Can't say. She was a superstar in her time. But Madhubala, Meenakumari are much bigger icons of bollywood.

Aree I never said madhuri is not recognizable ofcourse she is a big actress of her time😆 I am saying ky atleast in my childhood from what i have witnessed i have always seen people going crazy for Kareena and Kat so us basis py i called them bigger stars than MD😆 Basically every generation has their own Superstars and humare Time py it was Salman/SRK and Kareena/Kat. Anyways this one question will never end. Madhuri might be the biggest actress of her time just like how Bebo/Kat were😊 But i am biased towards my Bebo so i will always call her as the Biggest actress ever😳 Even in Forbes first ever indian list Kareena was the highest ranked actress on no.7 with highest earning so is basis py hui na biggest star of her time☺️

NP die hard Ranbir & Madhuri fan 😉 who else are you a die hard fan of? Btw what a post, even though it may look biassed!! I dont know much about that era history, but Madhuri is one of the biggest stars. She is still remembered, loved, talked about & praised even today!! I think she looks more appealing from that generation, & she had the talent too!!

NP... you know I love you. 😳 And the topic by definition is troll worthy... the answer is loud and clear... she is ONE, but not the BIGGEST. We can agree to disagree.😆

However.. all the insights on Sri's career is off the mark... be it timelines or the yardstick you're using to compare them. 😳

As a Sri bhakt, had to add a few things here:

Breakthough years:

Madhuri debuted in '84 and was unknown until Ek Do Teen happened. ~10 films before Tezaab!!! 😲 Itna lamba time kyun?? Why couldn't she topple Sri in those years '84 to '87?? 😉 Why weren't makers running after her??

Sri entered Bolly in '83 with a critical acclaimed Sadma and her many blockbusters that year with Jeetendra. Her iconic "Nainon Mein Sapna" is from that debut film.

Right then she bagged the Best Actress Filmfare nomination (lost to Shabana in Arth) that year. ⭐️

'84 to '87 Sri enjoyed a dream run commercially... with leading roles. Sad Filmfare wasn't held in '86 and '87... she lost her two best actress back to back wins (Nagina and Mr. India). Filmfare gave her a special award in 2013 for that loss and honor those two leading performances. ⭐️ Who has ever gotten retro active awards? 😆

Competition was always there... but they just couldn't stand in front of her. She had all the commercial success with big roles. Directors just wanted her...

Another example of her superstardom... this is '85... Feroz Khan was dying to get her even for a little bit in Janbaaz ('86)... so impactful was her song (Har Kisi Ko) and two scenes (one where she dies of drug overdose... watch the entire sequence) ,,,, that she OVERSHADOWED the actual heroine Dimple Kapadia who stripped and had the heroine role too. ⭐️

Madhuri hit the limelight with her Ek Do Teen number... but it was Anil who won the Best Actor award. Madhuri didn't topple Rekha (Khoon Bhari Maang) that year, for example? 😆

1989...

Sridevi - UNDISPUTED QUEEN... with Chandni and Chaalbaaz amongst her other release. Filmfare Best Actress. ⭐️

Madhuri - Ram Lakhan , Tridev (big successes... but not because of her 😳) ... rest??

1990

Sridevi - OFF year. but TELUGU: ATBLOCKBUSTER with Chiranjeevi in a show stealing role ⭐️

Madhuri - Dil. Big success... good performance in a NO COMPETITION year.

1991

Madhuri - Saajan. Big success

Sridevi -

Lamhe... commercially flop, but wins Best Film and Best Actress at Filmfare. Madhuri kyun nahin topple kari??? 😉 . Same year Telugu... A blockbuster Telugu film with RGV. (Kshana Kshanam)... and wins Best Actress there too. ⭐️

1992

Madhuri - Beta (Biggest success). Best Actress (big scandal later about how Anil/Madhuri where the final choices over BigB/Aamir/Sridevi that year)

Sridevi - Khuda Gawah (Big success with a critical accalim role opposite Big B... which actress played a double role on equal fitting opposite BigB in those days??? ⭐️)

1993

Madhuri - Khalnayak (Big success... great job with Choli Ke Peeche... but its Sanjay who did most of the acting)

Sridevi - Gumrah (Average ... but a critical acclaim show stealing role)

Juhi won the best actress and was the Queen of 1993. Madhuri kyun nahin topple ki??? 😳

1994

Madhuri - HAHK (ATBB... good performance and can see why it won) ⭐️

Sridevi - Laadla (HIT... critical acclaim in a show stealing role)

1995

Madhuri - Raja (Big success) ...but Yaarana ko kyun nahin bacha paayi???

Kajol with a ATBB and Best Actress win. Madhui kyun nahin topple kari??? 😳

1996

Madhuri - All flops.

Sridevi - Flops

Karisma is the queen of the year. Madhui kyun nahin topple kari??? ⭐️

1997

Madhuri - DTPH (Biggest success... again questionable best actress win for this role)... Mrityudand (flop but critical acclaim, worthy win though)

Sridevi - Judaai (Super hit... with critical acclaim show stealing role)

And then Sri got married and decided to raise a family.

1998 - Kajol year

1999 - Ash year

2000 - Karisma / Tabu year

2001 - Kajol/ Tabu year

2002 - Ash / Rani year

So Madhuri's real peak was 1994... and she didn't rule BO like a boss between 1987 - 97 😳

I don't dislike her... Madhuri is a great all rounder commercial actress. I love her voice and delivery too. I preferred her more in dramatic roles like Mrityudand, Lajja and Devdas. It's just that in their active years... I connected more to Sridevi's performances. 😳

I've no qualms in admitting that Madhuri was the better dancer while Sridevi was the better actress. 😆 This doesn't mean that the ladies weren't super in the other when assessed standalone.

In some way... I'm like you with actresses. I gravitate towards "natural" performers.. I can separate a natural actress with an actress who got superlative with "training/experience".

Other actresses who I've consistently admired for their chops in random order.

Vidya, Kajol, Rani, Tabu, Shabana, Smita, Jaya, Rekha, Rakhee, Nutan, Waheeda...

In the current younger lot, Alia is decent while I find Parineeti a more natural performer. Simply loved her in LVRB and Ishaqzaade. She just needs to find her groove back.

I loved Swara recently in AOA. Another lady, with great dialogue delivery.

Same here. I too prefer Madz in dramatic roles. Mrityudand is the finest performance of her career. Sad tha she didn't win NA. 😒

Your list is great. Pretty much similar to me. Minus Rakhee! And I'd replace Rekha with Meena Kumari & Nutan with Konkona. BTW, whats your opinion on Nargis Dutt? I mean I've seen some of her most acclaimed performances, she's good but not THAT great as she's made out to be.

Kalki, Radhika, Richa, Swara they're doing a fab job as well.

Anyways, last question whom do you consider as the greatest actress ever (just in terms of pure acting talent).

My top 3 would be Tabu, Smita and Shabana. 😛
