Arjun- A guy who loved his sister from day one of the show. Who cannot see even a single drop of tear in her eyes, remember that loving and caring Arjun from the episode when Naina's mood was off as she was punished in school. Arjun an obedient kid, who helped a lady get down the bus when his father was busy arguing with other passengers. Eventually we came to know overtime that this poor chap was immensely pressurized by his own dad to achieve trophies in order to boost his ego. This is the time when as audience I started connecting with this poor kid on an emotional level.
Then the headboy competition happened and we came to know a flaw of this teenager. We came to know that he cheated during the competition which is ethically incorrect. But when we saw that his father doesn't even let the guy breathe, we started sympathizing with him. Yes we were angry as audience that how can a person lie to such an extent that the matter is still under the wraps till date. But still I saw a teenager in him who lies just like all of us and hence we were a bit hopeful that he is not that bad, just another teenager who will own up to his mistakes someday.

Then enters Shefali in his life- a headstrong girl with guts to learn and train in cricket along with the boys, during an era when teenage girls hardly even played gully cricket. Shefali a character who carries her own mind starts visiting Arjun's house on daily basis to teach Pralay. What did I as an audience notice?... I noticed a shy guy who feels socially awkward talking to girls, especially when they approach him openly (many guys I know have this problem). Now here is the point where I noticed that there are chances of a good love-story or at least strong friendship being developed soon between the two. And yes bang on! Friendship started developing between the two.

Now we all have always thought that why Arjun needs a Shefali type person in his life. She is the one who can develop some courage in this meek character, the one who can help him take a stand. But why does Shefali need Arjun?...Shefali has always been mocked or teased by boys for being bold and headstrong. She has always seen boys who come and talk to her because she is bold (meaning different from the lot) and hence think she is available. She might have also been many times seen in an inappropriate manner by boys. Some light has been put on this in the show. So now Arjun is the first guy in her life who doesn't look at her in an inappropriate manner. Not for a moment in any episode I have felt that Arjun in anyway has seen her or thought about her in a disrespectful way. Yes there was a time when he had raised some questions on her character. But after that he was even sorry about it. We always considered Naina as a shy person who won't express about her feelings easily to anyone. So a slightly different case was of Arjun. A shy person who lived in a cocoon and hardly interacted with any girl, thought the approach of Shefali to be a bit direct and hence he judged her. But eventually he apologized and hence the matter ended there and that to on a good note.

Then develops a friendly relation between the two. A relation where he is a strict coach to her but also an understanding friend. I remember getting some wonderful Shef-Jun scenes during the Mt Abu track which were laying the foundation of their relation. I also remember Arjun giving Shefali his share of food, when she didn't have anything to eat. Didn't we like Arjun there?

And then the bet revelation leading to Arjun-Sam fight. He is a possessive brother and I have already made a post on it in the past justifying his anger, which unfortunately now they are stretching it way too much. Don't know what are the makers thinking, but what I was disappointed with the most was during the whole illness of Arjun, they sort of lost track of Shefali-Arjun's friendship. The concentration was so much on Arjun's anger and Sameer-Naina's story, that in all this Shefali-Arjun's budding friendship was just eclipsed. In the whole 2 months we hardly get 2 scenes of Shefali-Arjun and that to of only 5 mins max. Sameer-Naina are the leads agreed, but after them the potential and interesting story was of She-Jun. If not the love angle then at least they would have continued with their friendship. Only one scene we get that too horribly dubbed where she apologizes for exposing him. Seriously?!

Arjun's character I'm sorry to say but is being assassinated day-by-day, we all can see that. Okay if they want to show him as an angry brother...fine, we will accept that, but at least don't show him to be a character who is growing to be so selfish and so self-centered that other than these traits we cannot see anything else of him. If he doesn't like Sam till date even that is acceptable, but atleast don't make him a person who has lost all the ability to think reasonably and straight. We know it sure shot that he is not a villain. His character was never of that a villain, please don't lose the essence of it. We all know that eventually in somedays Sameer-Arjun problem will be solved. But Naina is not the only relation he has, please don't revolve his life only around this. Sameer-Naina story is getting so much concentrated on him that all other relations of him are dying a slow death. His story was supposed to run parallel with Sameer-Naina, it was running successfully till December, I don't want it to be entwined with the leads and that to horribly.

