Hey there all the lovely people !!!
Me is back with my Sunday nonsense. It's out right weird. But bribes forced my hand and here is what it is.
A special THANK YOU to @manasa and @asfia for they both have renamed to story to Chalu Uma. And these two have been a constant support when I couldn't even think of a word more. I love. You guys for you force my insanity out on the paper.
Part 4
It was weeks since she had met the stranger, Uma Shankar. She was reminded of him whenever her gaze fell on the corner of fairy lights where that scrunched piece of paper was, amongst the pictures she had hung there, she had put up all her special memories on that wall, illuminating them with the tiny lights.
She smiled a bit remembering his grey layered kurta which made his eyes like pit of coals. She sighed and switched off her side lamp and fell asleep at the sad memory of not having the chance to know him more, not that it mattered but still she didn't like that he left abruptly.
Kanak was walking down the mandir stairs when she saw him, Uma serving food to the needy. It was surprising that he was here, she came to the mandir often but had never seen him before... she called out to him but before she could reach him he sat in his car and left.
It was heart breaking to be this near and then turning his back to her, Uma knew she would be coming to mandir today, she was under his constant surveillance. He placed himself strategically and left when he was sure she noticed him. He sighed loudly, holding tightly the steering wheel, for he was angry, the little games were entertaining but there was distance between them, he had to be near her... soon he said to himself and drove off reluctantly.
She came to the mandir for two consecutive days, but he didn't appear, she waited for a while sitting near the old tree, her gaze sweeped on the crowd every now and then... Uma watched her from his car, she was waiting for him... it was time to confront her. He got off his car and went up to the mandir... he prayed and was at the steps when she stood there with her hands on her hips, looking at him. She was annoyed he assumed.
"Hey there she called him getting his attention towards a conversation. "Hi He replied back pretending not to have recognized her. "We met at the wedding, I was your neighbor next door... remember??? Kanak said to ruffle his memory... she was losing patience because it seemed that he had forgotten her and here she was guilty about it... she added "Anyways forget ... when he interrupted "Kanak!! With a firmness getting her attention to him.
"I wanted to ask you left abruptly... I wanted to apologize for the misunderstanding... she said not wanting to extend their conversation any longer... she wanted the guilt off her mind.
"I was offended for a while, but couldn't hold a grudge for long, you and me aren't friends ... he said gesturing towards her "...I left for there was no reason to stay for there wasn't anyone for me Liar!! his mind screamed at his words, he was dying to stay back to convince her, to trap her to make her fall in love, but his conceited mind had come up with the guilt angle, he wanted to make her suffer a bit...
"I am sorry for it she said and left. He stood there for a while taking in, looking at her retreat, he had it all his way, but then she changed it all, she had the power to hold his attention all to herself that it usually stopped working when she was around.
"Kanak... Kanak ... Kanak are you ready?? " Rani callee her from outside the room... "... the Pandit jee is about to come with the Larkey wale ... Kanak listened with a heavy heart, she knew that Bhabho would arrange a match for her someday and she would accept it without any objections, but when the day finally came, she felt weird.. it wasn't that she didn't trust Bhabho, but Kanak had kept her say from such a big decision gave her jitters.
She got up from in front of the mirror, she was wearing a simple shirt and straight trousers with duppata pinned to the side. She didn't apply any makeup just Kohled up her eyes and there she saw herself as plain as she could do it without upsetting Bhabho.
She followed Rani Bhabhi towards the hall, her eyes cast down, she didn't want to face her fate now... she looked up when a young woman few years older than her stood in front of her, she held out her hand and said "hi I am Saras, Uma's sister Kanak head flew up mechanically at his name. She looked directly at him, all the nervousness fading away and anger riled up for no reason.
Uma watched her enter from across the hall, her head hung down as if she was walking like a robot. She looked beautiful, her simple dress, her face devoid of makeup yet she absorbed all his attention toward herself. She didn't look his way, she wasn't expecting him, she wasn't ready for the marriage, she wasn't happy, her smile was missing, the only ornament she ever needed.
At his name she looked up, something flicked through her eyes. Earlier she was nervous and anxious but now she was angry maybe, he couldn't quite figure out her reaction. It was indeed a surprise but such a reaction made him uneasy. She would be the end off him, but he smartened up and stood up smiling at her. He was ready for round 2.
