It is not a fact unknown to me growing up in a conservative Brahmin family that hair is kept untied only by widows.
Hair has to be tied both by young girls as well as married woman. Yes another custom the rebel in me had questioned and the answer I got was untied hair causes war, disruption to the peace in the family and have even got scolding from elders telling dont be Panchali.

Today Sunaina told beautifully what the tied hair really imply. If you look hair is one of the prized possession of any woman. Yes today we cut our hair very short, still if you ask me while grooming where I spend the maximum time my answer will be hair. Perfectly combed, tied and decorated hair with flowers is pleasing in any woman. We have to admit long tresses do give woman a beauty. The poets have never stopped singing about the hair. The classic one being the song from Alaipayuthe whose lyrics goes like this " Iravin nirame, iravin nirame, karkala pennotha nirame, kakkai chirakkil nirame, pennai ezhuthum mayin nirame, veyil padum kuyilin nirame, ellam serthnu un kundal nirame( Transalation: The color of night, the color of crow's wings, the color of eyeliner, the color of singing cuckoo together brings the colour of your hair). Hair is a woman's pride and symbol of feminity and a man's desire.

And the hair tied in a woman means she belongs to someone else. The beauty of her hair is only to be enjoyed by the spouse and not by anyone else. It also represented a woman who felt secure and protected in her maayka as well as the marital home.

Her untied hair does not bring war. But it is a warning to the man to do his duty. To protect her. She is not feeling safe, secure. When MB aired in Starplus many were complaining Panchali was shown too feminists because she disowns her husband. Many were mocking does Panchali wants divorce.
Starplus MB had to give dialogues because people didnt understand ancient customs. Panchali had disowned her husbands the moment she let her hair lose and took the pledge unless it is washed by her tormentor's blood she wont tie it. To the husbands who stood mute while she was dragged and being disrobed in the court, she was asking to prove themselves as her husbands. And she wont accept them till they bring her tormentor's blood.

And if you look Sita also sends her hair ornament through Hanuman. It was her way of reminding Ram of his duty. Her protection. Ravan drags Sita by hair as symbol of his power and as a symbol of owning her.

Every ancient custom has a reason. They were kept for restraint, they were kept for understanding the changed status, they were symbols of love, of hatred and without telling people understood their rights and duties then.

So if a man wants his wife to have her hair tied, want to do shringaar of her hair, then he has to keep her happy, secure and protected. No point giving her order to tie her hair 😃

True Said
yes I have read those lines about Panchali when Star aired the MB
I still want to know what is wrong has done by Panchali She dragged by her hair she insulted humiliated n her 5 husband stood there no one protested in the name of their dharma
What about saving Wife ...
I heard same about don't open hair before wedding ...I was like kyuon.
so can understand it...
Sita Today tied her hair n when she asked its gife as Binding but her mother said nope its changing ..Sita will be married woman..
Her lover husband will only have the privilege to see her open hair... No-one else but Ravan crossed that limit ...
u give perfect example of Sita sending hairpin through Hanuman to Ram n its reminder to do the duty n protect n save Sita..

Agree with u Our Ancient time n Mythology has reason n many thing to learn

Exactly Krishna. How should a woman behave when her so called husbands stand mute watching her getting disrobed publicily and that she was forced to call a third party Krishna for help. Didnt she had right of self protection. Didnt she had emotions. Didnt she had the right to feel angry towards her husband. Or people except women to be serial bahus who suffer like doormat anything thrown at them and then when the abusive husband say sorry cozy up.
Our mythological woman were not like that. They expected and demanded action in their own way. They didnt cozy up and they didnt take anything thrown at them in the name of sanskaar. And that includes Sita.

Shruthi exactly...
Today's Society forget the Mythology how Those women lived with dignity n they interpret or can say misinterpret n use it with their own way...
example Lakshman Rekha crossed oh giving other warning don't cross Lakshman rekha what does it mean
Agni Pariksha , Abandon but not know full story just interpret with their own way
Serial bahu yes it has huge influence on them...
they tagged if woman will take everything thing then she is idea if she protest for her respect dignity then no...
GOD also said its wrong to take everything bad thing n its more sinner thing but...
everything now days misinterpret like Feminism what is exactly Feminism
Draupadi n Sita both r Feminist but todays world interpret this also wrong way...
they r dignified their has self respect their fight for their dignity but with grace ..
Today Feminism means revolt against any thing or everything
Today Ideal woman mean take every thing be it good or bad...
Every definition change as per own convenience

Beautiful Shruthi!
Your post also reminds me of the cruel custom of forcing widows to shave their hair, because hair is inetgral to a woman's beauty.

The most beautiful line for me was when Sita says it's the first time I'm being gifted a bandhan and Sunayana replies - don't take it as a bandhan, take it as a change, and always accept change.

The problem is confused and unknown views of our tradition ..today being feminist means being violent and reluctant over each and every thing (in terms of worship /shringar/riti riwaaz)
May be I also belong to above group ...
But what can we do the upcoming generations and this generation are just being taught about our different. Characters of Indian mythology but what is wrong what is right is self chosen ..the wrong way of informing leads to wrong way of deciding

And about revolt I think where we are facing physical violence there is no harm to being revolutionaries ...

But women are disapproving every single things in their personal life that's not good

Problem is more with our interpretation ..We r confuse cause we misinterpret certain things n with ...
Feminism is good but bringing the definition of Feminism to ignore avoid n against of all good things in the name of feminism bad...
exactly wrong way informing n more wrong way understand we have to understand our root our mythology our history ...

we have to protest against wrong.. be it physical or mental violence... if anyone causing physical or mental violence then need to be protest n that I also said always

like A feminist but that doesn't means always will make men wrong always will try to prove a self right..
Feminism means with dignity fight for self respect n which thing men don't do feminism do
as u said I agree with ur last line n but be it women or men
both way 😳

Bang on post shruti
as there is nothing to left to say about ur post .

ur post are always...a landmark really..

and Sunaina---woow i personally didnt hear about her earlier even honestly i even dont know...that sita has a mother whose name is sunaina..

thanks to SKR for showing us the most untouched aspect of the ancient epic really..

coming back to the post yay Hair is something which is one of the most important element of Solah sringar---😊

There is an provarb in bengali''Je randhe se chul o badhe''

Which means a women who cooks also know to tie up hair''--this indicates that a women who can handle the kitchen very well can handle the household not only household but every field quite efficently..

Tie up hair means to maintain balance...in ur life.

Hair is always connected to women...strentgh it not only an important element of women life but also...it signifies her inner strenght...too...

So thank u..very much for explaining the importance of hair...👏⭐️
