Americans here do not understand some of the words in our thick accent.

They don't know 'ch', 'kh', etc.

You can not pronounce Chantey like you do in India. You would have to speak it to sound like 'shantey'. Ch is s for them in pronouciation.

Some words you have to adapt for them to understand you. And there is nothing copying or faking about it.

Exactly! It took me many years to say Last, Past, Fast in the American way instead of the British way as we learn in India. Took me many years to say Elevator instead of Lift, Apartment instead of flat, but now I got it finally. 😆 P as in Pheeter, thats how I have to spell my name to Americans on the phone, otherwise they wont understand at all.

Remember when PC couldn't stand him, and now she basically adores him. I loved watching their interviews together, she really likes his energt now. Ranveer is like that--it takes awhile to warm upto him but when you do---it's solid, done dealer, in it for life kind of a thing. 😆

Americans have different accents depending on which part of the country they are from. Different regions have very distinct accents. But then there are also accents that are European, Asian, Middle Eastern etc and those are very different than an American accent of a New Yorker or a Texan or a Bostonian.

Listening to Priyanka no American would ever think she was raised in the U.S. Her accent has always been a foreign accent. To anyone familiar with Indian English her accent was always very Indian. Not the stereotypical Abu from Simpsons but the more urban educated accent. Something like Raj or his sister Priya from Big Bang Theory.

If her character in Quantico is supposed to be a born and raised American then her natural accent wouldn't have been believable at all, regardless of what ethnicity her character is.

I'm from Australia, and one of my closest friends went to the USA to live with her boyfriend for a few months. She said until you try speaking like Americans they won't understand a thing you're saying. 😆 She came back speaking like them! I was like W*F what happened in a few months, she goes I had to give up my Aussie accent to speak like them to get my way around things. 😆😆 But aye, I can barely understand Americans that live here either.

But PC sounds so fake when she speaks in that accent, she only puts it on in concerts and when she goes overseas and stuff like at award functions. So off-putting.

What fake accent? 😕

All desis here in US have a fake accent. 😆...they try their best to copy American accent but for anyone who was born in India and grew up there its hard to forget Indian-English and adopt American English.
Im speaking from personal experience here. 😛
Only the desi kids born here have an American accent because they are hearing it right from birth. 😆

PC is trying to speak with American accent in the Quantico trailer but thats exactly how Indian immigrants here speak the language, in fact its better than how most NRIs speak the language. Ive heard much worse accents than that.

And I dont understand this Indian obsession with getting the perfect American accent...there are immigrants from all over the world in the USA, there are as many different accents here as there are countries in the world.
Theres millions of people here speaking English with Spanish accent, East European accent, Irish accent, Italian accent (fuggedaboutit 😆 and every other accent possible. So whats the problem in speaking with Indian-American accent? 😕

There is no such thing as America accent.

Accents in the states varies due to regions:

Valley girls, Boston's, Texan's, Alabama's, even Cuban in South Florida to the Mexicans in South Padre Island...

You say Didn't and they would reply you.. 'you mean din't right?'

You say kant (Indian way of pronouncing Can't) and they would say 'oh you mean kent (American way for Can't)

So yes you have to adapt it for them to understand you. Now people can call it copying but to me adapting things of the place you live is not what faking is.

Sigh, she keeps bringing up this Marathi accent thing

Is it super different when you speak in Hindi with Marathi as your base language?

My parents speak hindi fluently with Marathi as their mother-tongue, and it doesn't sound like they have an accent.

Well I was among those Indians who used to not like fake accent of people who have been in USA and UK. Now I take back all the accusations as this is not faking it. It's called adapting to your surrounding. Heck it has been 2 years and I take twice the time to get across my point to hardcore Americans which constitute a huge number clients for the company I work for, I do not want to represent my company badly although Americans don't mind it but my time gets wasted. I'm simply not interested in wasting that and affecting my overall productivity. Words like Record, status, etc in UK and U.S.A are pronounced so effing differently. In America lot of stress is given on the letter 'r'. I have slowly started learning the accent and if others call it fake I care two hoots about it. To hell with all the blabbering which goes around you for faking accents because once you come back to India it takes some time to adapt which is the word. And so I'm with Priyanka, she is speaking the way it should be, as the target majority audience is not the one calling you that you are faking it.