As an audience I'm in dire need of a good relation and healthy scenes between Shef-Jun. Romantic angle woh baad ki baat hai, but atleast don't kill their friendship by not showing them at all. There are very few shows who show girl-boy friendship in a good and sensible way and YUDKBH was one of them.

PS: Yes I know they are trying to show that Arjun is behaving like his father, and all the flaws in his character are because of him, but still I expect there are better ways to show it rather than stretching things like a chewing-gum. Show him as flawed, please don't make him a polished just-out-of-a-90s-movie villain!

PS: This is my thought-process about the current graph of Arjun's character. This is completely my POV. I still love YUDKBH just like you all. Hope I haven't offended anyone Let me know your views on this.

Totally agree! I think the Pooja shaadi track especially has shifted a bit much to a Samaina-only focus, with the result that the essence of the other characters are getting lost.

Sadly, Arjun, in an effort to please paapa, is shaping up as Jr. Rakesh. Shefali would have been the one person who could have pointed this out to Arjun. Shefali though hasn't spoken to Arjun at all in days :(

There were already reasons enough for Rakesh and Arjun to not accept Sameer for Naina. The whole Rakesh pouring coffee on Sameer and being asked to apologize etc. just to paint Arjun as the villain to the Samaina love story did not work much for me either.

I really liked how you analyzed Arjun's character graph individual as well as his equation with shefali. I had been thinking since many days about this equation between the two. They were very friendly and due to father's pressure, Arjun happened to blast on shefali after which Arjun had an accident and then their story went stand still. In fact , because cvs wanted to bring sameer-Arjun angle so much that they made shefali sameer's friend in order to sort out Arjun. After having some fun and friendly moments, some emotional too where they understood each other , arjun never felt the urge of talking to shefali to sort out differences. Right now the focus is on arjun as an obstacle between sameer-Naina and hence arjun-shefali are where they were couple of months back or may I say they don't even look friends anymore. I think , the CVs are excelling in sameer and naina's Story and that's why I am so pleased with the show but I really would like to see shefali and Arjun a little too. They do have a scope. I was feeling earlier when he coached her cricket that while sameer Naina will fight odds to get together , Arjun -shefali even after being in love will be an incomplete love story due to arjun's Basic characteristics of falling to pressure. Let's see how the story proceeds.

I agree with most of your points here Z!! I was initially very fond of this meek, good at heart guy. I totally agreed with his anger on Sameer...which elder bro would take it lightly that some guy played with his sister's feelings...he would feel Sameer used her to satiate his ego. And I also agree with you on the Shejun scenes. But now- No. I'm getting less fond of Arjun day by day. To the point that yesterday I felt that Shefali can do better than this.
Arjun stole the exam papers n yet pleaded with Naina to keep it a secret, coz his dad's dreams will crash. He also says he didn't know what got over him to take such a step. We saw regret there. But yesterday, the way he incited his dad to have a go at Sameer...he reminded him that Sameer stole the papers during the headboy competition. He lied through his teeth n was damn cool about it. I can totally understand that he still hasn't forgiven Sameer n is still livid with him. But yesterday he showed no guilt for what he had done. I am constantly getting reminded of a character sketch Dr. Don had done once. He explicity mentioned that from the point of view of a boy, he can say that Arjun is turning like his father. I differed on this point n told him that no, the guy is good at heart n Shefali will definitely bring out the change in him. But these days, I feel that Arjun is a bheegi billi in front of his dad n family, but a sher in front of Sameer. Sameer is only tolerating him for Naina's sake. He knows he has to be polite to his saala. He could walk, yet again he pleaded with Naina to keep it a secret. I was like eww man! Pathetic! And then, in the shaadi the father son duo are acting completely in league. Yesterday I gave up on Arjun n I'm no longer keen on Shejun too. Maybe Rohan n Shefali maybe a good pair. Maybe even Pandit once he matures a bit. I guess out of trio, he's still not mature.

I hope there is some kind of redemption for Arjun.
His character and his equation with Shefali is something I really enjoyed. Day by day he is becoming like his father.

