It's saddening to see the disrespect that Indian female stars get for the movies that they were and are in.

Kajol srk johar all started out together. How is it that now 25 years later the successful male is given sole credit for movies that ppl loved him in when he started acting. Was srk mega successful back when he started?

Srk has done movies with juhi, aish, madhuri all at their prime and ppl do like them but majority of people love him with kajol.

My 1st movie of kajol was KKHH. What I liked about her in That movie and her subsequent movies was that she looked ordinary. She looked like the girl next door. She did not have perfect straight hair, she was not super thin, her face was not perfect, she was dusky and she was not fair and she was never dressed in super sexy clothes in most of her movies. Her appeal back that was that she was the opposite of the karisma the madhuri and even the rani's.

You took away the perfect looks and u watched her face and she was just naturally and effortless in every single one of her movies. Yes a few movies she did over act but the majority of her movies her acting was perfection. The only problem with this girl was that at the height of her career she decides go marry that ajay and stay at home when she could have explored her talent more.

You can go anyway in the world and ppl will know kajol and srk. But I dnt think that the same can be said about his other pairings.

And please ppl who are comparing kajol and alia must be smoking weed. I wish I was on my laptop I would have shared a few pic of kajol when she was young and compared it to alia. Kajol is 10 times better looking then alia. If anything I now think that kajol's looks were darn under rated when she was young.

Still better than Deepika.

If there were better actresses than Kajol in her time like Urmilla, Tabu and Manisha, then there were better actresses than Deepika in her time too like Vidya, Konkona and Radhika.

kajol was the star of 90’s . Her acting was inline with her time . Both men and women kind of did OTT acting .

As of kajol not giving hits now ... let’s be fair , current crop Deepika , Alia , kangana , vidya even SRK and sometimes salman and Aamir are also struggling to get a HIT. Some of these have not seen the face of HIt in their hey days even if it’s multi starrer.

Tabu is lucky to be in some good movies , her current movies are doing well than it ever did in her prime age. But, she is far from selling a movie rather she brings so much value to roles she is doing ... there by enhancing the movie watching experience.

I am 90’s teen . Urmila was never tagged as good actress back then , manisha was called Meryl Streep of Bollywood but a lot of flops . It’s Kajol who made it to Number 1 in her prime .

There is nothing great in being ahead of one’s time and be called decades later as underrated... serves no purpose.

most of the disrespect comes from women . I am no fan of kajol . Yes , she did overact but so did others male/female alike of those times .

every woman including madhuri , sridevi are overrated except their current favorite actress.

Which current actress actually sells tickets only on her name ? Even Kajol in her time did although not in Sri/Mads capacity.

Those who're saying SRK and Kajol started together... no. SRK was already a superstar by DDLJ. Adi Chopra got SRK to sign on because of this. Kajol still wasn't a superstar until KKHH happened. She and Dharma basically piggybacked on SRK.

Kajol was a below average to average actress depending on script and director. But she was promoted as the thinking man's actress. She, a high school dropout whose reading material contained only Mills & Boons by her own admission. She even appeared on the cover of Competition Success.

Her rise was KJo's doing. Dharma wasn't as big then as it is now, so he is able to do much more for Alia.

That being said, it isn't fair to compare Kajol to Tabu who is a rare gem. I mean it's like comparing Abhishekh Bachchan (not a terrible actor but not the greatest) to Rajkumar Rao. Kajol may reasonably be compared to Karisma. Karisma made it in large part due to her own hard work and partly with help from her family's connections. Kajol was handed things on a platter. And it shows in their behavior even now. Whatever else might be said about Karisma, she is humble about her time in Bollywood. Not so Kajol who seems to be under the delusion she is extra special.

SRK was NOT a "superstar" when DDLJ happened.

There were no superstars in 1994-1995. SRK, Aamir, Salman were still emerging. Even Govinda, Sunil, Akshay, Ajay ..... all of them were in the same bracket and the directors often interchanged one with another when one rejected an offer.

Pretty sure, at one point, even a then-nobody Saif was considered for DDLJ.

SRK had not done even done a full rom-com until DDLJ. His critical acclaim was with negative/grey characters in films like Baazigar, Anjaam and Darr.

Yes, Darr! which YASH CHOPRA DIRECTED and catapulted SRK's fame and that's why Aditya signed SRK, not because SRK had become some sort of superstar.

The audiences didn't even know what to expec from DDLJ. SRK deserves all the credit he gets for DDLJ, but DDLJ's success wasn't his alone.

Direction, Music, Cinematography, Story and even supporting cast had SOLID contribution to the film's success.

If short-skirts are derogatory, then I'm pretty sure I've seen Tabu wearing shorts in some of her early 90s films. But I won't do use that as an argument because I do not find it derogatory, specifically when it is used as an argument to undermine one's credibility/character/talent.

OK i mean she was not offered teenage hert throbe kind of roles like kajol/jkarishma were in 90s

Kajol has delivered big hits with all three Khans, she played negative characters and characters that were required to do more than dancing and look glamorous onscreen. Her pairing with SRK just over shadows her individual success as an actress. She has a great comic timing onscreen, which a very few actress can boast of, indeed apart from Sridevi and Madhuri, I never saw any actress being so good at comedies barring Kajol. She also made successful come backs unlike actress like Aishwarya, when she had few offers.

I think this forum underestimates Kajol as an actress, if Deepika, Alia and actresses like kareena can be hailed as good, Kajol has done everything the former actresses did and Kajol did all these when industry never wrote female centric movies.

Tabu definitely is the best actress of that generation, she is still so good onscreen, it is great that she never ran out of film offers.

kajol was not good at comedy she used to do horrible faces in name of comedy

the best comedy was juhi and sridevi and than raveena and karishma in actress

Manisha koirala got more heroine oriented roles like bombay, dil se, kamoshi, 1942 love story than kajol in intial phase

sridevi, madhuri, manisha, tabu, urmila over shadowed kajol in 90s in good roles and women oriented roles

kajol was bad in gupt too author backed role, she was screeching and manisha chewed her up whenever on screen together

Indeedin gupt all side charcater side better acting than kajol om puri, sadashiv amrakpur etc all policemen and politicians basically

If you compare Kajol to those three than she was behind. But if you compare her to the flows pots like the Raveena or Twinkle and a lot of other 90s actresses she was ahead. The point being it was a time when art cinema and commercial cinema had not found a healthy balance the way they have today. Romantic roles and musicals were the some of the most meaty roles a lot of commercial actresses could get. Still Kajol did try to got out of the box to the extent that she could with Gupt and Dushman. Even if you looks at some of Madhuri's most memorable films they were romantic musicals like Beta, Dil, HAHK, DTPH and Ram Lakhan she was the romantic angle only. So can't single out Kajol. Yes, the three you mentioned really made an effort to go out of the box with limited opportunities. But none received a whole lot of commercial success that was a compromise they made because they had different ambitions.
