DDLJ was hit because of its songs mostly and NRI connections

It was first movie that was set in foreign land in beginning itself characters

SRK was a super star by the time DDLJ was released thanks to darr and bazigaar

Majority went to watch SRK than kajol in DDLJ

Kajol became super star after DDLJ not before that

I think DDLJ success credit goes to Jatin lalit and SRK majorly than adii chopra or kajol

They both pulled audience to theatre

In fair-skinned obsessed Bollywood, Kajol was a game changer of sorts and then had the most unconventional looks. She could've been easily panned down but she survived BECAUSE she was accepted by the audience, not just because of "connections".

KJO/Dharma wasn't as big a production house in the 90s as it is today, and so many directors that Kajol worked with were either newcomers or emerging.
SRK was an emerging star himself when DDLJ happened. It was his first major romantic role. If SRK-Kajol pairing worked, then shouldn't Kajol be equally credited for making the pairing work? Never understood why the "pairing" credit always go to male actors.

Also, if Kajol had connections then Tabu didn't have any lesser connections. She is Shabana Azmi's niece, Ajay Devgan's childhood friend, her sister was an actress and was always on good terms with KJO-Aditya-Farah-SRK gang.😆

Honestly, Tabu didn't find her niche until late 90 and was super-mediocre in her early 90s films.
No one took her seriously until she successfully carved her niche in off-beat roles.
She is in a league of her own now, BUT in the 90s Kajol was almost like a GIANT compared to a then-struggling Tabu.

As an actress, Kajol was quite decent too.

Pyar To Hona Hi Tha,
Ishq,
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,
Pyar Kiya To Darna Kiya,
Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain,
Gupt etc.......
they were NOT poor performances. 👍🏼👏

So it seems illogical to say that she was nobody's favorite actress in the 90s because during 1997-1999 phase, she saw success that no other actress at that time had seen. I'm retty sure, she became a mass-favorite during this time.

Rani......has defintely emerged as a better actress than Kajol, BUT, like all other actresses she also took some time in grooming her self/skills. She was never considered Kajols' contemprary anways. They were always kept in differnt leagues, because Rani "emerged" when Kajol stopped acting actively.

Kajol's only SOLID contemporary in the 90s I'd say was Urmila who would've eaten Kajol alive if they ever appeared in a film together, OR if Umrila ever did the roles that Kajol did.

Only thing I dislike about Kajol is her snobbish, loud and rude off-screen persoanlity, BUT she NAILED it the 90s and the audiences at that time loved her. Can't take that credit away from her.

I do not agree tabu was friends with adi chopra, Kjo, farah etc

They may know her from childhood because of being born in shabana azmi family

But they never gave tabu any opportunity like kajol in movies

Tabu never used her family connections except with ajay devgan to get movies

ajay and she did 3-4 movies but i doubt ajay recommended her for them as he was a new comer during vijaypath etc indeed vijaypath was signed by raveena and after fight she left, tabu saved ajay by doing it after first choice heroine rejected it actually

I saw vijaypath i think tabu did better acting than ajay in that - she was not mediocre actor her roles were more like typical heroine till macchis came. So audience never felt highly of her thats all. She was like juhi/sonali/urmila/manisha etc till machhis came. Only than she was considered as good actress

Tabu was not a teenage heart throbe etc she never wore small dresses and pranced around like karishma/kajol in early movies. She always acted elder to her age. May be because she was very tall she looked at 21 age also like a 30 year old mature woman. So she got such mature roles in movies thats all. She was a good actress from starting only watch her early 1990s movies. She lost out by signing not to do movie till Prem film released. So till 1996 she only did 4-5 movies thats why she lost out 5-6 years of her acting life. Tabu was 25 years when her debut movie released actually. Where as kajol/karishma debuted at 16 years

@red Sorry to bust your bubble but behind the scenes, she was also a part of the "SRK gang" that everyone loves to hate these days. She's been Farah Khan's closeset friend since late 90s.

Also, KJO and Farah weren't very prominent as they are today. They weren't even film directors in the 90s. Apart from that, being a friend has nothing do with being offered roles.

Films were offered to people who clicked/connected with the audience at that time.
Kajol clicked (right from Baazigar), while Tabu didn't (until Maachis happened). Quite simple.






See. I absolutely adore Tabu as an actress. She is among my favt actresses.

But I can't discredit or undermine Kajol for her work, and the adoration she recieved from the audience.
It's fair to say Kajol recieved awards due to "connections", but she was overwhelmingly loved by the audiences i the 90s (which can't be done with "connections") and the audiences at that time cared more for Kajol than Tabu in the 90s, but you're free to disagree with that.

Its typical IF tendency though.

Popular, fame, awards = overrated, hyped-up, nepotistic etc🤔

Totally agreed. Kajol was the Alia Bhatt of 90s.

She had some good acting chops too but paled in comparison to her other contemporaries specially in beauty and grace. But the other contemporaries didn’t get half the chances she got.

Kajol has delivered successful movies with most leading men in her prime and she was mostly an equal part of the movie's success unlike many top actresses like DP, PC and Kareena who had played flowerpot roles in top hero films.

Kajol has delivered big hits with all three Khans, she played negative characters and characters that were required to do more than dancing and look glamorous onscreen. Her pairing with SRK just over shadows her individual success as an actress. She has a great comic timing onscreen, which a very few actress can boast of, indeed apart from Sridevi and Madhuri, I never saw any actress being so good at comedies barring Kajol. She also made successful come backs unlike actress like Aishwarya, when she had few offers.

I think this forum underestimates Kajol as an actress, if Deepika, Alia and actresses like kareena can be hailed as good, Kajol has done everything the former actresses did and Kajol did all these when industry never wrote female centric movies.

Tabu definitely is the best actress of that generation, she is still so good onscreen, it is great that she never ran out of film offers.

Kajol is my favorite actress from the 90s. I know a lot of people who loved her. Also, I don't think Kajol ever went out of her way to take away some one else's role with the help of Dharma/YRF as Alia has. If anything, Kajol has declined numerous roles that went to other actresses who ended up benefiting.

Tabu was a good actress no doubt but she didn't come across as a young girl imo. She always felt mature, so couldnt do roles where the girl had to be young, confused, and delicate.

Kajol was a good actress in the 90s, she was honest and never really felt fake. I feel like she's been rusty now and that ends up her being too loud for her characters, like Dilwale.
