular as Prince in Sahara One's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, was stumped when a fan came up to him and touched his feet. "When we were shooting he landed up on the sets and fought with the security guys, because he wanted to meet me. When we allowed him to come on the sets, he touched my feet. That was really bizzare. I took him to my van and offered him tea, but I had to ask him to go after a while when the shooting resumed," says Arjun. Arjun says that though, most of the actors are ready to sign autographs and pose with their fans, it's a bit irritating when people expect you keep talking when you have just returned back after working for long hours.

NAUSHEEN ALI SARDAR

Actor Nausheen Ali Sardar aka Kkusum, wasn't amused when she was told that a fan had slit his wrist when she refused to meet him. "This fan called me and told me that he wanted to be my friend. I realised that he was trying to be too friendly and tried to put him off politely, but he continued to trouble me. After a while I had to be rude to him. Later, someone told me that he had slit his wrist. But people advised me that I should not visit him or he would do such things in the future too," says Nausheen.

Bhaiya mere...

Kavita Barjatya pays a tribute to her brother Sooraj Barjatya by borrowing generously from his two hit films, Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain, in her serial Woh Rehne Wali...

Subhash K Jha

A still from Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki

For all we know, Vivah could be Sooraj Barjatya's last film for some time as a director. Following the Yashraj model, Sooraj has also decided to act as on-hand producer for films coming out of the illustrious Rajshri banner. Even as the master-filmmaker of the large Barjatya clan moves back to let his assistants make movies, his sister Kavita has decided to pay bhaiya a hefty homage in the serial Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki (WRWMK). The daily marathon last week touched the 500 episode.

Now after episode 500, WRWMK is borrowing generously from Sooraj's two back-to-back big-screen family sagas Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain. Says Kavita, "Yes I'm inspired by these films in my serial. As the plot goes, the protagonist Pari (Reena Kapoor) is currently bringing her husband's family together."

Kavita Barjatya
The character echoes Tabu in Hum Saath Saath Hain and Renuka Shahane in Hum Aapke Hain Koun. "And why not?" says Kavita. "These classic films render themselves well to the soap format. The Rajshri films have always upheld joint-family values. You'll be surprised to know we all live under the same roof and in a harmony that replicates our cinema. By God's grace I've a wonderful support system in my family who stand by me in my bad times. I'd like to extend that feeling of belonging to home viewers."

"I wouldn't like to comment on its success on Sahara," says Kavita. "But when people say WRWMK upholds the Rajshri tradition I feel very happy. When I started looking after the television wing of my brother's production house I knew I had taken on a big responsibility. This is the banner that gave audiences films like Dosti, Tapasya, Upahaar, Nadia Ke Paar, Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun. I wanted WRWMK to live up to the Rajshri standards."

I feel like a married woman now '

Reena Kapoor may have been married for the past few years, but something's changed now!

HARSHADA REGE

Reena Kapoor is one lucky actress. A generation leap and 500 episodes later, she's not playing mother or grandmother or greatgrandmother to anyone in SaharaOne's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki. She has also managed to keep away from the dreaded whitener that's a must with age leaps. "Yes, I have been lucky. But with generation leaps, the actors around you change. So even if I have been around, some cast members have changed and that did trouble me earlier. But whenever I used to feel low, I used to speak to my producer Kavita Barjatya, who's been there for me throughout," says Reena.
And it's not just completion of 500 episodes that Reena is happy about. "My husband (Karan Nijher) has moved to Mumbai. Earlier, he was based in Delhi and I used to be here, but things have changed for the better. I am a proper married woman now," she laughs. But she is very often busy with her hectic schedule. "If you are playing a lead character, you have to be around all the time. But I have no complaints about the schedules. The production house is very good to me. Secondly, one can't really ask for a role like that of Rani or Pari."
In the past few years, Reena has seen the TRPs shoot up and slide down. "I would be lying if I say that I am not affected by it, but now I have learnt not to take these things seriously. Every time the TRPs slide down, we try and do better to keep up
the popularity," she says. Reena has been associated with Woh... for a long time now, so does she plan to take up a new project? "Not really. I am happy with my role and I don't see any reason to look for more," she says. But doesn't she, as a viewer, get tired of serials that go on for many years? "If a serial starts pakaoing people, it should be wrapped up. But I don't think we need to worry about that," she laughs.