I am remembering Percy-Dumbledore here. I don't know why.

"Dumbledore says people find it far easier to forgive other for being wrong than for being right."

Somehow I feel this is applying to Arjun as well. He is not able to see Sameer eye to eye because he knows he is wrong and Sameer is right.
Especially during the wedding track, Arjun was left wanting of some character in the wake of Sameer's personality. First, Naina compared him to Sameer, and said "Not every one runs from their problems".
Both Sameer and Arjun have made mistakes. The difference is that Sameer owned up to his and took corrective actions.

And during the photo-quarrel, Arjun's solution was to bully. Sameer was diplomatic.

Bullies are always insecure.

Lovely post Zulu. I loved Arjun a lot during the initial days and I was so excited for ShefJun. There is so much to tell in their story. I wish Shefali was shown during his wheelchair dats. Their could have been bonding between them and a good friendship turning into something.

He is being a good brother, I agree on that but he is plain jealous of Sameer. That is what they have shown him from his wheel chair days especially after Naina compared the two of them. He cant stand Sameer because he knows Sameer has been successful and he the opposite. He is like a sheep in wolf's clothing - keeping the elder brother picture out but inside it is more than that.
He is also concerned probably for Naina that if the family came to know then Naina would have problems. So, he is trying to keep Sameer away.

The CVs are dealing with only parental pressure and oldee brother wrt Arjun..

Nice topic KZ. 😊
To me Arjun-Shefali never took off from first base. 😕 Arjun is too weak a character... and not just now. I'm talking from the very first shot... from the moment he got down from the bus I saw him bed down to his father's wishes...

He has never taken a stance for himself... even a simple matter of what he wanted to eat! Rakesh refused dinner at chachi because he didn't want tinde and ordered ARjun who then left his plate full of food and followed meekly... at he same time chachi asked Naina and she sat put stating she will eat becaseu she loved tinde... to me that scene defined the two siblings... that was the day I wrote if Arjun is not careful he will turn into another Rakesh and now we see that...

Next was Meghaben incident...we all saw how he behaved upon spotting that poor girl, as he scared of Taiji...he made false excuses and escaped from Shefali then... his non-support of Shefali when the other guys teased...

Arjun's list can go on... the biggest, and this is a crime punishable by law, was stealing the papers... yes, he felt guilty of a day or two and the moment he convinced Naina he also convinced himself that it was the right thing to do... and now he has made that his reality. he has no qualms blaming Sameer even today... if he was truly guilty he would not be able to see Sameer in the eye... he should have stopped the cricket ban punishment...

And this time when the accident happened he conveniently blamed Sameer... ti was not for the accident but to take revenge for Naina... even if that was justified to certain extent, his subsequent behavior and treatment of Sameer when he was helping is not... and once again trying to shift the blame on Sameer... only this time he was out-smarted.

Sorry, but to me his only redeeming quality is his love for Naina... which now seems to be overtaken by his false, bloated ego, as he is unable to understand her happiness. I feel Naina will only tolerate so much... until now she has not spoken against her father, but she has no such fear of Arjun... if he goes overboard, he will have to face her wrath!

Arjun has been acting since age of 3 as he said in an interview . There is lot of potential in him that can be shown .
Also Shefali is side lined , not even given importance as much as swati also .

Every serial has leads , but other characters need to be given enough footage .

Arjun & shefali seems to be a bit detached on & off screen , which is not good for serial as a whole.

valentine segments must have got all sameer naina swati, preeti munna pandit arjun shefali in the program as they all complete the sow.

They were probably in matheran last weekend ...roaming in jungle...

Arjun has always been a weak person.

I had sincerely hoped that Shefali's friendship would put some strength in him to stand up for what is right but unfortunately it did not happen.

He growth chart is unfortunately in the wrong direction.

If you see right from the beginning, he hardly has any friends. He does not have his own opinions on any matter and his father's opinions are his.
He only looks at the world through his father's eyes.

Be it paper stealing or lying about the accident or his recovery, he has almost done all wrong things to get what he wants or defend himself and his false ego.

I am just wondering if CVs would show his redemption before the leap or later.

With this kind of attitude, he will not go much ahead in life. I hope he learns his lesson before his life gets ruined completely.
