The controversy surrounding Sanjay Dutt has left his fans devastated. Even worse was the fact that this controversy has taken place at a time when Sanjay Dutt had a career-rennaisance courtesy 100 crore hits like AGNEEPATH and SON OF SARDAAR.
In 1993 when Dutt's controversy first started, was also the same year when one of his career-defining films released: KHALNAYAK. Now, 20 years later, when Dutt is in trouble, he has film POLICEGIRI releasing. This interesting comparison is what has aroused some curiosity around POLICEGIRI!
Masala films have worked huge over the last few years. WANTED, GHAJINI, DABANNG, BODYGUARD, SINGHAM, and ROWDY RATHORE are some examples. However, in the year 2013, which romantic films starting to get back into the fray, it seems as if masala is about to be sidelined.
Look at HIMMATWALA for example. The film was supposed to be a Blockbuster, but shockingly, failed at the box office!
My point is, the public has become tired of masala films, especially the audience in the big cities and those who go to multiplexes.
POLICEGIRI may find appreciation in the smaller circuits like Bihar, UP, CP, CI, etc, but it will be completely rejected in the metros and all big circuits! Also, the outdated look and feel of POLICEGIRI doesn't help!
Opening of the film will be decent at single screens in mass centers due to the presence of Sanjay Dutt and the action/masala genre. However, at multiplexes, especially those in the big citites, POLICEGIRI will be a disaster from the word "go"!
My Box Office Predictions for POLICEGIRI:
Opening Day: 3 crores net
Opening Weekend: 9 crores net
Lifetime Collections: 13 crores net
Overall Box Office Verdict: Flop
