Romantic roles and musicals were the some of the most meaty roles a lot of commercial actresses could get. Still Kajol did try to got out of the box to the extent that she could with Gupt and Dushman. Even if you looks at some of Madhuri's most memorable films they were romantic musicals like Beta, Dil, HAHK, DTPH and Ram Lakhan she was the romantic angle only. So can't single out Kajol. Yes, the three you mentioned really made an effort to go out of the box with limited opportunities. But none received a whole lot of commercial success that was a compromise they made because they had different ambitions.

lovely explanation👍🏼

The point is not only about Kajol''s below average acting or the length of the roles she got despite lack of skills. We're also talking about stardom. Madhuri was the main draw in most of these movies (except Ram Lakhan in your list). Sridevi was the main star in most her peak movies, too. Kajol never was the star attraction. It always was SRK or the banner or some other male actor.

Also Kajol got alot of undeserved praise

But like I said maybe the fact that all she do now is small roles in her hubbies films is penance 😆

While Kajol is highly overrated and her acting has become trash now, to dismiss her entirely as a KJO/SRK product is a bit silly.

Both Kajol and SRK debuted in 1992 with flop films. Both became popular in 93 with Bazigar. Then SRK had success with Darr and another film in 94 (can't remember the name), Kajol had success with Yeh DIllagi. That film had Akshay and Saif, neither of whom were successful at that time.

Then both found back to back success with KA and DDLJ in 95. I think KA and DDLJ were SRK's first success in leading role, before that he was playing negative role.

Then both had a flop phase in 96. In 97, SRK had DTPH, while Kajol had Ishq and Gupt.

In 98 SRK was going through another flop phase, while 98 was Kajol's most successful year. PTHT, PKTDK, Dushman. Finally KKHH which made history.

99 was another low for SRK, while Kajol had HADMRH.

Afterwards, Kajol got married and became a veteran actress, while SRK turned into a megastar.

Kajol acted well in the 90s, even if in conventional roles. But she never took risks, never challenged herself, and kept playing the same dreamy-romantic-girl role again and again. Her acting has become utterly horrifyingly bad now, couldn't stand her in MNIK etc, and she gets awarded for no rhyme or reason. So yes she's overrated today.. But IMO she was a solid commercial actress in the 90s.

And those who doubt it -- she was popular in the 90s. Not Sri/Madhuri level popular, but she was certainly more popular than Juhi, Karishma, etc. In fact she is the only one from 90s (except Tabu maybe) who managed to sustain her career for 20 years.

I think Kajol is actually very beautiful - her face is pretty in my opinion and she looks stunning now with that bod.

IMO 90s did not have the best groom. Her face is def better than the likes of Aloo Bangan. I don't think the skin lightening treatments look natural if she did do them???

Took me long to believe I'm beautiful: Kajol

She had that x-factor and certainly looked very unique from other actresses.
