SRK is as enthusiastic and fun-loving as he was'

Deepika Deshpande Amin, who was part of Barry John's theatre group with Shah Rukh Khan reunites with the superstar on screen

Chaya Unnikrishnan

Fifteen years after they worked together in Barry John's theatre group, Deepika Deshpande Amin and Shah Rukh Khan are reuniting in the upcoming Fan. This will be the first time the duo will be seen together on screen. Says Deepika, "We did theatre together for seven-eight years and travelled all over India staging plays in various cities like Kolkata, Jaipur, Guwahati etc. So, I have known him for a long time." Ask her if Shah Rukh has changed in any way and she smiles, "The most wonderful thing about him is he has not changed at all. After so many years and such great success, he is still enthusiastic and fun-loving. It's like being back in the theatre group, all the years in between melted away."

Ask her how she landed up playing mother to SRK and she says, "Initially, I was surprised, as I am not old enough to play his mom. In fact, we are contemporaries " he may be a couple of years older to me! But the makers assured me that I was playing mom to the Shah Rukh who plays the fan Gaurav and that with special effects and prosthetic he will look younger. And, it's incredible how young he looks " like he is in his 20s! Also, I play a strong-willed woman, who is an important factor in the fan's life. She is not a mother who is just flitting around."

The actress is all praise for the younger lot of directors who are looking at theatre artistes to play important characters. "Even the minor character is given a lot of attention. Production houses like Dharma and Yash Raj Films are looking for performers and not the standard typical filmi types," she says happily.

Though Deepika has recently forayed into films with Raanjhanna (as Sonam Kapoor's mother) and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya (as Alia Bhatt's mom) she has been a regular on the theatre and television circuit. She did her first serial Farmaan opposite Kanwaljeet back in the '90s when the only channel available was Doordarshan. After a few more serials like Junoon, 9 Malabar Hill etc, Deepika recently returned to TV with Siyasat and Tashan-E-Ishq. She says, "TV has really changed. The era of daily soaps has made things hectic. Earlier, serials ended when the story ended. For instance Farmaan was based on a book Jahaapanah and it ended with the hero and heroine living happily ever after. Now, the serials are endlessly dragged. In the rush to get an episode ready for telecast there is a drop in quality. If one week the serial doesn't get ratings, the story is changed the next week. It is unbelievable and unrealistic."

Currently seen in Tashn-e-Ishq, Deepika says she deliberately doesn't take up roles that require too much of her time. She is part of severla plays like Wedding Album and Boiled Beans On Toast that are staged alternatively. As for films she has recently shot for Dil Jo Na Keha Saka with a bunch of newcomers. "I also have an international film in the pipeline. I have kept my fingers crossed," she signs off.

I was wondering where I had seen her. Now I remember she was the heroine of Farmaan. What a Mills and Boons story it was. I used to love that show. Kanwaljeet was so handsome in that.

SRK in Fan: simpleton, anti-hero, lover, superstar, all in one

Fan promo made everyone curious about how distinctly Shah Rukh Khan would essay both roles.

There's a superstar. And there's a fan. The very purpose of the latter's existence is his matinee idol. He lives and breathes this star. He even looks like him.

When the first promo of Shah Rukh Khan's latest film, Fan to be released on Friday, was shown, the audience appreciated the work done on the character of the fan to make him look different, and much younger than the superstar. But then it was largely dismissed as the Bollywood Badshah's latest megalomaniac move: the fan celebrates the superstar who in turn is modelled on Khan.

The audience is also curious about this latest Khan offering. The film is directed by Maneesh Sharma, who gave the industry Ranveer Singh with Band Baajaa Baarat; he wouldn't do a blatant PR job, right?

The second trailer of the film gave a glimpse into how a shunned fan can be as dangerous as a wronged lover. The fan, dismissed by his idol, turns against him, transforming the superstar's dream-like life into a nightmare.

