TSMSPJ*ep: 43* 22.5.17: My Impression * masking things out..
It's about concealing and part covering something from view. So basically a protective overlay. Today's episode for me contains instances where both, true nature of incidents ,characters are somewhat veiled. Characters mask out the truth about themselves or scenarios and simply put a facade to blend in with situations. However we see two women in Rathi household masking things out for various reasons. Kanak is into putting up a front to procure her Bhabo's papers.. all for a loved one. Meenaskshi puts that very shop on the line ,masks things out before the rest of her family for the sake of marrying Golu into an affluent family. There's Uma who gets himself branded all to win Kanak's heart.
The exotic lunch setting on the afloat diner , boasts of the airs and graces of Uma Shankar's family stature. The discrimination between eating habits between men and women remind me of the prim and proper table decorum of aristocratic Victorian times. Kanak is reminded in a masked way, time and again of how, one as esteemed as Uma's spouse should be seen to behave. Suman is reminded, of abundance of food for them, hence time should be taken to eat. However in Kanak's mind, this brought on facade of family decorum fails to mask out the fact that Uma has in actual fact cheated her Bhabo. Uma on the other hand braves his mark with his usual front of taking things in a stride , all in the name of faith..
Arvind turns up disguised as waiter,for all, except Kanak! who acts fast, soils her dress asks to be excused. Maasi alerts Palomi.. to accompany Kanak. Maasi's vulture eyes never trust Kanak. Arvind as the waiter offers to rinse off the stain on her dress. Uma does stop and stare but gives no indication of being duped, takes the undercover act as part of the waiters job. Arvind in his act partly clears Kanak's ignorance in terms of a quick getaway from Uma and his realm.. a boat will wait for in evening by the afloat cottage. While Kanak joins the family ,her truth remains unmasked in her mind, soon she will snatch her Bhabo's papers and flee from Uma and his lot forever! Uma unmasks his feelings in the silence of his heart.. not long before the distance of differences between him and Kanak will be lessened...what irony!
Massi's pep talk with Uma before his nuptial night is all about maintaining her role in his life. She knows full well ,that Uma will always connect his life experiences to the strong hold of his faith. His reference to Yashoda , Lord Krishna's foster mother' , strengths Maasi's position in his life, as it's her nurturing he uses as a yardstick for modelling his life. Interestingly, instead of giving him guidance on striving for a strong partnership with his wife. Massi instead empowers his character and reminds him not to lose his true soul, his true worth! His self respect by being swept away in Kanak's beauty and love. This way Maasi finds a gentle way of masking out her dislike of Kanak.She has Uma in her control like putty. Uma leaves to buy Kanak a present..
Massi I would say, uses Palomi rather cruelly as her handmaiden to be the carrier of Kanak's nuptial night clothes. On the other hand in this scene she also literally shows Palomi the unholy stance of continuing to set her eye upon a married man Sad to see how hard Palomi tries to mask out her heartfelt envy of Kanak's position. Since years she aspired to be Uma's wife but how easily he dropped in Kanak's lap. But the heart likes to takes chances!while Kanak's bathes in bathroom. Palomi compares her love and devotion for Uma with Kanak's sheer luck! Palomi cannot mask out her feelings and takes the cummerbund meant for Kanak, and puts it around her semi exposed waist.. obviously, dreams of what it would feel like when Uma takes it off! But Maasi arrives and in no uncertain words roughly unmasks the truth about Palomi's status in the house! As merely one, of a loved servant. Massi warns Palomi to keep a check on her unbridled emotions or else.. she will have to leave! To have feelings for Uma a married man! is going against the rules set in faith!! So Palomi's devotion is spurned aside. While Maasi encourages Kanak to unmask her emotions and surrender her all to Uma, to ensure that she wins over him for the rest of her life!, with a vulgar laugh Maasi. Kanak pulls her masks out! and muses.. she won't allow him the chance to win! She'll snatch her Bhabo's happiness and be away with it..
"what a tangled web we weave when we first learn to deceive".. Marlow.. the scene of Khandelwal's visit to the Rathi's household is all in all a game of pretence and lies by Meenakshi. It;s funny how slowly her lies and cover ups are exposed. She comes across as greedy and selfish..only aspires for marrying off her son into a rich household. Disregarding the impact the sale of the shop will have on the family. It's like the whole scene is geared to clearing some serious misconceptions and misunderstandings. Not sure if I should feel empathy for Meenakshi? she went through the masquerade for Golu's wedding. Went through the whole rigmarole of feigning chicken pox, which rather cleverly is cured! by Rani's face mask. One after the other .. vital bits of information are exposed! the old lady Khandelwal, gave the face mask to was not some distant relative but the elder of this household! along with babbsa! With comic undertones and surprises..Ved ,Vansh and Khandelwal realize that Meenakshi masked out the truth from them! The sad note is Khandelwal is not amused, that the shop belongs to her family and Ved calls off the business deal. But Meenakshi's truth that Golu's marriage rests upon the sale of the shop to khandewal .. Vansh and all are hurt that Meenakshi was aware that Golu's fil was buying the shop! Bhabo is earlier at the shop mixing dough in her lit up hearth!.. it's a running business as usual.. with a sincere heart she makes laddos for Golu's father in law... but as irony has it, Bhabo walks into the scenario after Meenakshi is exposed..certainly not for Bhabo's ears.. she hears her shop! her soul is being sold! Her memorabilia of Suraj and Sandhya is being disposed off .. it.s a near death situation for her, she swoons in Vansh's arms! Ved gets an important phone call.. the owner of the sweet shop is one Uma Shankar!!! but the message is masked out for Ved by Bhabo's swooning.. Meenakshi watches Bhabo in pain and seems she recognizes that Kanak sweet shop is not just a sweet mart..it a link of love.. gone, but not quite. Some emotions cannot be masked out!
The final scene was emotional..is Kanak's good work going to be worth it's while? Well Kanak although a suspect.. manages to set sail! But not without some revelation.. Uma is not the cheat as she assumed. Arvind confirms that Bhabo sold Uma the shop and her thumbprints are genuine too.. question is why did Bhabo pass out? as far as she knows..she has sold the shop already?? Hamlet53 23.5.17
