TSMSPJ*ep.55*5.6.17: My Impression* The right to safeguard
The kind of life we lead, is where the word of honour which prevailed during times of our forefathers, just will not suffice. Where media and technology keeps us abreast with what goes around us. Citizens are more politically, socially and morally aware. Knowledge too can be retrieved at the click of a button, to save our precious commodity, that of time. Whereas the world has shrunk in terms of distance, it also has its cons of identity thefts and cyber related crimes. Hence the sense to protect our basic rights is moresharp than ever before. Within the social systems, in certain societies across the world, gender inequality thrives and it is quite a huge step to take, to set the balance right. Where by women alongside men, can be given the appropriate rights they deserve. To me the episode today is about Kanak s plea for her rights as a married woman in the event of things turning sour between her and her unpredictable husband Uma Shankar.
The episode cannot be considered without, the back drop of events that have already transpired. The marriage without one partners consent tops it all. In most faiths known to me the holy bond of matrimony is only confirmed after the parties entering into nuptials give a verbal affirmation, which is further more confirmed by witness of the formal contract. In Kanak's case, as we are aware the faith formalities were adhered too, but without the bride's consent. For me it is only right to look out for rights, as a precautionary measure. Her demand to be financially viable in case her husband Uma Shankar decides to leaves her high and dry is perfectly acceptable and profound. Since her marriage to Uma Shankar is one of a kind from both sides. His side is, he follows the signs of his faith. Kanak goes along with the forced marriage, as she too has her own ulterior motive ,to retrieve her Bhabo's shop papers. Hence Kanak acts less of a filmy heroine head over heels in love with the handsome hunk of Ladnun..and more of a realist woman. She does not mince her words, speaks her wants for to cover untoward damage he may give her by deserting ,abandoning her ,in the long term. After all Kanak also has the example of Payal's husband Aditya's mysterious disappearance, which as far as Kanak can gauge in her short stay no one dare's question. Payal parades as a silent figure of a honourable daughter in law, and is taken in normal stride..
For her protective stipulation.. I quite liked the manner in which Kanak, wants her choice of jewels, and the big chunk of financial security a property which guarantees monies , even as it stands. Her choice of jewels is of course to dupe the gallant Uma Shankar into believing that women go for ostensible weighty, valuable pieces of ornaments , to promote their beauty. It does cross my mind , if Uma is benevolently handing her what she wants, as a form of barter ,exchange for his love? Surely the astute worldly wise, faith motivated devotee, can see through the lady knight in shining armour? Kanak's demand for financial security , after marriage.. reminds me of the demands for dowry made by the man's side upon the girl's side, with the threat give dowry or forfeit the girls marriage! Kanak's stand for pre-nuptial settlement seems reasonable to me in this day and age in particular. However I also give credit to the girl's education, which can see her through future hard times if any. Yet since,Uma too agrees that as her husband what's his is hers too, to share. Which goes to show within the land of the law , that in case of the marriage ending, the husband provides an agreed sum for his ex wife's maintenance.. guarantee her future security .
Have to add Uma Shankar stands by his word of granting her three wishes. Well she knew he would , seeing as he has an abundance of wealth. Kanaks somewhat staid, disciplined acceptance of jewellery fails to alert Uma , the girl really is not after his wealth. But Uma too plays along her demand.. is he on to something? or is it for the love of you Kanak, anything she wants. Finally in the name of her right to financial safeguard its to the shop's papers ! erhh.. slight emotional hitch.. Lord Shiva's sketch from her to him! Pride of place on top of Uma's property papers.. his fixed stare into Kanak's eyes, relay.. it was one most precious possession he has! because she made it! Kanak can read his expression, but blanks it with a nervous smile. Uma's silent gaze with all its connotations must not pose a hindrance in her eventual goal. Again Kanak spots the very papers she wants ,without wasting much time. In fact to cover herself she adds, its in the name he's given her! well! Well! What do you know! he already bought this property in her name!! thanks! Kanak mocks ,looks like she is connected to the sweet shop ,by name!! She accepts with a beaming smile! Mission accomplished without complications! Uma only studies her silently.
Her choice. With Kanak making choices between Uma and Bhabo is hardly an issue.. Uma is a stranger, she latches on too for a purpose. She is not related to him. On the other hand Ved her brother,is still sore as he'd rather not be put in the position to chose between two loved ones.. his Bhabo or his beloved sister Kanak! he confesses to babbasa over a cup of tea.. he'd rather abstain from deciding, as it will hurt one of them. Blood ties makes it hard to select amongst loved ones.
It's time to put away the booty in her suitcase. She got her right to safe guard her interests. The suit case and its contents are all Kanak's belongings.. fitting her demands is a bit of chore! Never fear when the resourceful Uma Shankar is here! He passes her bag to her, with a curt comment, here, this should be big enough to hold your three wishes. Well by the looks of things it's a bit obvious for him to ask is she planning to do a runner yet again? But Kanak retorts, not really.. he needs to transfer the property in her name only then can she prove claim on it! Kanak appears well prepared in terms of property matters.. and what's more Uma too smothers up whatever is in his heart and rather graciously signs on a blank? stamp paper??? for her to keep! Along with his word! Kanak smiles , his word? she has to show she is unsure.. as with Uma , nothing is as straight as it appears. He cheated her Bhabo , who knows what he has up his sleeve this time?
Ok... its his turn to let her know about the implications of getting her full rights to her namesake sweet shop. The registration transfer can take up to twenty days.. Kanak gets the message sigh! Another twenty days here? Well! That's it!! the mighty Uma flips ! and bag and baggage he literally throws her out! Precap the clash of the titans !Uma hits her below the belt, calls herself centered and comments on her upbringing, that failed to teach the significance of honoring bonds! For Kanak of course this is a soft spot as for her Bhabo she is even ready to give up her life! She understands he is vexed about her rejecting him.. she predicts won't be long before he severs this marriage ordained by the gods.
Overall it was a powerful episode, where both actors performed well in their given scenes. The episode thus belongs to both Kanak and Uma. For me, there's Uma who himself recognizes there are major differences between how they think. There's Kanak, for whom her marriage is a forced one , without love, and I am glad at every chance she gets she makes him realize that. Her fight to safeguard her rights seem justified to me, and as far as I can see ,Uma Shankar does seem to understand that too.His wrath in the end too is understandable. A wounded lion is more dangerous. .. does cross my mind that kanak never promised him a rose garden.. will the two be the lamp and the wick?? wants me to find out by continuing to watch this show...