The promo made everyone curious about how distinctly Shah Rukh Khan would essay both roles: would he be able to pull off what Kangana Ranaut had with her double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns by playing two characters from very different backgrounds?

Everyone is also excited to see the return of Shah Rukh Khan, the anti-hero. The actor, who had charmed audiences in the earliest part of his career with his endearing simpleton act in Chamatkar and in the first half of Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, had established his position as an actor with negative roles in Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam, before becoming Bollywood's favourite romantic lead with Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

In the years that followed, he did attempt films such as Ram Jaane and Trimurti but the audience had come to love him as Raj, the loverboy and he had to keep returning in the avatar for the audience to keep loving him: Dil Se, Swades, Paheli and Chak De...India, were all critically acclaimed but didn't have the same box-office impact as the ones where he loved his girl and his family"Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Na Ho.

He went on to become the superstar and Badshah of Bollywood when films starring him would fetch him the blockbuster status, never mind the content, be it Ra.One, Chennai Express or Happy New Year. All SRK needed to do was furrow his brow, shed a tear for his love or serenade the lady by spreading out his arms, and the audience went bersek. So much so that DDLJ had a grand silver jubilee celebration last year.

However, the (relative) failure of Dilwale last year, was indication enough that his fans - most of whom belong to the family audience' category - had begun to tire of the formula. They have begun to hope that their favourite superstar would reinvent and somehow redeem himself.

And Fan's new trailer makes them believe it might be the film to do just that.

Little do they realise that Shah Rukh Khan isn't quite reinventing himself over here but merely reinventing the wheel. He isn't attempting anything new or even attempting to repeat the same old trick that got him his first flush of fame. In Fan, he plays the fan as a simpleton who is also the anti-hero, while the character of the superstar serenades the girls and also represents a larger than life figure, like Khan himself. In this film he brings together all the strands of his career and threads them together in one film.

Fan, if one looked closely, is a film where Shah Rukh Khan " the man who taught Bollywood to sell anything and everything from washing detergents to luxury watches - is the sum of all the parts he has played so far in his 25-year-long career.

  • Fan might be SRK's biggest hit: Vivek Vaswani
  • [ - ] Text [ + ]
9:48 HRS IST

Mumbai, Apr 14 (PTI) Having known Shah Rukh Khan for over 25 years, Bollywood producer Vivek Vaswani feels if the superstar's upcoming "Fan" hits the right chord, it might become the biggest hit of his career.

Vaswani, who produced Shah Rukh's "Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman" and "Josh", hopes that the charm of the actor's earlier films is back with his drama-thriller.

"I hope the old Shah Rukh Khan is back (with 'Fan'). I don't know on which holiday he went after 'Ra.One'. We want to see the old Shah Rukh of 'Raju Ban Gaya'... 'Darr'," Vaswani told PTI.

Directed by Maneesh Sharma, "Fan" features the 50-year-old actor in a dual role- that of a superstar and his look-alike fan.

Vaswani, who lived with the "Chennai Express" star when he was an aspiring actor in Mumbai, feels the movie can turn either way depending on how good the content is.

"See, if Shah Rukh pulls it off then nothing like it. I have a friend who watches films first day first show and tells me a good analysis of how the film will do, business and the audience reaction wise. So if people of his generation is disappointed with the film then it won't work," he said.

"But if they are not, then it will be the biggest hit of his career. It'll go either this way or that way. The trailer is good. Everyone is keenly awaiting the new Shah Rukh, including Shah Rukh himself," he added.

Even though he has produced films starring Shah Rukh and shares a good bond with the "Dilwale" actor, Vaswani has no intentions of directing a film with him.

"I don't have the financial stability to direct films. It is a completely different ball game today. I am very much happy helping my friends, acting as consultant for movies.

"I gave three back to back hits in the 90s and I am content with that. Till this date people thank me for 'Raju Ban Gaya..' Even Shah Rukh. But I never intend to make films."

Vaswani will be seen in a cameo role in filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri's next, "Buddha In A Traffic Jam".

"Fan" releases tomorrow.
