I found a blog post about Bhool bhulaiya and its Southern counterparts. Good read and watch. Vidya was good in the Hindi one but not as much as Shobhana and Soundarya.

With Bhool Bhulaiyaa under my belt, I tracked back to see its real source and to compare the climax scenes in the 3 other movies on which is was based

1. 1993, Malayalam = Manichitrathazhu

2. 2004, Kannada = Aaptamitra

3. 2005, Tamil = Chandramukhi starring Rajnikanth

4. 2007, Hindi = Bhool Bhulaiyaa

Stars in the films:

Manichitrathazhu

(MALAYALAM)

AAPTAMITRA(KANNADA)

CHANDRAMUKHI(TAMIL/TELUGU)

BHOOL BHULAIYA(HINDI)

MohanlalVishnuvardhanRajnikanthAkshay Kumar
Suresh GopiRamesh AravindPrabhu GanesanShiney Ahuja
ShobanaSoundaryaJyothika SaravananVidya Balan
Vinaya PrasadPremaNayantaraAmisha Patel

In the Malayalam original, Shobhana enacted the role and it was a National Award winning performance for the Best Actress. In the Kannada version (Apthamitra), Soundarya one of the top South Indian actresses, played the key role, unfortunately, her last film before her fatal accident. In the Tamil version (Chandramukhi), Jyothika donned the role and was awarded best actress award by Tamil nadu Government. (wikipedia)

I like the Malayalam version for Shobhana's dancing. I like the tragic dramatic aspect that the actress in Aaptamitradied, so this was her last role. And I like the crazy head rolling end of Chandramukhi. I like the production values of the Bhool Bhulaiyaa version. Which do you like the best?

Watch these 4 and compare, and enjoy:

1. Manichitrathazhu (Malayalam):

2. Aaptamitra (Kannada):

3. Chandramukhi (Tamil):

4. Bhool Bhulaiyaa:

Hmm. I don't watch South films so can't say, but you definitely chose the wrong example here. I have seen the South version of Bhool Bhulaiya and it looked more like a comedy film tbh. Lol. That last scene where the guy has to die, the actress sucked dude! Especially compared to Vidya Balan.

There are 3 versions in South and atleast name(language) the one you have seen. I can say for sure Malayalam and Kannada are better than Hindi. If you are talking about the Tamil one with Rajnikanth, most of his movies are like that and thats why they work. I dont really get why his movies are a rage but they are. I think they made the Hindi one a bit comedic and not that serious movie which is good in its own way.

As for using Bhool bhulaya as an example, cos thats the only one I could think of which has been made in many languages.

When audience accept films that are ORGINIAL then only will BW start making films that areoriginal
People still entertain remakes and make it part of 100 crore film... Why wouldn't producers resort to that!! ComeOn at end of day it's all about profit and money and, each every human being wants to earn bread- butter for their family! They wouldn't certainly make films that audience aren't accepting of and hence tons of remakes are made everyday in BW!

You need to speak to the Head of Remakes for this one and that would Salman Khan.
Seriously I'm sick and tired of the remakes because if they were good I wouldn't care but seriously some are so crap and are practically the same story.

Another problem is our audience loves this nonsense and therefore they keep making films like that. New ideas are not appreciated enough.

My roots are South Indian, I grew up watching Tamil and Telugu movies. I believe most films do not translate well in bollywood. Perhaps it's a different asthetic. One film I remember that was excellent in Tamil called Thevar Magan with Kamal and Sivaji was terrible in Hindi with Anil Kapoor called Virasat.

What I like about the south industry is that there is more focus on acting vs looks. I can name actor after actor who would have never made it in BW, but are superstars in the south and can act very well. Star kids are more likely to enter the industry prepared. Films also tend to tackle social issues and most of them have excellent scripts. Those films are never made, it is the masala ones that perhaps have a different audience aesthetic that are made with a BW spin that takes away anything good left .
