Inspired by Shilpa Shetty, at least 1,200 Rakhi Sawant fans have filed an online petition against Sony Television, protesting Rakhi's character assassination by co-contestants in the Bigg Boss house.
Carol Gracias, Ravi Kissen and the now-ousted Amit Sadh have come under flak for abusing Sawant.
Earlier, UK media regulator Ofcom had received more than 40,000 complaints over the alleged racist attack against Shilpa Shetty by housemate Jade Goody on the British reality show, Celebrity Big Brother, aired by Channel 4.
The petition, filed on petitiononline.com, says the broadcaster, Sony, has edited parts in which Carol called Rakhi 'illiterate' and 'a slut'. The petition also states Sawant has been subjected to offensive comments from Amit, Ravi and Rahul Roy.
However, Sandeep Sickand, creative head of Sony, said he was not aware of any such petition. "It is an assumption that the edited material is against Rakhi Sawant. If we receive any such petition, our legal department will handle it," he said.
US-based website
The US-based website was created by an Indian, Diwya Shetty, last week. There are also references to Celebrity Big Brother, with respondents feeling a public uproar on this issue is equally justified.
Last Thursday, Rakhi was socially ostracised after all the housemates confronted her on the things she had said about them prior to her first eviction. Carol even offered to present Rakhi a pair of sharpening knives after Rakhi said she was contemplating suicide. Rakhi's mother had to step in and ask the channel to save her daughter from the rudeness of her housemates.
Abhishek Awasthi, Rakhi's fianc, told MiD DAY he had not seen the show for a long time and was not aware what was happening on it. "But if the fans have complained, there may be some truth in it," he said.
