What a great topic! And I totally agree with you. I was just thinking about this the other day how uninspiring todays actresses are. Only Shraddha Kapoor is beautiful but shes still struggling and it will her a bit longer to make it to a-list crew.
I think we were fine up until 2010...after Aishwarya and a host of others slowed down like Bipasha and a few others ...we were left with pretty average looking actresses...sure Priyanka, Katrina, Deepika are alright...but they are nothing compared to Aishwarya Rai or even a Sonali Bendre!
We are missing that one iconic beauty and I think that's why people hold on to Aishwarya as much as they do even today..., there hasn't really been anyone WOW after her. Although it may be hard to be better than her, there are many that can come close...but sadly I don't see anyone at the moment...and the few that had potential never made it (Dia Mira)
We really need better looking actreses...sometimes I think damn we have such HORRIBLE looking girls...I mean Anushka, Sonakshi, Parineeti, Alia...just look at them man...they have nothing WOW about them and they're so typical. Ive seen girls IN INDIA at the mall that look better than them!
Someone mentioned nepotism and that's true...Bollywood needs to start looking outwards...look at the people who are outsiders - Kangana, Chitrangda, Esha Gupta- they are all BEAUTIFUL and much more better looking than these sorry star kid girls 🤢

Hmm. I find them still pretty. A lot more relatably pretty. I like the current actresses quite a bit.

Well the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder really applies here. While I agree that the past had Madhuri, Aishwarya, or further back Madhubala and Nargis who I thought were/are stunning women it also had Sridevi and Manisha Koirala or Asha Parekh or Tanuja who while attractive were not in the same level as a Madhubala or an Aishwarya in my opinion.
In today's lot I do find Shradha, Deepika, Alia and Sonam pretty as in I find their features beautiful. Yes Sonam and Deepika don't look as glamorous without make up but their features are still attractive to me. Though I wish Sonam wouldn't try to hide her natural olive skin tone. By the same token I find Katrina average looking at best while the whole country seems to be gaga for her "stunning beauty". I don't see it.

I do however think the Internet and social media is making a difference in how we see today's heroines as oppose to past heroines. I have no idea what Madhuri or Madhubala looked like without make up at one in the morning while leaving their house. Today's girls run the risk of getting their picture taken by somebody or another the minute they step outside their homes.

i agree! Old isnt gold anymore

Based on how this entertainment scenario has changed worldwide, not just in Bolly;

Madhubala and Hema M are truly actress. Beauty is a must. Graceful bla bla..This is true as we saw them naturally beautiful in films (esp without the presence of HD technologies like nowadays ).

New generation actresses are celebrities. They need to feed rabid phans by the Series of IVs and show off their great persona for those phans and thus, the beauty and graceful on screen is not the most priority nowadays for actresses. As the technologies keep advancing, don't shock if in future everybody is a celebrity. With beauty or less beauty. Just be thankful nowadays they are still average people without make up. Blue ray really tell the true colour of their faces and skins. So make up and botox are needed to fight against this HD technology same as people craziness towards them.

People like to glorify the classic things due to our own good memories. 30 years from now Alia Bhat and co are considered classic by kids nowadays same as Hema Malini to us today. It will rotate on this cycle again and again with diff generation.

This is occurred to Holly too.

I agree. 80s/90s stars were all different looking and very pretty. Even with awful styling,makeup and costumes they looked pretty.

Urmila, Manisha Koirala, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Madhuri, Divya Bharati, Neelam, Sonali Bendre, Juhi Chawla,Sonam Rai,Aishwarya ,Ayesha Julka, Farah ,Kimi Katkar, Mahima Choudhary, Raveena Tandon, Jaya Prada, Tina Munim, Poonam Dhillon etc all were too beautiful and striking.

Think they are taller now. Mostly all 90s actresses were barely more than 5'4" while these days I think the average is like 5'6" now which is also they requirement for Ms India.

Yeah, they are taller than the puny 90s heroines. But still not Lara-Sush-Bips-Kat-DP-Sonam tall.
